Hazard Course Remake

You’re right. There might be people who are so utterly dense that they make retards look like geniuses. They’d certainly need a tutorial in how to press W to move forward and S to move backward.

In fact, it would be great if the devs could actually visit people and show them how to move Gordon’s line of sight by using the mouse.

Maybe a little onscreen pop-up video of a person showing you which directions to push the keys?

Ok my thoughts on the original hazzard course content…

The hologram gina cross can be replaced by the vox system to cut down the workload of an extra npc

It only starts getting interesting once you get to the target range but to have the boring start would work… If you were going to deliver a twist in the turn of events

Just as It starts to get good being on the hazzard course you get to the tram and it’s over.

I really cannot see the point in it unless you take it a step further.

My ideas and how the hazzard course should differ.

No hologram but automated vox anouncement system that plays more or less line for line. Perhaps a projector displaying H&S Saftey images and code of conduct bullshit

Before you get in the HEV suit have a room dedicated to lifting boxes and manual handling…

Keep the hazzard course the same until the target range - include the paintball idea

Live shoot out with BMS security - Live target practice

next area Resonance cascade happens - xen aliens spawn in as the vox tells you you have completed target range practice

as you are asked to escourt a guard to open a door… The guards bite the dust by xen alien attack as they are armed with only paintball guns you on the other hand have a crow bar. The scientist in this area will explain that something has gone terribly wrong if you can keep him alive.

You have to figure a way out of this room (puzzle)

Upon successive tests and making it to the tram the areas are degrading and falling apart while there are also xen aliens spawning in and your only effective weapon is the crow bar.

Explanation of the security turrets room would be a good addition to wiping out a horde of vorts although this helps you get through the there is no way to get back to switch the turret off and becomes the next hazzard

Replace the water training for pooh water (residue processing) and have an ichtosaur in there

While this goes on the vox training voice continues to play as if there is nothing wrong and all is normal when it is quite clear that a disaster is ensuing in the facility

Where scientist might be jeering you on are now zombies

Add a tripmine puzzle room near the tram while it’s talking about fire and steam hazzards… You have to use yourself as bait against HECU to get them to go into there own trip mines… And navigate a a tripmine puzzle after this

Even though the voice exclaims you have completed the hazzard course the tram is not useable and the doors are shut you must face another puzzle with enemies to get it working to escape… In a similar way to portal you need to activate the door and get on the tram and out before it closes… Time critical puzzle

That would be awesome!

Perhaps it would be better to just let the computer control all character movement. That way we can avoid any problems with crouch jumping going wrong.

Would you mind to upload the .vmf?
I got for some reason a lot of problems with my version of the HEV room.
You can also say no, and just move on alone :stuck_out_tongue:

Just watch you tube “let’s play black mesa” or let’s not play black mesa is probably more acurate when watching these videos

Gordon Freeman causes the Resonance Cascade while he is in at the Hazard Course…
YEAH MAKES ALOT OF SENSE RIGHT?
Your idea’s are chaning the original Hazard Course a lot, and does not really makes sense in some ways and we probably would have more work to do.

The difference is you are not playing as Gordon Freeman… Although nobody tells you this it will be an assumption just like the one you have just made… You are some other random guy / girl on Hev Suit training… I never said you were playing as Gordon Freeman did I.

Why would Gordon need to do HEV suit training when thats what he does every day?

plenty of others wear HEV suits… And they all would need training… Think of this person as a new recruit

The rug just got pulled from under your feet…

Not much more a few extra rooms… You certainly would not have to create new NPC’s only audio samples and a few triggers. And a bit more creative say with the layouts like the tram puzzle and such… It’s not that hard to do.

And in this respect it’s alot less work because all the assets you need are there where as to recreate the hazzard course will mean loads of face posing… and stuff… This is alot less involved

The main narration would be VOX albeit an ignorant vox to what is going on

The thought of creating a holographic npc with face poser and everything is probaly alot more work then telling a different story in the same setting but cheating your way around it in a fun way

Half -life and black mesa was always about stuff going wrong embrace that and give yourself some artistic licence… Have the holograph spark like it’s not working if you choose to include it… You get the idea

I agree that it could be just a random new recruit.
The paintball thing could be an idea, but I’m not sure if anyone is eager to make new A.I. for guards and paintball models.Though, if we would put all the other idea’s you had into the Hazard Course it would basicilly not be a recreation of it but more like a custom story for Black Mesa.

Every scientist using an HEV-Suit has to be trained and introduced at the beginning, so does Gordon Freeman. Like someone already said before the hazard course probably takes place a few months or even a year before the events of Half-Life/Black Mesa. And making the player play another scientist than Gordon Freeman isn’t that good in my opinion because hazard course isn’t just training for the player to get familiar with the suit, but also with the character itself. You’re training as Gordon Freeman so you’re prepared to play Half-Life/Black Mesa as Gordon Freeman. The hazard course helps you to develop your own Gordon Freeman style, so you can use it later in the game.

To bring up my idea for the end of the hazard course: Since it is supposed to bring the basic functions of the suit and situation to the player, I’d change the tram ride at the end to an allround summing up obstacle course including all basic lessons you’ve learned on your way through the course. That’d be generaly moving with the HEV-Suit, jumping, crouching, using the longjump module, climbing ladders, and using a Glock. That way the player can get a feel for how it might go in an emergency case.

So he has to pass by dangerous places like radiation hazards, fire, liquid etc. I’d make it very basic so it looks like the course is supposed to prepare for every possible scenario.

And using a MP5 doesn’t belong to that one, I think, so I’d also rather replace that part with a Glock training on an interesting shooting range. The MP5 is introduced by the HECU and I think an invasion of the military doesn’t belong to possible scenarios, at least no one would think of that at the facility. The Glock is a standard equipment at the BMRF, so this could be trained, though.

For the hologram: I’m also with the idea of replacing it with a voice system, maybe CatzEyes’ voice recordings could turn out very practical for this. I always wondered why they’d place a very expensive holgram at every checkpoint just to tell you how things work and maybe just show one or two excersises.

You’d also have to make a special hologram generator for the longjump part that goes all the way she jumps if you’d want to make her show it as she did in the original, because in Half-Life she could move outside her perimeters. That doesn’t make any sense for me.

all you have to do is change the config for hazzard course as it opens outside of the campaign anyway as stand alone. so you deal a very small amount of damage and neither do security guards with the MP5… Just give the HECU marines magnums and shotguns everything else would be uneffected

As for paintball perhaps you can take some inspiration of how they did this in Smod and as the MP5 will do hardly any damage atall apart from splats. this will also go into the config and be tied to a decal texture

But the paint splats could be used to disable say a camera on a turret… Get creative in the use of the paintball gun I think it’s a good idea.

The very small amount of damage can still be used to activate your triggers or not but the paintball rounds could make for a viable option if done in a clever way…

Something I did not mention… My suggestion is based on a bonus mission becoming available after you complete the game because a training course is not really neccesary or atleast I don’t think so.

@powerdust The Hazzard course is obsolete unless you go in a new direction but to make it fun and different would make it for the better. But for purists this may be hard to swallow I can understand… But it’s not really part of the game as such that’s the important part to note.

That pretty much is the opposite of what we’re going for. Regardless, your idea has features we can’t implement. It would also require lots of planning. I urge you to get started on it as your own project, if you can though. It’s not that I dislike the idea, it’s just not what this project is going after.

Yeah, no problem. It’s a bit sloppy, though. As I said before, I haven’t used round brushes much. I also haven’t created any visgroups (no idea why).

Wait, wait, I just remembered that the pipes aren’t Black Mesa models, they’re from (I think) Wilson Chronicles. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if I uploaded them, they’re only placeholder anyway.

What Crypt said in his last post.

Here’s the required files for the pipe models. Just exctract to your BMS folder, usual business. Or you can simply delete the models in the editor if you wish, instead.

Thank you.
Mind if I merge this with my current progess?

I’ll contact Michael Tannock if he can model a full HEV container, though I have no idea if he still wants to do anything related to Black Mesa since he got kicked out of it on the day of release.
I really hope I’m allowed to talk about that though :zip:

RE: Paintball with BMS Security live target practice

It’s an entity AI relationship you just name the guards and tell them to attack the player… It’s really easy to do.

So far as triggers the small amount of damage caused will trigger them to become friendly… If your player gets hurt… you need to go back to a start point and start the exercise again which would start the paintball match again.

You just would have to set the trigger that on guard hurt become friendly

Also a trigger for on player hurt means you lost and need to start again and takes your ammo away or somthing

The trigger to start the execrcise would make them all hostile restores their health and gives you your ammo back

With another trigger that once they all become friendly (you hit them first) one will open the door for you

It’s more complex than that. Sure it’s easy to get the guards to shoot at the player, but then there’s the marker model, and the code for it, and the splat decals, and the yada yada. It’s lots of work, a lot of which we can’t even do, and is just not gonna happen.

Go right ahead. Just bear in mind (as with the rest of the progress) it’s largely unfinished and may continue to make changes.

I dunno, it’s worth a shot, I guess. I might know someone who could try if he declines, though I make no promises.

No offence, but I suggest you to make your own Hazard Course project.
Not that all of your ideas are bad, but some of them just takes the original idea of this project away.

The Start point only needs to be a tools trigger say behind a door… Each time you come in the room it would start the match again.

Anyway good luck with it… I hope you manage to get it done and re-create the hazzard course as you intend to do so.

I thought the paintball was your idea oh well only trying to help you out nevermind

Okie dokie, so now that that’s out of the way what’s to be worked on next? I’m sure there’s something we can mix up to make s’more sense.
