Half Life 2 + Windows 7 = FAILS

Last week I upgraded from XP to Seven and now HL2 is crashing.

The thing is, it crashes only in one situation: the Gman speech at the start.

exactly after he finishes saying “…Not that I wish to imply you have been sleeping on the job” it gets stuck (repeating “job, job, job”) and I have to Ctrl+alt+del to finish the process.

then i opened console and unlocked all chapters (sv_unlockedchapters 20) and started from “A Red Letter Day”, and it works like a charm.

I dont know why it is, cause it ran perfectly using windows xp on this same computer, installed from the same dvd.

what could it be? :[

hm… I have no problem with the game in win7 x64. Try flagging the game to run as administrator and computability mode. 99% of the time that fixes strange errors in 7 for me.

already done that to no avail. im running windows 7 ultimate x86.

also, ive started it in developer mode and i dont get an error just before it crashes. what i DO get is (when ‘HALF LIFE 2’ appears) “materials/_rt_FullFrameFB1.vtf”: can’t be found on disk"-

I’ve played HL2 on my rig and the only problems I’ve encountered are getting stuck inside of scenery after barnacles grab me and I crowbar them to Death.

double check user permissions of your half-life folder. Apart from that I’m lost for ideas.

already done that too :frowning:

my last resort is downloading a pirate copy of hl2 to see what happens.

I would resist, at all costs, that solution

i know, it would be the first time i pirated a valve game. but if there’s no other option, then ill have to do it.

SNIP
new suggestion
Install Half-life 2 VIA steam, if it still happens, its a hardware problem
what your probably experiencing is a scratched disc

will try. doubt its this because i installed it on my dad’s machine less than 2 weeks ago, but it doesnt hurt to try.

Pirated a (VALVe) game? Are you hinting at something lol. jk.
Don’t pirate it. Do the obvious and unistall/Re-Install Half-Life 2. I run on Win. 7 and have no problems whatsoever. If that doesn’t fix the problem try opening steam, go to “My games”, right click Half Life 2>Properties>Local game Files, then defragment the games file and verify the integrity of the game cache. After that I’m stumped…

It’s not a 7 issue. It’s most likely a driver issue. Try reinstalling and try updating your drivers. Reinstalling/verifying/defragging might also help.

ive reinstalled the drivers for my graphic card, in fact, ive updated them from the official manufacturer site.

Reinstalling/verifying/defragging already done. ive reinstalled three times. this same DVD works on my dads computer running XP, installed less that two weeks ago.

I didnt mean I was going to pirate it to use it, I was going to see if i get the same error with the pirated version.

crap. double post.

Sound drivers?

Did you try verifying the game cache?

That sounds like a VERY early game bug from when HL2 first launched. How old is the disk you are loading it with? It may not have the patch on it that applied the fix. You’ll need to go online with steam and have it update the game. If that doesn’t work, uninstall it, and reinstall through steam. That’s the only thing I can think of.

It’s not a 7 issue or everyone with Windows 7 would have the same problem. I have no such issues. In fact it works exactly like it did on windows XP without any tweaking.

I have not been able to get a clear answer about this, (In the United States) is it technically illegal to torrent a game that you own? I do not see why it would be.:meh:

If you have legally purchased it, then any way that you acquire it is legal. Except walking into a store and grabbing another copy off the shelf… But that’s just common sense.
