"Happy Holidays"...PC or not?

I just have a quick question. Is it politically correct or politically incorrect? After all, it appears that more people get upset over the term “Happy Holidays” than “Merry Christmas”.

Should we say “Merry Christmas” so that we don’t offend people? And, if so, at what point is it PC to be politically-incorrect?

I dont understand.

Why should ppl be moody on those words?

Um. K, I won’t ask how that came to mind. I’d think happy holidays would be the better choice, because it applies to everyone in this season, while merry Christmas only applies to those who celebrate it.

oh I see.

So do I; I think Happy holiday’s a better one.

Nonetheless, Christmas is not too bad for non-christ people. Is it true that people would get fuck when we say merry christmas to them? I can like say this because I am not christian.

Some insist that using the phrase “Happy Holidays” is a politically-correct term so that you don’t offend those that don’t celebrate Christmas…and it’s even gone so far in the United States that daring to say “Happy Holidays” is tantamount to declaring “war” on Christmas and a massive anti-“Happy Holidays” smear campaign including suggesting that it is “illegal to say Merry Christmas”.

This is probably a United States-only issue but this goes beyond “Merry Christmas”/“Happy Holidays” to the whole subject of political correctness. It seems that many people (at least in the United States) get offended over “political correctness” to the point where it’s politically correct to be politically incorrect.

Your thoughts?

I’m perfectly fine with “Happy Holidays” in general, it’s when a small group of individuals start complaining about the fact that they don’t celebrate Christmas and demand that anything related to Christmas be taken down.

This was a big deal in my elementary school. We use to have this Christmas Store that you could bring money in and all the students could buy little gifts for their family. Great concept, but alas, one family complained that they didn’t celebrate Christmas and demanded it be stopped. The school offered to change it to the Holiday Store, but the family would not hear of it and this fun little tradition was removed.

Similarly, in Middle School when we had a small pine tree in front of our library, it wasn’t a Christmas Tree because that would have been “offensive”, it was a Holiday Tree.

Fine, you don’t celebrate Christmas, but how exactly is the fact that the large majority who DO celebrate Christmas want to celebrate Christmas offends you?

I have to go with Daniel with the Political Correctness issue in the United States. Those who get shot down for being “Politically Incorrect” tend to get extremely frustrated that what is essentially the minority of people can scream “I’M OFFENDED” and suddenly a simple greeting turns into a hate crime…

hmm?
American is more amaze that I’ve ever thought.
I’ve never heard this issue in east asia.

christians have enough privilege as it is without people assuming everyone celebrates christian holidays.
happy holidays is more appropriate and frankly makes you a hell of a lot less of an asshole.

also dinothrasher you’re ignorant and an idiot, congratulations on being what’s wrong with the world. you can’t say “WELL THE ~MAJORITY~ DOES IT SO INSTEAD OF A GREETING THAT COVERS EVERYONE THEY SHOULD JUST DEAL WITH A RELIGION SPECIFIC ONE”
you have to protect the rights of the minorities as well.

What? If someone walks up to me ans wishes me a happy or merry of any other holiday, I don’t get offended by it. I would simply respond by saying I don’t celebrate that holiday, but thanks for the wishes.

because christmas is what the majority of americans celebrate, so it’s very rare you’d be wished something else. for someone who doesn’t celebrate christmas and gets wished merry christmas ALL THE TIME, it would be irritating.
you can’t try to say “OH WELL I WOULD DO THIS SO THEY SHOULDN’T BE OFFENDED” because that’s not how it works. you’re not them, you’re not in their situation.

and who the FUCK gets offended by happy holidays? has christmas suddenly transcended holiday status and no one told me?

What if someone celebrates NO winter-time holidays? By your logic, saying “happy holidays” makes you an asshole. Wouldn’t it be better to just not say anything?

(p.s. Christians are not the only ones who celebrate Christmas. At least, that’s what I’ve found in my experience)

Edit: ninja’d

that doesn’t change the fact that it’s recognized as a christian holiday, and even non-christians would tell you that.
and it’s better to offend the extreme minority of people who don’t celebrate anything than the much, much, MUCH larger percentage of people who celebrate something other than christmas.

i seriously can’t see any legitimate reason to be offended by happy holidays. christmas is still a fucking holiday. if it offends you and you think everyone should say merry christmas, get your fucking privilege stick out of your ass.

Happy Holidays

oh yeah most of civilized country have to celebrate this special holiday, and yeah, including non-christian.
And for those who did not celebrate this, you are the less part of the rest, so you shouldn’t even complain about this if you don’t want to make such a conflict.

I guess what I’m saying is, how could “Merry Christmas” possibly be interpreted as malicious? Wishing someone a happy time, whether or not they celebrate the holiday, seems like a polite thing to do.

doesn’t happy holidays do the same thing, only while applying to a larger group of people?

So what your saying is the family I gave in my story about the elementary school was no way in the wrong and had every right to demand a “Christmas Store” be removed because they don’t celebrate Christmas, even when the school offered to call it the “Holiday Store”?

Also, do I have the right to get offended if someone says “Happy Hanukkah” to me?

Dude, I clearly said in my first post that in general I have nothing against “Happy Holidays”, it’s the extremists (WHO DO EXIST) that peeve me.

Sure, I agree. But people who get offended by “merry Christmas” are being crazy.

Edit: Err… this was directed at Fancy.

people arent being “extremists” by standing up for their rights.
and they were certainly not in the wrong, it’s in poor taste to name something in a government run public school after a religious holiday.

and no, you don’t have the right to be offended, because by celebrating christmas YOU HAVE PRIVILEGE. that’s like saying “can i be offended if someone calls me cracker?” no, you can’t.

they are not being crazy. imagine a different holiday was the predominant one, one that you don’t celebrate due to your religion. then imagine everyone wishes you happy whatever that holiday constantly is when YOU DON’T CELEBRATE IT. can you see how this would be REALLY irritating to people?

Ooooo, duh, I get it now. So because I’m the majority I don’t have the same rights as the minority? Silly me…

No, that makes no sense. If they have the right to be offended, I have the right to be offended. If they can get offended because I said “Merry Christmas”, then I can get offended if they say “Happy Hanukkah” in the same tone. And I can DEFINITELY get offended if someone says “Cracker” to me in a way that was obviously meant to somehow offend.

And even assuming for a second that naming it after a Christian holiday was in poor taste, the school was perfectly willing to compromise on the matter.

If it in itself is not an offensive statement, and it was not said in a way intended to be offensive, then while they might find it a literal “irritating”, I don’t feel they have the right to freak out about it. It’s not offensive, no matter what you say.

that’s not what i said. i said you don’t have to right to try to suppress their holidays and culture, which would be taking rights away from the minority.

AND NO
YOU
HAVE
PRIVILEGE
YOU CAN NOT BE OFFENDED BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT THE ONE BEING OPPRESSED.

and i honestly cannot argue with somebody who thinks they have the right to be offended if someone calls them cracker. read up on white privilege, actually no, just privilege in general. then quit being an ignorant fuckhead, then get back to me.
