Gabe Newell calls Windows 8 a 'catastrophe'

Nothing that Win8 is doing, such as the ribbon or the boot times can’t be done in other operating systems if those systems used those features. Also, a UI can make a big difference. Sure, you have all those nice features, but what do you do when you have a messy, ugly, non functional UI?

THIS is what pisses off Gabe, not rly much else.

I have the Release Preview, and I’ve been using Win8 since the Developer Preview.

The OS has a number of features that Win7 doesn’t have, which makes it nice (my favorite being the new Task Manager which actually comes in very useful).

But for the most part it is Windows 7 + Metro. It runs slightly smoother, and boots up faster than 7 (on my machine) but seems to have even more problems with backwards compatibility so far. I am hoping MS will fix that.

The Metro part is strange, and I’ve come to not use it at all. When my PC boots, I log in using my email address (it stores your settings and login information in ‘the cloud’), then the very first Metro Tile I click on is “Desktop”, and I do my best to avoid the start screen from there on out.

…Of course, you can’t completely avoid using the start menu always, and I’ve gotten pretty fast at searching for files and apps in the new menu.

The only Metro apps I was using regularly were [b]Reader /b, Pictures (.jpg, .png, etc) and Mail. I’ve replaced those with Adobe, Windows Live Photos, and Outlook.

If Windows Store begins to hurt Valve’s market in someway, I will be inclined to switch OS’s… perhaps Valve can start work on one… :stuck_out_tongue:

GUYS! LINUX!

THIS IS HAPPENING FOR REAL!

Unless you’re a die hard fan of Linux, I don’t see the hype.

They need to get working on CSGO for linux. Windows version runs like shit on my laptop.

I could adjust the GPU voltage on Linux to put the clock at 600mhz+ instead of 430mhz in Windows. It’s a 600mhz chip for fuck’s sakes, properly cooled and silent while gaming, but I want moar powar.

linux is too much like work

Read my mind.

Linux usually DOES have higher framerates. Whatever.

Minecraft creator ‘Notch’ has also voiced concerns;

While Blizzard’s Rob Pardo has stated;

Who the fuck cares what some fat indie developer who made one shitty game thinks

Because Notch is seen as a very successful Indie developer and, as such, his opinions hold a decent bit of relevance to other Indie developers, especially in this situation where an OS could possibly damage their gaming niche.

ever done a fresh install of linux before, maybe something like Ubuntu? You’ll love it…

…The only reason I “got” Windows on a desktop is because of more gaming support.

I am getting sick of windows because of the amount of computers I’ve had to format and reinstall.

On my main PC I only run Windows because of driver support(eyefinity) and gaming.

This is what pisses off everyone.

Close platforms suck ass and its disappointing to see Windows move in that direction. I hope it sells for shit so Microsoft freaks out and never tries to go that way again.

Without a shadow of doubt, his reasoned opinion on how Microsofts strategy with Windows 8 could affect him and other independent artists holds more weight than your subjective and derogative opinion on his game and his appearance.

I don’t like the fact that a reactionary statement about a system (that hasn’t had its details made clear exactly what it will entail) by a man of little concern is being touted as news. I understand that in the sorry realm of “internet journalism” people bring him up as often as possible for pageviews, but this is sickening to me.

I didn’t ask for this!

I have been running the beta. Apart from the extra crashes and the slower nature of it, it is identical to Windows 7
