Half Life 2 in HL1 Graphic

All the naysayers aren’t realizing that the objective of something like this is not so much to see HL2 in the HL1 engine graphics, but to prove if it’s even possible to translate the whole game to an older engine and still see if it would be fun to play.

Personally I would endorse a project like this.

I wouldn’t.

Why downgrade an amazing game into worse graphics? Yes, graphics aren’t everything, but moving to an older engine would almost definitely decrease the amount of fun you could have with that game.

The original was perfect! Why remake i… oh shit.

City 17: Gold Source, my computer can run this shit on maxed settings at 60 fps total beast, I know.

Thank you, you get it.

The point isn’t to make a better game; it’s for the novelty effect and the aforementioned reasons from Maxey.

Do you by chance have vsync on?

Yeah it would be cool to see HL2 translated into the goldsrc engine, but I seriously doubt it would be fun to play. The only reason I would attempting such a feat would be to put on my resume.

HL1 won’t stop being fun after BM is released (at least not for me), so why such remake wouldn’t be fun to play? HL2 = fun, even if it’s on the goldsrc engine. I’d play this mod, and would probably have lots of fun.

I’m just saying for me, I don’t think it would be half as fun to play without the source engine.

While I like the retro feel of GoldSRC over the Source engine, for some reason or another I just don’t think this would work. :stuck_out_tongue:

And you aren’t realizing, that a project like that, simply makes no sense.
It would be waste of effort.

The point is, that it is to much work with no real chances for success.

You need a big team, much time and motivation.
And just to prove, that it is still fun to play it on an older engine is no real motivation at all. Because, just ask yourself: Who really wanna play this at the end?

If you intend to make a big project, you need enough people who would like to play it, because otherwise: Lack in motivation and sense.
And as you can see here, most people wouldn’t or simply don’t care about it.

Maybe we’re not making it for other people?
Okay, so are we doing this or not? I’ll set up a site for this project if it’s for real. Post here if you’d like to be on the team and what you can do and if there’s enough of you I’ll start organizing this.

I really like the idea, and I’d love to see the first bit of the game, like up to Black Mesa East, but beyond that I’d probably stop playing. That would be perfect too, because certainly the gravity gun is much to huge a hurtle for a project like this. Think you not Dillxn, would you really wanna make a gravity gun in gldsrc???

Yeah, instead of the full game, maybe just reproduce the most memorable levels, like Ravenholm, Nova Prospekt, the later urban fight levels, train station.

The main theme for Half Life 2 was really the physics, I mean could you imagine trying to get the gravity gun and other fully physics based puzzles to function correctly in GoldSrc?

I have quite a bit of experience programming, so it might be worth a shot?

Good luck mate, nearly everything in Half Life 2 was physics based and, correct me if I’m wrong, would be right in saying GoldSrc doesn’t support ragdoll physics.

Hm, I wonder if we could basically mod Half-Life: Source and make it look like HL1 quality graphics and then we’d have the physics system already made for us…

Actually, I’ve seen someone implement a working physics engine in GoldSrc a few years ago. But for some reason I never heard of it again.

That’s just cheating.

That sounds like it might take a while. :stuck_out_tongue:

EDIT: @Dillxn - About trying to use Half Life: Source as the base of this mod; In the end it is still using the Source engine which is kind of defeating the purpose…

I honestly don’t see the point.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
