But not stoping enought to let him kill you :jizz:

I was actually just thinking about this and what a great excuse would be to actually force the player to look back and see the juggernaut of the Gargantua smashing aside or through the props, and also to take away from a bit of the frustration should there be any minor platforming bits a player could get stuck on that would mean instant death.
I think a direct shot to the eye (preferably with the more accurate firearms) should give it pause, perhaps send it into a brief tantrum where it’s flailing its arms (trying to cover its eye perhaps, which I think would be a great opportunity to show what havoc it could wreak upon any nearby physics affected objects), the drawback being for a very brief period (after the tantrum) it would charge forward much faster than usual.
What is it with you guys and your love of being stepped on?
We’re so used to getting stepped on by Ram and Raw Bean, Black Mesa would just feel incomplete without it
Bad idea. how is the player going to work that one out? Most people would never discover it.
Quiet, you. /stamp
True enough.
Though considering my (and likely many others) first encounter with Nihilanth, it’s not totally against the Valve philosophy.
Seriously though, I don’t think it would be horribly wrong for the downed Security Guard in the power station to offer the hint out.
“It doesn’t seem like small weapons fire will hurt it, but a few shots in the eye sure will piss it off.” Or some such.
All hail the Raw Bean! squish
Gearbox thought about this too, apparently. Remember the final battle from Opposing Force? Gotta love shootin’ that monster in the eye. Thanks to that, I always shot the gargantua in the eyes with the glock when I first played Half-Life, and it took me quite a few deaths and quicksaves to notice that it wasn’t going to work… But it would be an amusing way to annoy the big, ugly thing.
I was referring to the extreme lack of obviousness insofar as defeating Nihilanth on the first encounter.
Crazy that Gearbox had the right idea about something when it came to Half-Life That was a great boss fight though.
Meh, I was sure that I was supposed to enter that pink portal behind the Opposing Force final monster, and got killed several times because I couldn’t move forward…
Now, as for the topic at hand, I really like the idea of shooting the gargantua in the eyes to distract or annoy it. I would certainly waste huge amounts of time shootin, strafing out of sight, and then repeating the process. Endless fun.
I literally just finished playing OP4 today for the first time, and I did the exact same thing, lol (although I learned the first time after walking into a dirty great hintbrush and getting swatted). Although, it did take me a while to work out that you needed to shoot the eyes, shoot the portal, and rinse and repeat over and over. One of the more tedious final bosses I’ve come across.
I’m not sure about this, purely because its ‘eyes’ look just as heavily armoured as the rest of it. Plus, it might make you think that shooting the eyes is somehow part of killing it, when in reality the player should be encouraged not to bother shooting at it and instead lure it into the trap at the end of the tunnel.
I literally finished two days ago. And I agree - annoying thing. Made me wish I hadn’t wasted my sniper rifle’s ammo; there’s nothing better than scoring a headshot on those ugly Shock Troopers that kept popping in. I wanted to cry every time I heard their squeals.
Mmm… Now that’s a good point, I had forgotten about how little the gargantua’s eyes are. Aiming there would surely be a pain. Still, perhaps InterloperX’s idea of having the security guard say something like “Regular weapons won’t damage it, but maybe the thing will get distracted” would help clear things up.
On the first bold statement I mentioned a minor script suggestion that would let the player know that small arms fire would be futile except for shooting it in the eye. Also, that’s a still of the Garg, I’m quite sure that it’s eyes open wider (I’m too lazy to pull a frame from the trailer so be sure to check it out).
On the second, as a BAMF I resent that.
I don’t know if you’ll have enought time to aim the eye while he rampage everything on his way and I’m almost sure that his head won’t be strait when he moves. Must be very lucky or like waste your ammo for a three seconds gap
It would definitely take some play testing, and like I mentioned when I first suggested the shoot the eye idea, it was moreso just to force the player to have a look back to see the Garg smashing through the physics affected objects that were down the corridor.
I’d probably check it out all the same. hehe
Well, you’re standing in an alcove of sorts before luring the gargantua into chasing you, so it’s a relatively safe spot to shoot it.
Until he flames you or stomp the ground to make you fall in front of him
But I’ll love for sure see gargy stomp and crush all props around. Maybe when he can’t catch the player or alone he could play with grunts corps
Hang on, you mean the sole purpose of the 5 trip mines you get ISN’T to kill the Garg? And some people actually lure it to the trap?
Nope, I definitely remember five trip mines barely phasing the Garg. In fact, I’m pretty sure that early in the game the player is sorely ill equipped to even get that sucker down to half the amount of hit points needed to kill it.
I used every grenade, trip mine, and bullet I had to kill him. The trap just wasn’t that obvious.
They lack the imagination needed to come up with something better then just telling people what to do. or things involving bulletproof glass.
