Hazard Course Remake

So I stated this in the old thread before the forums got reset, but I can help with concept work. I already worked on some for the old project, but can start over if need be.

That would be great  .

Can I volunteer?

I think I can juggle my time between Mr. (Mrs.?) Gonarch and this thing. I’ve always wanted a challenge, not to mention a chance for real mapping work.

Sure  .
I’ll be sending you the .vmf once I’ve fixed some brushes.

Honestly I think a cargo elevator would be good since it would make more sense because that sector used to be a storage and I don’t think they would use a office elevator to move cargo lol.

I would love to do some more mapping on the hazard course, if you get the chance to send me the file, I’ll happily get to work on it

Well, I doubt you’d have to start over, but we could definitely use the concept help

Of course. Until we organize a bit better it’s pretty much been a matter of picking an area you want to work on then seeing what you come up with.

That slipped my mind, too. But the area directly preceding it has a large gap and a ladder. Not very suitable for storage transport.

Touche’. I was thinking of how we’ve been doing it. Work on an area, if it’s liked then someone merges.

Edit: Oops, accidental double-post.

I think when the holo emitter gets scaled down it’ll need some minor tweaks/reskins. The emitter in OAR has a screen with a small map of new mexico on it, so that’ll have to be edited or removed, I think.

Right now I’m using an enclosed elevator with the specific size and texture specifications based off of the first map of WGH, but that can be changed later. Right now it doesn’t actually move, but does a shake/sound sequence like all the in-elevator level changes in HL and BM. (It’s currently set up to work best as a separate map from the previous section like it was in the original.) Screenshots will come once I have enough progress to actually show off.

Hey guys, I was away for the weekend but it looks like things have been happening here, which is great to see! Just clarifying, will this remake of the HC start in the elevator like the original HL, or on the tram like the PS2 version? For those that haven’t seen the PS2 version watch this video:

There was some discussion on the old forums about where it should start, and one of our members Catalyst started mapping these parts:

I could try contacting Catalyst and see if he still has the map files for that part if you guys want to go with the PS2 version of the course.

Personally, I prefer the PS2 intro to the course, it makes more sense than just starting in a random elevator. But what do you guys think?

I definitely prefer that version. Is it possible though to get voice/choreo work for the scientist at the beginning?

https://combineoverwiki.net/wiki/Training_Facility#Training_Facility

You should be able to find what you need there as well as a lot of information and “loose cannon”

Yeah, I definitely prefer the PS2 versions intro, and the map looks pretty nice. Maybe the mission could start with the player on the tram in the seconds just before it arrives at the lobby? A nice (but optional, of course) detail to that would be a new voice from CatzEyes, “Now arriving at Sector A Training Facility,” or something along that.

If Catalyst still has the files then that would be especially nice, and considering the HL2 props can now be replaced with their Black Mesa counterparts it’d look a bit nicer, too.

@BoxNoob, how much of the brushwork have you redone? If you haven’t done much I can pull open the .vmf you sent me before and get to work on that.

Regarding the voices I’m sure if we ask politely we could probably get the voice actors for black mesa to do a few extra lines

I was working on that part 2 weeks ago but unfortunatly my black mesa files.
I hope we can contact catalyst, it would be nice to merge this in the progess we currenty g
got.though i got a feeling i need to put a loading point somewhere.though anyone wants thay i keep the current first room or remove it and recreate catalyst his version?
@crypt i still need to fix alot.ill be sending you the vmf file later today.

As someone who has no mapping or Modding experience, with mainly a viewpoint of someone looking in from the outside, I’d like to see simply a remake of the Hazard Course. I could care less about any extra bells and whistles, I only really want to see the core experience that doesn’t stray too far from the original. Extra details are awesome, as the original design allows for some creative license, but is there really a need to add scripted events that didn’t take place during a standard training session?

Sure, a tutorial is no longer necessary, but simply seeing the map with new details, is.

However, I would like to see the PS2 intro added. It does indeed provide a bit of context to the scenario, especially if this is more a standalone experience.

Pretty much what we’re aiming for.

What about them?

There will definitely be at least two map changes.
I like your version, but on the other hand Catalyst’s deviates from the original less. I’d wait and see if he even still has the files before we decide.

Hm, I’ll send you something right now and we’ll compare when I get yours, then.

just out of curiosity what jump height are you basing the hazzard course on because if it’s the default jump height of 160 in BM you’ll have to make everything alot lower than in the original…

From playing with the config jump height vertical speed 190 seems more realistic and feels better.

so thought I would bring this up and raise awareness before you get much further…

Jump heiight at 160 could also make the hazzard course look stupid

I think it’s a conversation you need to have with the devs if they plan on altering jump height or not

There’s nothing wrong with the default jump height, it should be fine.

I would think the obstacles would be adjusted for the same jump height in BM, it will mean players will have to crouch jump quite a lot. But that’s a good thing, since it will only help those who aren’t familiar with crouch jumping get used to it before they play BM, if the HC remake gets added to BM.
