Half Life 2 in HL1 Graphic

For novelty.

I was mostly referring to implementing physics in goldsource, since I’ve seen newer gldsrce games that look like current-source, and vice-versa.

Even if this mod was successful, the system requirements wouldn’t change drastically seeing as the same models/textures will be used.

The whole point would be to try and reproduce HL2 as best as possible within the HL1 engine limitations, not to try and push it beyond its capabilities. Basically, HL2 in the HL1 engine, with no bells and whistles added.

Okay fair enough, but doing such a thing would require some very skilled programmers and a lot of dedication.

The thing is though, it won’t be played very much, if at all, because it will have similar requirements to the Source version of Half Life 2 which would obviously be better in every way. IMHO I think this kind of mod would be good for a laugh, but all the effort needed to do such a thing just wouldn’t pay off in the end.

Just how in the hell would it require the same computer as HL2?

Because if this is going to be a straight ‘port’ into the GoldSrc engine then the models/texures are obviously going to be the same which means the system requirements will be near enough the same as Half Life 2.

Nah, man, everything would have to be custom made, because you can’t just port the HL2 models to HL1 and call it a day.

I don’t think you’re realizing just how much of a difference there is between the HL1 engine and the Source engine.

Well, all in all, I think it would be pointless even to try this if everything had to be made from scratch. End of.

By the way, I do admit that I’m not very knowledgable on the Source and GoldSrc engines etc. but I do know they are worlds apart in that respect. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well maybe the prospective developers (myself included) are not doing it so others will play it?

3 Reasons this is not possible:

Physics system: Without heavy modification HL’s physics are lousy.
Environments: Route Canal and Highway 17 would take forever to build, and HL’s draw distance would make the whole thing ugly as sin.
Character Simulation: HL2’s scripting is fantastic and delivered by (1. Talented Voice Actors and 2. Accurately modelled characters capable of expressing emotion on the fly)

You people just aren’t getting it. This would not be a 100% accurate recreation of HL2 in the GoldSrc engine. The goal would be to stay within the GoldSrc engine limits, even if that means chopping the levels into smaller sections.

The whole point would be to translate as much of the HL2 experience into the HL1 engine as possible, without pushing the engine beyond its limits.

It’s what if scenario: “What if Valve had made HL2 on the GoldSrc engine?”

This ^ bscly

So you think people would play an erzats of HL2 with limited graphics and physics ?
And furthermore find a devteam to make such a ludicrous project ?

Maxey still didn’t answer your question Dillxn, about whether he’d want to participate! I think its a cool idea, and I’d love to see it done, but I’m afraid I’ve never done any modding.

What Dillxn meant is that it would be more a of personal project for the devs than something for the public.

Don’t underestimate the will of a HL fanboy.

I’d play it.

Exactly! I wouldn’t care if it looks like shit, it’s like a challenge.

BM is faithfully recreating Half-Life with the following scenario: “How would have Half-Life looked if Valve had the Source Engine back in 1998?”

And this mod would be following this one: “How would Half-Life 2 looked if Valve had developped it at the same time as HL1?”

Again: Recreating a game is a huge project (even for an old engine)
To do a huge project, you need a big team of professionals and much time.

You can only get many professional team members, if a project makes sense.
But because of the fact, that especially HL2 lives from things that could never be implemented (all tries for implementing physics into HL1 simply suck, because it is not nearly as good, but just bad) and no one would really be excited for a HL2 recreation on GoldSrc, there is no way to get the right people to do it.

I tell you, if you wanna make something for GoldSrc, make something else. Something, that wouldn’t require that much time and man-power!

It’s not my intention to goof on you or something like that. I just try to protect you from wasting your time and being disappointed and demotivated at the end.

By the way: Why is this thread still in this board? It doesn’t have anything to do with Black Mesa and should be moved!

Don’t use physics puzzles. Downgrade everything, and work around anything the gravity gun would have done. It would be so bad it would be funny.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
