Hazard Course Remake

Maybe also have a guard take the gun away after the range is completed.

I really like the 1st concept image, esspecially the hev container idea.I think alot of props from the Blast Pit could be used for the HEV room,

It would be great to see what you come up with…

I had an idea earlier on today that each part before loading would end and take you to the next mission… so say that there are 6 levels… This means you get an overall time with checkpoints… I can see the sake in doing this for nostalhias sake but it would be good if you could make it an actual race…

I saw those videos of people speedrunning the trip mine puzzle and was gobsmacked… That is what you should be aiming towards after you get the nostalgia out of the way…

Forget about holograms and training make this the real competition… Artisitic license and less work… That way the hazzard course can get longer and longer and add more puzzles traps etc

You could literally make it similar to portal but in a different vein being more dexterity and reaction based not to mention you are racing on a clock perhaps even an atomic one. wink

Someone already came up with that.
Though I’d like to see how the Black Mesa community would react to a PS2 recreation of the Hazard Course.Your idea is not bad though, but could be great IMO for a Co-Op race.

I think I’ll post some new screenshots soon.If anyone feels like to help, I’d like to upload the .vmf’s.

Not sure what I’d be able to do but I wouldn’t mind taking a look.

Worked a little bit more on it. The pipe models (unfortunately) aren’t from Black Mesa, they were in my folder so I used them as placeholder. Also their placement is obviously… questionable, but eh, it’s a draft, man! Here’s a couple more images with very basic lighting.

And the obligatory screenie from inside hammer.

The trigger at the bottom is simply a trigger_hurt to kill the player of high fall damage because there’s a few units of water underneath it Hard to see it ingame, though, gotta switch textures. I tried getting rid of the player clips further away from the catwalk but you can still reach the other rings, so that’s a no-go.

It’s too bad that Black Mesa took out the rail-switching mechanic, because I always thought that teaching the player that mechanic would be a better end to the Hazard Course than getting on a rail to nowhere. In any case, the rail at the end should lead towards a room full of BM employees ready to congratulate you.

Additional Ideas:
One or more rooms with little roomba-esque robots, modified to seek out the player and minimally electrocute and damage them, to train the player for basic headcrab-ish combat in a situation where it matters. (I think these things would fit well with a shotgun.)
A paintball gun, and a paintball fight with some security guards assigned to Hazard Course duty, to train the player for combat with human or human-like opponents.
A narrative mode where something’s happening involving the scientists in the observation windows that introduces you to the starting points of the game’s story (maybe they’re getting distracted by preparations for the big, upcoming test that you’re training for, or maybe something lower-key and less connected to the main game’s events, like they’re really unsubtly hinting at a surprise birthday party for Gordon at the end of the hazard course, or something silly like that).
A competitive mode that automatically records how well you do on everything, displays it on monitors throughout the course, has the overseer scientists comment on it, and records it on a localized high score board. (It makes sense in the story, as the hazard course is apparently the subject of a decathalon.)

I’ve actually been working on the hazard course a bit since black mesa was released.
I haven’t had much time to work on it because of school but I have the first 2 rooms pretty much done brush wise and the rest of the course planned out.
I do plan on finishing the course and possibly even adding a hazard course race you can participate in ( as the hazard course decathlon)
I recently cleaned out my steam screenshots so I don’t have a lot to show. :frowning:
Very very heavy WIP

1: Sounds kind of interesting, only it’d require either a really complex system of entities in Hammer (and that wouldn’t even yield too great results), or a whole new NPC to be coded. This seems like it wouldn’t be of much use, anyway, and would probably be boring. As well, why would Black Mesa spend money to create expensive robots that’ll be blown away?
2: New weapon needs to be coded, lots of AI work and this seems kind of out of place, anyway. Maybe a more interest firing range instead.
3:What? I don’t understand this idea nor it’s relevance.
4: The Hazard Course wouldn’t be a suitable place to hold a decathlon, plus I don’t see a way we could possibly get this whole score system working.

They’re all neat ideas but seem too out of place/unfeasible.

I agree that there should be some form of personal congratulation rather than just a prerecorded message. Perhaps they present some form of plaque or certificate showing the player is not certified for use of the HEV suit?

An interesting idea, but it doesn’t make much sense for standardized training. Neither does using the shotgun.

This would be really cool, perhaps add some kind of obstacle course to aid in training users to sneak, kind of like a more advanced version of the crouching training room. Unfortunately, We don’t have access to the Source code, so we can’t code in paintball guns. The explicit training for tactical combat is a bit iffy.

These would be cool, but a bit hard to do as an addon to BM, unless we want to add three new menu options. We couldn’t have the scientists be talking about the test, because judging by dialogue from HL2 and the episodes, Gordon was at BM for months, probably closer to a year, year and a half.

Is there any particular area of the Hazard Course you want me to work on if I’m going to contribute to this? I think I can get started tomorrow night.

So far it looks like a few people are just spitballin’, no real plan or anything, so I guess it’s pretty much “open season,” if you will, for now. Maybe shortly we’ll be able to get it all nice, organized and “official,” as far as that term can go here.

Uh, replay the first chapter of Half-Life 1 or Black Mesa, and listen up this time. :stuck_out_tongue:

Other than that, I get all the objections.

Oh, didn’t recall it specifically mentioning the Hazard Course. My bad, then.
The ideas are nice, though, maybe we can find something to pull from them and use. The paintball bit specifically made me think about making the firing range not suck.

Edit:

Here’s an update of two images if anyone cares to take a look. The cables look a bit messy, aren’t perfectly alined with the connectors and it’s a tad dark.

I’m only chipping in here… I think having a bunch of people waiting for you at the end of the hazzard course would be not particularly exciting perhaps humourous but not really any weight to it.

If you want to go the route of a faithfull reconstruction that is up to you collectivly.

If anything it would be better to think outside the box. But you don’t have to tell the player anything.

If you start the hazzard course like normal fine I think that is a good idea. The paintball idea is good also. But how about this.

The resonance cascade happens while you are on HEV suit training… Armed with your paintball gun and a crowbar headcrabs start spawning in… The Hazzard course tests become way more hazzardous because shit has just hit the fan.

In a training scenario where a real disaster is occurring inside the training sector

“oh I’m not gordon freeman”… It does not hurt to pull the rug from peoples feet either

VOX should also be the tutor - but dumb as hell

WTF! yeah I give you this

To add further irony to it you’ll come out in lambda core and go to the same room before the teleport chamber but perhaps things can play out differently here than being teleported… In this scenario you have to run away

lol u funy

Seriously, though, what? I’ll just go under the assumption that you’re joking (but I’ve seen some of the suggestions on this forum, so who the hell knows).

I was gonna post another screenshot of the progress, but Black Mesa had it’s first random crash and I’m too lazy to open it up again, so I’ll do that later.

It’s no joke

Yes I am serious… The resonance cascade happens while you are in training on the hazzard course… Bad day just got worse

Sounds like it could be the start of some unrelated mod, I guess. Assuming everyone wants to recreate the Hazard Course and not add an additional er… component that’s out of place to Black Mesa it doesn’t sound quite like it suits this particular project.

I never understood why the Hazard Course was situated in such a dank and dingy location.
Wouldn’t a clean and sterile Portal’esque environment be more suitable and in line with the Black Mesa Facility aesthetic?

derp! It pays to read previous posts more thoroughly! Thanks Crypt19!

Here’s from a page back, explains very nicely.

Teeny update:

Look at them awkward shadows and sexy power cables.

Sorry for the constant updates and posts, but I have absolutely nothing to do. Like… ever.
Any modelers wanna give the suit’s container a shot?

Well good luck with it… If your not going to take it in any new direction at all then just for nostalgias sake then there really is not much point in my opinion as it’s redundant now…

The resonance cascade is out of place in black mesa?

I suppose it is…never thought about it like that before

The Hazzard course would make a better bonus mission than a training mission I gave you a simple plot idea to run with… Take it or leave it…when you eventually realise that giving the hazzard course a twist of fate will make it a lot more interesting then you will have something more substantial, tangible and worthwhile.

As it is that right now to be given a certificate and have scientists congratulate you is not the stuff of greatness…and although humourous… Not nearly as humourous as a training day where the actual training excercise is surplanted by an actual disaster of epic proportions…There are certainly more achievement in getting out alive than given a piece of paper and a pat on the back.

I think more people would like a recreation of the training mission than a bonus map that doesn’t tie into anything else.
And nothing’s set in stone yet, it seems, just ideas floating around. Yours just requires changing from being the Hazard Course to being a whole new thing that doesn’t tie in with anything else Black Mesa related, and probably lots of extra unnecessary work. I’m not trying to say the idea itself is bad or anything, just that it doesn’t suit this particular project.
The only “goal” that’s been (at least seemingly so) agreed upon is to recreate the Hazard Course.
The resonance cascade isn’t out of place for Black Mesa, but being in the middle of a training session with a paintball gun in a clearly old part of the facility and exiting to the new shiny parts is. You don’t need to be so hostile.

sorry don’t think of me as hostile… I am not…

I just put it down how I see it…or ideas I come up with…Forget about the exit to the shiny new parts I tagged that on for irony

What you have said about the “goal” to only recreate the hazzard course is fine… and will be a lot more work than my version of events… I am actually trying to make it easier for you… i.e. no NPC holgram gina moss… Have it as the actual race / drill but after a while during the events of the resonance cascade in this other part of the facility…Because you no longer need to create the Hazzard course for training purposes

Tram ride to freedom… Run away… Get out alive… Have fun with it… It’s only the hazzard course…

I am going to have a quick playthrough now and see it again compared to BMS
