Gordon's Feet

I remember Valve mentioning somewhere that in HL2 they had implemented physical feet, which allowed the player to trip over stuff etc, but removed it coz it was doo annoying or something, and finished with a comment along the lines of a mod dev could re-enable it sometime if they really wanted.
Does anyone know if anyone ever did that? It might be interesting to have real feet that can’t just hang in the air…

Some guy made a half-hearted attempt for GMOD using deathmatch playermodels:

I dunno, it looks pretty good.

…till you are standing on a ledge and one or both feet are not on the ground…
Does he use the IK feet-placement that NPS’s use?

It’s terrible in that they’re all over the place and turn before the body does. They also use the poorly-timed deathmatch animations.

Basically all he did was bisect a duplicate playermodel and stuck it far enough in the FOV to where you could look down and see them.

That’s less realistic than having your eyes in the air, with nothing holding them above the ground?

Yes, and it’s consistent with the props that you hold floating in mid air with no arms attached.

Can’t wait to see what hilariously bad ideas people will come up with trying to fix that.

In all the games I can think of that involved a real hand grabbing stuff, the only one I can think of that included carrying anything (not including in a pocket) was stuff like carrying/dragging a body in things like Hitman or SplinterCell. (Crysis etc cheat by having the viewmodel reach for an ideally placed item and the real one jumps from it’s actual position into the hand midway thru the animation, tho it does at least make you duck if it would be needed in RL.) Hitman (1 anyway) used IK for everything, so the actual player model actually grabbed things, tho without the ability to flip the orientation of clips of ammo etc it was fairly easy to get his wrist bending the wrong way just to grab things the right way up all the time.

I imagine having some form of IK hand holding whatever you are holding isn’t too hard to do, but quite hard to get right for any given model/orientation etc.

I havent been bothered by the fact that you can’t see his feet… they would just have blocked the view in my opinion. :stuck_out_tongue:

I never really thought it mattered, but as far as I’ve seen, no game that has the feature looks right.

Realistically, if you look down you’ll see more of your upper-body than your feet.

As I remember, Mirror’s Edge did pretty well with it.

Or not.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay did it pretty well. I’d imagine Dark Athena as well, but I have yet to play it.

Way to nitpick.

That’s not nitpicking.

You’re right, Mirrors edge would have been so much better if the player’s hands and feet were invisible

Either do it right, or don’t do it at all. Otherwise why bother doing it?

Unless it adds gameplay value, like if there are indicators of some sort on your body, or if you can wear different clothes or something, and it appears on your player model. Then, you can tolerate ‘some’ bug-ish behavior, but otherwise, it looks silly.

How about Gordon is bisected at the waist, and has to wear a repulsorlift hover-diaper to move around?

Case closed.

If you really think this would look “better” with no visible legs, because in .01% of cases you can have one foot hang over the edge of a building, there is no point in discussing this concept with you - it would be like arguing with a dining room table.
