I was thinking of buying one of those $600-$700 laptops I’ve been seeing on sale at Best Buy (Toshiba’s, usually). Will they play half life 2, bioshock, etc. games at a decent frame rate?
They will, but I"m not sure of Toshiba’s quality of manufacturing.
yeah, well, gotta go with what I can afford. My gateway laptop is almost 4 years old…and it’s preeety painful.
toshiba sux, 'nuff sasid
Grab one of these. You’d be better off.

Well, we would have to know the specs of these laptops you are talking about. Can you post a link to one? The last $600 laptop I got from Toshiba sucked, and as for games, it could only really do GoldSrc games and lower. I wasn’t particularly a fan of that laptop in general though.
I wouldn’t suggest using a laptop as a primary gaming computer though. The ones that do games well are up in the $1000’s price range, and even the you can’t change most of the hardware like you can with a desktop. My suggestion would be to order parts and build your own desktop. Mine ran me about $800 (including operating system and monitor), which was well worth the price. If you already have a monitor you can use, then that’s a big chunk of money you are saving from the cost of building your own.
Unless you plan to spend $1,000+ on a laptop, don’t expect it to play a lot of games solidly.
Although this one I bought for 600 plays CoH, which makes me happy.
Thanks guys…I’ll let you know which one I buy (which depends on whats on sale at BB)
Asus laptops? No fuckin’ way. They’re a massive pain in the pooper to configure. IMO the best laptop there is are Lenovos. Sure they’re ugly, but they’re much cheaper, more reliable and they never die.
Toshiba is not bad, it ranks higher than Acer and HP in my book.
I’ve seen 4 acer laptops break beyond repair within 1 year, and most people already know about the overheating issues with HP laptops, the only reason I don’t have my Toshiba laptop anymore is because it got stolen.
…
I’ve seen a full size MSI laptop and it was pretty awesome too, high clock graphics card and processor and no cooling problems.
I’ve heard about people’s issues with Acer, but I have one and it’s been great so far. I carry it around everywhere, mash it in my bag, still works fine. Ran every game I threw at it, short of ARMA II. Played CS, Dragon Age: Origins and CoD4 just fine.
It’s an Aspire 6930G, got it on newegg for about $700
Core 2 duo p8600 (2.4Ghz)
4gigs of ddr2 ram
9600M GS nvidia graphics card
16’’ screen…
Yours is way too recent, maybe in a few months you’ll start seeing the problems.
My HP pavilion is a year and a half older than your Acer (1.88Ghz Core 2 Duo + 8400M GT) and it still works fine apart from battery life.
Well…here it is dudes…
I BOUGHT AN ASUS LAPTOP W/ 1 GB NVIDIA GTX 260M VIDEO CARD. Model: G60VX-RBBX05…It plays codmw2 like a dream…god that “no russian” level was disturbing…but I digress.
teh bad news… It cost $899
Thanks for all your advice guys and happy fragging!
So you felt the need to necro a thread from >2 months ago?
I’m on a Toshiba right now. There not bad. Not good for games, but for everything else they’re fine.
Why wouldn’t you just get a tower, for $600 you could get a decent quad core. IDK too much about laptops but I know they (usually) skimp you on the graphics cards for “mobile editions”.
If you’re willing to spend six hours killing Toshiba’s bloatware, maybe. If there’s anything left of it.
Good point, next time I’ll open up a new thread.:fffuuu:
