Too late? Have they actually done ANYTHING? ;D
They could be in Episode 3. The arctic region could work well with them having flamethrowers to melt the snow/ice.
not just optional stealth, how about alternate ways of acomplishing the level? Like in Human Revolution? And ofcourse, alternate ending ? HL 1 does have two endings.
That’s actually a good point. So maybe instead of optional stealth ways, maybe break the action with a couple of levels where you must not be seen by the enemy or they’ll activate the Big Bad Red Alarm that automatically kills you or something.
Maybe couple that with a level scale puzzle and you’ve got an interesting level with gameplay that breaks from the norm.
By ‘too late’ I meant that the plot has moved on too far for them to work.
They were originally meant to clean up corpses and rogue Xen beasts which had managed to get into City 17.
Dias mentioned that they could be used to melt ice, which I guess is one use for them, but otherwise they make no sense in the current plot arch.
Even though they were ‘removed’ from the game as far as encountering them is concerned, but they are still present in the game… after a fashion.
The first and most obvious is the head in a jar in Eli’s lab as Black Mesa East.
After that, you don’t see them, but you see evidence of their handwork everywhere. Mostly in the sewers under C17, you find charred corpses all over the place.
Although I haven’t read it personally, I have heard that it is brought up in the book Raising the Bar.
The Cremators didn’t carry flamethrowers, though. They carried some sort of intense acid or chemical solvent spray that dissolved flesh.
Given the fact that the next HL installment is probably gonna have a lot of ice that needs thawing, I can imagine them finally having a use for the cremators.
Because I take decent gameplay and pretty good story for granted when it comes to valve. I’m not worried about that.
The graphics are the only thing I’m sure will be either insufficient or just “okay”, which makes me uneasy because this is fucking half life we’re talking about. This is Valve’s fucking magnum opus. Why would their standards be so damn low?
You know what?
Fuck it.
Let’s talk about the fucking SMG and all the little ways THAT could go wrong. Yeah, let’s fucking talk about the intricate mechanics of the fucking crowbar. Let’s talk about how many fucking god damn teeter totter puzzles we’d like to fucking see.
BETTER IDEA!
Let’s talk about all the fucking new weapons! Yeah! I mean, we have NOTHING to go on other than just one location, so let’s do it! I forsee an icepic, and a flaregun, and a snowblower, and a flamethrower, and some fucking throwable husky puppies with the same functionality as the snark, and maybe some FLASHBANGS! AND YOU CAN AIM DOWN SIGHTS WITH EVERY WEAPON! EVEN THE CROWBAR!
No? Let’s talk about CHARACTERS THEN! There might be a deaf person! FUCK YEAH!
NO? Alright, How about the story? Some people die, Gordon wins and may or may not die depending on if the series continues with him in the future.
You see, THIS is why graphics are among the few things I’d feel comfortable with talking about. It’s because it’s the only thing we have a springboard to talk from. The little step by step changes to the framework are all we have to go by.
Oh fuck no. I really, really didn’t like Portal 1 or 2. If they added stuff like the more complex puzzles in Portal 2, I would complain to them about it. I can understand them possibly doing some of the simple stuff, since we are theoretically going to an Aperture lab, of a sort, but don’t get more complicated than that.
I would at least like a bigger variety of puzzles than teeter totter puzzles, or anything dealing with putting weight on something to make something lift.
It was probably cool when HL2 first came out because it was one of the first games to have realistic physics but I agree. There’s only so many times I can put cinderblocks on the opposite end of a seesaw to get up some place.
While a proper Sniper Rifle may or may not be needed, I would like to have more opportunities to actually snipe people, be it with a rifle or the crossbow. I loved the crossbow, but using it was always so awkward as it fired slow and it was hard to hit people running around and shooting at you.
With this, I’d like more open areas and more ways of going about completing objectives rather than just corridors and straight up gunning people down.
I’d also like to see more mounted guns, gunning people down en masse is some of the funnest things in any FPS in my oppinion. Combined with this, I’d like to see some destructible environments, á la air strike in HL1 and the mortar in OPFOR, that would look amazing with some actual physics.
The immolators shot plasma, not solvent. All of the Immolator sound files in the leak had a “plasma_” prefix, not to mention it set things on fire, which solvents don’t normally do. Either way it could be used for clearing snow, but they could probably just use portal paint physics if they used chemicals.
It’s not about “low standards” It’s about having an audience that can actually play the damn games. What constitutes good graphics is incredibly fleeting & ultimately the lowest priority when compared to art design, gameplay & narrative. Unlike back in 2004 the economy has turned to shit, there are a lot of people who just can’t affoard to upgrade their computers anymore. Valve is a game company, they sell games. It’s more important to them how many games they sell than how pretty everybody things their game is.
Because you can’t talk about anything else without sounding like a pompous ass?
Actually, I haven’t talked about anything in this thread without sounding like a pompous ass.
On topic: If they were to go more extravagant with the puzzles, I hope they don’t paint themselves into a corner with a new engine feature like they did with the physics in HL2. I mean, most of the HL1 puzzles were just pushing buttons and throwing levers, but there was a lot of variety in terms of cause and effect. In HL2, with realistic physics being a huge buzz, most of the puzzles ended up being putting weights on something to make something else lift. If they implement portal 2’s blobs like Dias mentioned, I hope they don’t get hooked on it as the go-to-puzzle element.
I want the long jump module back in HL3, maybe a puzzle with it (but not like the silly xen platforming sequence in HL1)
Everything from “You know what?” to “You see, THIS is why graphics are among the few things I’d feel comfortable with talking about” in that post alone oozes with pompous assholeishness.
Dias…you are just one major asshole trying to infringe something…
get a hold of yourself and stop being so angry
Not sure where he’s being an asshole OR angry to be honest.
hmm…can you actually read?
EDIT: now I’m being a dick. It’s like a virus
Um, clearly I can read.
