"Happy Holidays"...PC or not?

Just say whatever the hell you like. As long as the sentiment is positive I don’t see what all the fuss is about. People don’t have the right not to be offended.

Stop acting like you’re the ultimate authority on anything, Fancy Pants. :hmph:

Also, STFU and GTFO.

Next up (as I really would like to talk about in this thread) is the very concept of political correctness. If people are upset over politically-correct speech (you know that many people are), does it make politically-correct speech politically-incorrect? How does “political correctness” itself work, as a concept?

i never said i was the “ultimate authority” on anything, i’m telling people how their ignorance and stupidity can affect others.
and nope. don’t think i will now, just to bother you.

neither did garth :hmph:

No, but neither has anyone else you’ve claimed is acting like the “ultimate authority”. Everyone else, as far as I can see, is making pretty level headed arguments. You’re the one being a bit of a jerk about the whole thing with plenty of cussing and naming calling. If anyone is trying act like the “ultimate authority”, I have to agree that it’s pretty much you.

Anyway, for Political Correctness to be Politically Incorrect it would have to offend, and while people think Political Correctness is dumb/unnecessary/over-the-top/etc., I don’t know if anyone actually finds it “offensive”. So while I wouldn’t say Political Correctness is Politically Incorrect, it very well could be.

Looking up definitions, it appears the idea of Political Correctness is essentially a catch-all phrase that is meant to find ways of wording things without offending. I.E., “African-American” as opposed to a few other choice words that are considered highly offensive.

something that i find pretty hilarious is that african american isn’t used as often because it implies that you’re actually from africa, “people of color” is preferred.

and garth acts like he is. about everything. and it’s annoying.

and i find it p. funny that anyone feels the need to point out that im being a jerk. gee, thanks! i had no idea, let me entirely change my ways.

You can’t say tl;dr to something that isn’t actually that long and then go on to argue with the person whose post you haven’t even read. maybe you think I think I’m the absolute authority because you never bother to read my explanations. Now being a person who is very considerate towards minorities, I’ll re-post the most important part for the ADD readers out there.

“Now mind you I’m only talking about minor and inadvertently offensive things, if someone walks around calling a black person a n*gger the person has every right to complain. Respecting other people’s beliefs is important, but you need to find a sane balance between tip toeing on eggshells and running around insulting people like an asshole.”

And though I may be privileged in many ways, I am still a part of many minorities, I know what it is like to be the minority, so I CAN relate.

And I never claimed I was the ultimate authority. If you disagree with what I say, it might help to first actually READ it, and then make a counter argument other than childish insults.

I’ve actually had people tell me that they were offended that I didn’t use the phrase “Merry Christmas” when greeting people around this time of year, so now I use “Happy Holidays” as a double-edged sword of sorts. For those that aren’t offended, it’s a nice way of greeting people. For those that are, however, well, I want them to be offended anyway.

and those people are idiots. like i said, christmas is a holiday too, and merry christmas is included within happy holidays.

@garth everything about you makes you come off as a pretentious fuck. every post of yours i’ve seen makes you look like a PRETENTIOUS FUCK. i’m pretty sure it’s safe to assume that the ones i haven’t read are the same way. i can skim the post and get the general idea of “blah blah im a pretentious privileged fuck shit on everyone else everything should go my way I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THESE PEOPLE ARE OFFENDED I MEAN IM NOT IN THEIR POSITION AT ALL AND NEVER HAVE BEEN AND NEVER WILL BE BUT I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY’RE OFFENDED THEREFORE THEY SHOULDNT BE”

Nothing is more pretentious than melodramatically crying about the inferiority of other people and wantonly accusing others of ignorance.

And please actually read what I type before whining about it.

Since, you know, this is a debate subforum and you’re you know, debating, you might want to actually read the other person’s posts instead of just arguing about what you assume they said.

it’s just a rehashing of everyone else’s shitty arguments based on how WELL IIIIIIIIIII WOULDN’T BE OFFENDED, WHY WOULD THEY? or irrelevant examples that mean absolutely nothing. i’m not going to get that two minutes spent reading that bullshit of my life back, either.

Fancy, your argument isn’t based on any more substantial evidence than anybody else’s. It’s a matter of opinion, and how people react to these wishes is different from person to person. Saying that all minorities should and have the right to be offended is just as dangerous as saying all the minorities shouldn’t and don’t.

i didn’t say they SHOULD be offended. the fact is that some people ARE, and if you can change one phrase in your vocabulary to avoid offending them and including even more people at the same time, why in the hell shouldn’t you?

and saying someone has rights is just as bad as saying someone doesn’t have rights.
oh.

But the people who are offended by something so trivial are an EXTREME minority and, in my opinion, don’t have the right to take away the rights of others simply because they’re a little annoyed.

I reference back to my original “Christmas Store” example, which I still stand was completely unfair and that the family that demanded the store be removed entirely, even after the compromise, were in the wrong.

Also, it’s Freedom of Religion, not Freedom from Religion.

they are absolutely not an extreme minority. people who do not celebrate christmas are not an extreme minority. why shouldn’t they be wished a happy holiday as well? why should you exclude them from your greeting when it’s seriously no effort at all to change it?

if they were in the wrong, so was the school. they could not have possibly not realized how it was in bad taste to name something in a public, government funded establishment after a religious tradition.

I’ve never had any non-Christians be offended by “Merry Christmas.”

Remember, Dino, the public school is run by the government and shouldn’t really be getting involved in religious stuff anyway. If they do, they do it because no one complains.

However–
There’s nothing saying that private people can’t hold any Christmas thing they want.

The people that complain the most about Christmas are, in my experience, Jehovah’s Witnesses and, to a lesser-extent, Jewish people. I’m talking about individual people, not the religion at large, by the way. I haven’t met a single atheist that has had a problem with Christmas celebrations but point out that the Constitution says that government and religion should be separate and, just because it was mixed in the past doesn’t mean that it should in the future.

Remember, this isn’t kids in school doing Christmas stuff, it’s the government doing Christmas stuff. Try to imagine the government doing other religion’s stuff, such as, dare I say it, Muslim stuff, and getting kids to get down on their knees and pray to Mecca? Do you think there would be no complaints?

Ok, I said people who were OFFENDED were in the extreme minority, not people who don’t celebrate Christmas.

And ok, while maybe I can understand how a public school system which is technically a branch of the government shouldn’t name it after a specific holiday, there is NO REASON it couldn’t be called a “Holiday Store” instead. (Make sure to go back and read the full story if you haven’t in my first post, don’t go off the bits and pieces you’re getting.)

Edit: Daniel, I’m really more upset about the fact that the family wouldn’t’ even keep it as a “Holiday Store”, no longer affiliated with a specific religion, but instead demanded the store be removed in it’s entirety because it USE to be the Christmas store.

someone doesn’t have to protest and raise a huge fuss to be offended. and whether they’re offended or not, it’s still nicer to include as many people as possible. you’ve all got serious issues if you’re arguing against including more people in holiday greetings.

again, there’s literally NO REASON NOT TO. so i’m not seeing the issue at all.
