Half-Life 3... oh shit

Personally I would like it to be called HL2:Ep3 because its the closing act of this story arc. Even if it wasn’t an Episode at this point and it was a full fledged game I’d still like it to have the title Episode 3. If they were to call it HL3 I’d feel that it was a different story arc and it would lose something for some reason.

In the end I’d just like them to save the title HL3 for a new story arc and a new upgrade of source.

I sincerely think Half-Life’s story shouldn’t drag out much longer. One more HL2-sized installment should bring it to a well-placed conclusion.

Unless ‘episodic’ take on a more literal meaning than we think, having the saga released in an extensively long series of short episodes. Like an anime.

Because anime is the only thing that comes in short episodes.

I don’t get why people insist on the fact that the next HL will be an episode, when in MULTIPLE interviews valve employees have said that they’ve abandoned the episodic model.

this thread kinda sucks

Half Life, for the most part, took place in an American lab with alien creatures invading and messing everything up. Half Life 2 took place years later in Eastern Europe with the Combine invading and messing everything up. The shift in environments, enemies, and situation logically dictated a new art style. If the next installment changes that drastically as well, then it should also have a new art style. Personally, I’m betting it will look a lot different from both Half Life 1 and 2. Valve doesn’t like to retread old ground in their games, and I agree with them. Why keep going back to the same place, remaking the same places, using the same style? Of course, this doesn’t please everyone but it’s what they want to do. I don’t expect the next Half Life to be any more similar to 1 or 2 than 1 and 2 were to each other, but I do expect it to be up to Valve’s high standards of quality.

Possibly because of the story line arcs.

HL1: Black Mesa and Xen aliens.
HL2: City 17 and environs and the Combine.
HL3: ??? and ???

We still have to wrap up the City 17 and environs and the Combine story arc before advancing to HL3.

They can call it Half-Life 2: Aftermath and go with the “Fuck number 3, we have money” attitude.

It’s funny how you’re all using Portal and Portal 2 as an analogy to how (Half-Life 2: Episode 3/ Half-Life 3) will differ from the episodic models.

Portal was just a test-game VALVe threw into the Orange Box to see how the community would like it. That’s why Portal 1 was bland in comparison to Portal 2, VALVe didn’t want to spend time, effort, and money into something the community might reject.
When everyone exploded over Portal, VALVe went all-out on Portal 2. This time around, they redesigned characters, models, and soundtracks to the style and feel that they had originally intended.

Half-Life 2 was not a test, and everything that’s in the game is the way they want it to look, so the episodes did not change much at all in comparison to Half-Life 2, because there are no restrictions depending on whether or not the community will accept or reject it. And I’m willing to bet that yes, episode 3 will be run on the same updated engine as Portal 2, but no, Episode 3 will not be very stylistically different from its episodic counterparts.

AS for Half-Life 3…nobody knows yet.
So why are we arguing over this?

Spoilers revealed!

HL1: Black Mesa and Xen aliens.
HL2: City 17 and environs and the Combine.
HL3: City Asialand and Eric Fong

Well really if the next HL is supposed to take place in the arctic there really isn’t any way to stop the way it looks from changing.

I wish i could hug you

K.

I just want it to come out.

I think its safe to say that if it was big news on HL3 that there would be more than one thread about it

What else are we supposed to do on a Half Life board? Everything worth discussing about the Half Life universe has been done over and over to death. With no real content to discuss, we fall to what we have left - idle, half-hearted arguments about what Valve will print on the box of the next Half Life game.

Fucking agree.

These goes the idea of the mod I being thinking.

Edit: Ops, forgot I posted.

Dude, chill out damn… gonna have an annurism or somethin’… :fffuuu:

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
