lol.

Good luck with that mate, I tried getting into that beginning of last year. Help is next to nowhere to be found. Any chance you have got will be found at The Whole Half-Life

You should probably play a Goldscr game and look at the files at the same time. That way you will be able to tinker with the code and see the effects it has on the game. Thats what I’d do…

You’re efforts would better lie with the “modern” source engine. More people are likely to use it and it’s a lot easier (at least to me) to use.

Learn to code first.

I’d like to point out that that domain is outdated. We recently moved to twhl.info
Also, did you make an account and ask on the forums? Coders are few and far between, but TWHL does have a few.

well what are you think im doing?
but there is a problem modding for source i cant use 2009 so i must use 2007 but the problem is
i cant launch it from steam
i cant release because i cant run it from “steam it gives me and error Setuparrayprops (null) index set at zero” or something like that
if you could help me with that i would be grateful

Is there a reason to stick to Valve’s engines? If you haven’t got anything specific in mind you mind want to look into other engines. UDK and Unity for example are great for being user friendly and are highly geared towards people new to the field.

my problem with those engines is that my computer isn’t strong enough to handle them so im using source for now

source, or goldsource? they’re two seperate engines.

also, unity isn’t too graphic intensive for your PC, you can build IPHONE games on it for fucks sake.

that said, i too tried to find some good tutorials on getting into HL2 modding, but found so little on the subject that i just said nothankyou.jpg.

it’s unfortunate, especially since 80% of the people who figure out how to mod the source engine are making terrible mods.

im using the source now but i would like to try the goldsource engine

Why? You realize GoldSource is outdated and no longer actively developed, right? Source is GoldSource’s successor.

How much experience do you have with C++ coding? If the answer is ‘none’, I’d start with a C++ tutorial.

its outdated yes but still there are many good mods check moddb and look check

That said, only a small fraction of people will ever play a goldsrc mod. I played “they hunger” recently, and the engine just doesn’t hold up well enough to take any mod seriously anymore.

Do source. If you want something a bit easier on the system, purchase UT2004 and figure out how to mod for that engine.

I beg to differ, some mods are quite good looking even on ye olde engine(eth).

I admit that it looks good for the engine, but it still looks worse then most low-end HL2 engine stuff. If you’re trying to create a believable atmosphere, then you probably want to be able to put more polygons out and have those extra effects.

It’s maybe not especially important for all mods, but if you ever intend to release a mod that is supposed to scare and/or make you feel like you’re living in that world, you’re not going to do it with the hl1 goldsrc engine.

heey i got it working so i dont need help i figured out so now i can mod on both engines

I made a map of my school for cs 1.6 using stock HL textures a few years ago but apart from that, I couldn’t edit shit

the skill required to fix all the problems you’re having with source is way less than to be able to mod for GoldSrc

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
