I could see it being irritating to the extent that waiting at a stoplight would be irritating. Which is to say, I’d deal with it. Think about Jehovah’s Witnesses. They don’t celebrate birthday anniversaries, but I’m sure they’re subjected to other people’s celebrations and recognitions about their own birthday just as much as people of other religions.
because stoplights are oppressing your religious practices. sorry, i forgot about them damn stoplights. those two things are ENTIRELY comparable.
It’s not a perfect metaphor because there is nothing else really like this situation. Besides the birthday thing which I mentioned.
That’s a good point. Can I start having Jehovah Witnesses arrested for attempting to force their religion on me? Don’t say “But their Christian like you”, because it’s a totally different branch of Christianity and it’s definitely pretty annoying.
How is it oppressive exactly Fancy Pants? It’s not like I’m forcing them to not celebrate their culture, and frankly if someone were to say any other holiday greeting to me, I’d be perfectly fine with it. I’d either do as I already said to do, or just keep walking and take the blessing.
exactly, there’s nothing like this situation, so you can’t gauge how you would react and then try to say that everybody else should act like you, because obviously if that’s what you would do it’s entirely perfect and a great example and the entire world should follow it.
it’s oppressive because it’s pretty much denying the existence of their holidays. by saying merry christmas as opposed to happy holidays, you are ONLY acknowledging the holiday that YOU celebrate, and that is absolutely unfair to everybody else.
and like i fucking said
you
have
christian
privilege
your
holiday
is
prevalent
how many times will i have to say it before it actually gets through to you?
you cannot say what you would do from your position of privilege and apply it to people in a different position. that’s not how it fucking works.
That’s a completely different argument and not what I was saying at all. :meh:
Oh you guys’re posting quitely quickly, like a chat thread.
And if you notice something like me, I was detecting someone offended a happy birthday threads, those they doesn’t co-celebrate
i might just go play zelda and cry about the ignorance, willful oppression, and privilege-denying in the world. i’m not sure if i can do this anymore.
You should just say whatever the person you’re saying it to is celebrating. Otherwise, your good wishes are pretty empty.
Public (not privately owned) places are a different story though, they should just stay neutral.
In essence I agree with Fancy Pants, but something as innocent as holiday wishes are really not something to get your panties in a twist about.
Question: do you wish people of another religion a happy whatever-holiday-they’re-celebrating?
It’s not uncommon to wish Muslims a good festival of sacrifice (jeez that name sounds stupid in english) around here. We even get delicious food and snacks from our neighbours after Ramadan and after festival of sacrifice :3
^ No argument there.
I’m just speechless that a thread about which of those two phrases was more politically correct turned into Fancy Pants raging at people.
Oh wait, I’m not.
Even though my original religion was orthodox, my family only celebrates new year’s day, not christmas, so I don’t give a shit either way.
Okay, minor stipulation for this thread of mine: Fancy Pants: STFU and GTFO.
Now, back to the topic.
Christmas is religion related? realises there’s “Christ” in the name Oh shi… :FFFUUU:
In Latvian it’s called ‘Ziemassvētki’ which translates as ‘Winter fest/holiday’.
Fuck Christmas, in Denmark we celebrate yule-tide
well actually it’s a bastardized version of yule-tide, combined with the idea of Christmas and stuff, it’s all kinda weird
Ah, but Christmas appears no where in the Bible. In fact, in Jeremiah 10, we see that we shouldn’t even decorate trees:
:fffuuu:
I think this whole argument is entirely fucking retarded and people shouldn’t get upset at 2 words. I could care less which one is used.
Anytime someone wishes me a happy holidays I offer a merry christmas back to them. I am not insulted either way and I would hope others would offer me the same wishes. If I say merry christmas and someone wishes me a happy Hanukkah, I am all good with it.
I say “Happy Holidays” because it’s an easy way of including most everyone. If you celebrate Christmas, “Happy Holidays” applies to you. If you celebrate Hannukka, “Happy Holidays” applies to you. If you celebrate Kwanzaa, “Happy Holidays” applies to you. If you celebrate the Winter Solstice, Saturnalia, Festivus, or the multitude other December holidays, “Happy Holidays” applies to you.
It’s easier than trying to figure out which holiday someone might celebrate.
But my question becomes, however, when it becomes politically correct to be politically incorrect…
Are you trolling very successfully or completely serious??? If you are serious then you are the most arrogant person I have ever met. Do you seriously think what you want and like is more important than what other people want and like simply because you’re the minority??? If anything the Majority’s wishes should count more seeing as there’s more of them that would be upset if their wishes were ignored.
I’m an atheist and I celebrate Christmas. If I didn’t celebrate it I’d still walk around school wishing people Merry Christmas.
Everyone has quite a few minorities they belong to, if everyone complained about the very smallest “slight” to their minority, all of America would be a stuffy drab place with no individuality straight out of George Orwell’s 1984.
Say you’re a very traditional Muslim and all the girls at school are wearing scanty clothes. By your logic all the girls would have to start wearing uniforms so as not to offend anyone. But wait, the uniforms are red and someone at the school is a member of a gang who’s rival members wear all red! Looks like we’ll have to make the uniforms grey and the school colors, gold and red, need to be changed to grey and grey!
uh-oh, it looks like the American flag for the pledge of allegiance has offended some Mexican students. Looks like we’ll have to put up a Mexican flag too. But wait, it looks like there’s some Chinese Japanese Pakistani Indian German Swedish and on and on and on students too, looks like we’ll have to put up a flag for every single one of their countries. But wait, that’s not practical. Looks like we’ll have to take down the flags and any other symbol of nationality.
Oh, an Indian student wants the school cafeteria to serve Indian food, but the school can’t afford to serve both Indian and normal food, so we’ll have to serve all Indian food. But wait, that’ll offend the American German British etc. students! Looks like the cafeteria food will have to be replaced by a tasteless nutritious artificial slop that has no nationality and will offend everyone equaly.
The playground has a baseball field but not a cricket field and some of the British students are complaining that this is racist towards British students. Some African Americans are complaining that the white kids get a baseball field and they don’t get a basketball court (stereotype FTW! ). The only solution is to have NO playground and No field.
Now lets what’s happened to the school. Students have to wear the exact same all grey uniform that turns them into a sea of conformity, all the flags and any other symbol of nationality have been taken down, the tasty American cafeteria food has been replaced with repulsive slime and all the school’s sports fields had to be taken down leaving the kids with nothing to do between classes. Is that what you want?? Because that is what you are asking for. intense sarcasmIsn’t equality just great?intense sarcasm
To summarize this wall of text: Just fucking deal with it!
