Half-Life music in television

I was watching an episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog when I heard a theme eerily similar to that of the one in Gonarch’s Lair. Do people often reuse music from video games?

Btw this episode scared me stiff when I was a kid.

Wow. That’s…wierd. I haven’t heard anything that sounds like Half-Life on TV but now I’m keeping my eye out.

And I too was scared by this episode. Didn’t sleep well for weeks.

It seems like lately, when I watch the Discovery Channel or History Channel, I hear them reusing the music from Red Faction. Also, I hear the airlock door opening noise from Doom all the time on television. And I still think it’s sad that I recognize it.

Mythbusters has used one of the songs from MGS3 a few times before.

I dunno about TV, but I was playing Metal Arms: Glitch in the System a few days ago, and the intro to a song during a boss battle caught my ear.

And actually, on the show “Dexter” I ALWAYS hear door sound effects from the source engine.

In the GI Joe: Rise of Cobra movie, when the alarm goes off in “The Pit”, it is the White Forest Base alarm.

A lot of the music and foley in Half-Life are built around usual candidates from sound libraries, not too shocking

Stock sounds and music. I remember not too long ago someone heard an instrument from the Half Life track Nepal Monastery in another song - we tracked it down for him and it turned out that it was used in the song Snakefood by Safri Duo, and originally came from a CD of stock music called ‘Ali Baba and the 40 Ravers’. This sort of thing happens all the time.

Examples: Check out the beginning of Daft Punk’s Da Funk and the ending of the ending of Gorillaz’s Dare. They both use the same stock crowd/background noise. The car honk at the beginning of Da Funk is also used in an traffic scene from the anime FLCL. The White Forest Base Alarm danielsangeo mentioned is also the tactical nuke alarm from Modern Warfare 2. The standard metal/metal hit sound used in most Source/Valve games was also used in an episode of MLP. And so on and so forth.

My father was once watching a Russian documentary on his laptop. I think it was about aliens or something but I wasn’t really paying attention. Guess what - Inbound was playing in the background. It wasn’t on TV but still…

lol I watched a Russian documentary about nuclear submarines and there have been used several soundtracks and sounds from Half-Life and Half-Life 2, such as “Space Ocean”, “Dark Interval” and “Supression” and soundeffects like the driving sound from the combine APC or the alarm from the “Anomolous Materials” testchamber. Then there was another German documentation about road bikes using the soundtracks “Brane Scan”, “Nuclear Mission Jam” and another one I don’t remember. Also “28 Weeks Later” has one soundtrack using the beginning from “A Red Letter Day”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf1rEhJQSak

Kelly Bailey, as probably many other composers of electronic music, is known to involve other bits of music in his tracks. I think he stated this in an interview on HL but I’m not sure. There was a guy I remember making a video clip on YouTube, trying to start a debate on weather or not Kelly ripped 28 Weeks Later off. Of course, he got his ass kicked. But I really have a faint memory of reading somewhere that the Half-Life 2 one is also taken from something like probably a sound library.

LOST and Adrenaline Horror. It’s pretty damn obvious in hindsight.

Woah, really? I somehow find that marvelous. Do you know what episode?

I’m sure a there are other TV programs, including Buffy and the later series of X-Files that had them in

I think the one most used is labelled Suspense5 in the HL: Source GCF

I hear Doom’s Imp death quite often, and Quake’s teleport.

I think Mass Effect’s fear sting sounds an awful lot like some kind of fear sting from Half-Life.

Indeed I do - episode 18, The Show Stoppers. One of them hits a fan during their performance and it makes that sound.

cool beans

Interestingly enough, the Metal hit sound from Half-Life 2 can be found in Soldier of Fortune 2 by raven software. I came across it looking up videos of that game’s gore, forgot which one though - but i might be able to find it again.

I guess they used some of the same libraries.

Also, more common for me, but I ALWAYS hear the intro to Nuclear mission Jam in a ton of shows, and not just something that sounds like it, but the exact intro, with the exact length, and such (and it makes sense, it sounds like those horror movie buildup tracks). Oddly enough I noticed it the most when I was flipping through channels and I stopped by accident on a Spanish channel.

I don’t speak a word of Spanish, but it was the longest I’d ever kept the channel on without changing it

Yeah the metal hit sound is used in many movies and games like “28 Days Later” and “Metro 2033”. Also the sound of running combine soldiers is used in “Metro 2033” sometimes when heavy bags fall on the ground for example, sounds very cheesy though since it still has this running sound.
