Good thing they cancelled it. It was not gonna follow the main story arc anyway, so I see no point of it being made.

For me the strongest aspect of the Half Life continuum is the story.

Originally Valve planned an Episode Four, but it was cancelled not long after. Personally I am starting to doubt that Episode Three is ever going to happen, maybe Valve will simply make a Half-Life 3.

Anyway this thread doesn’t really have a point I’d say.

There are two premisses here. First, that this artwork, or article, is a fabrication. And second, that it is in order to create “hype” for Ep3.

Firstly, the artist’s portfolio and list of employers make me think that it’s more likely that this is concept art, published on the artists website, among with loads of other credible artwork.

As for the article, there is ofcourse no way for us to prove it’s not fake. Anymore than there is a way for us to prove that any other article anywhere is fake. It’s good to be sceptic of things you read.
But is there any indication in this artile that this is fake?
I don’t think so. The Half Life series has a history of 3rd party games. Half Life : Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay, were all developed by Gearbox and published by Sierra. It isn’t unlikely that Valve repeated this with EA, later after the success of half life 2.

And besides all this. I don’t think there’s any hype needed. These are the results of the quick searches on Google:

Uncharted 3 : 15 300 000 results
Mass Effect 3 : 50 300 000 results
Half Life 3 : 72 700 000 results

Note that both Uncharted 3 and Mass Effect 3 has both been announced and I’d say both higly anticipated. But maybe it’s not fair to compare these. Half Life 3 / ep3, has been awaited much longer, and has therefor had more time to have been written about.

Duke Nukem Forever : 9 570 000 results

As for the character not looking like a combine soldier. Maybe that’s the art directors fault, working at the 3rd party. Or more likely, just what is expected of a concept artist. A new concept.

If Valve hands over the Half-Life series to ANYONE else, I’m going to throw my computer out of a window, probably go legitimately crazy, and vomit a constant stream of hell. Outsource L4D or TF, even Portal. If / when Half-Life leaves Valve, they have sold out. I will literally shit bricks.

EDIT: And I don’t mean things like Blue Shift and Opposing Force, obviously. I mean anything for the main story.

Real or not, I’m glad it’s canned. That concept art is really bland & the character design of that metrocop/nazi is like a cheap chinese imitation.

I think the game died from being too bland & pointless.

Yeah, episode 3 is probably not happening because they have no fucking idea what to do with the story…
Because they pulled a lost and made so many random but interesting things that they don’t know where to pick up.

I don’t see how they were going to fit all that into a single episode anyways. Lets see, they have to;

  1. Go to the Borealis.
  2. Learn more about Gman.
  3. Stop the combine.
  4. Close all portals from Xen.
  5. Bang Alyx.

Naturally most of that would be roughly expected unless it changed from a Heroic to an epic or tragedy.
… Or a porno.
