G-man

I really don’t think so. There seems to be limitations to what he’s allowed to do in “our universe”, he can slow time (possibly only for a handful of people), insert his agents when and where he pleases, but he can’t seem to personally manipulate anything in “our universe” without relaying a message.

We’ve even seen that the Vort’s can block his abilities, I would really hope that a god could get itself around that minor problem.

That said, I think the limitations as to what he can do in “our universe” is part of a contractual agreement. Whether that be between G-Man and its employers, or the G-Man’s employers and some other force.

I think the fact that Gman talks to Cubbage in HL2 is very interesting, Cubbage is an under-analysed character, he takes credit for Gordon taking down the gunship around him and is talked about later in the episodes, but not seen again. His attitude is really odd also.
I think he’s in on the whole deal, like Gman hired him to move Gordon onto a new path, so that’s why he was talking to Gman, and then he assigns himself a personality and prepares for Gordon’s arrival.

That is definitely one of the more mysterious moments where the player can witness G-Man talking to an NPC.

Although considering the briefing he’s giving the Resistance group when you first actually meet up with him, it’s tempting to believe that G-Man arranged for the Rocket Launcher to be delivered to New Little Odessa, I would think the Resistance members would be better versed with the weapons they use to combat the Combine.

Weird, I always thought Cubbage WAS Gman. Seriously, if Gman can teleport around at will and look cool as he straightens his tie, we surely will be able to change his appearance. After all, the moment Cubbage can be spotted speaking with the G-Man as the player views the base through the binoculars could be nothing but a smoke screen to distract Gordon.

But meh, I’m just speaking out my ass here. I blame the British accent.

That is super weird, I was proper freaked out when i first came across that one, it was my 2nd play through of HL2.
Gman there is standing in a boat with a raven on his shoulder and briefcase in hand.

I had seen that one before. The music creeped me out more than the Gman himself.

G-man was added into HL1 to add something into the game that is a mystery to the player

Thing about this is, G-Man’s smoke screens encompass much more than a certain path Gordon is supposed to be taking. If deceit is his game, he rather chooses to hide the overall objective.

@ Felix

I’m sure G-Man’s role has gotten quite a bit larger than simply providing a mysterious pseudo antagonist.

Yup.

no… most of the story was completed then , too bad the detais made important things go unseen…

Raising the bar states that G-man was added after the friendly AI was coded, they didn’t realise that friendlies in a game would be fun, so they kept them in but added G-man as something that is a mystery to the player as they won’t know if he’s friend or foe.

Personally I think the different Valve employees make up different sections of the story as they go along, like the writing structure of Lost :stuck_out_tongue:

Maby G-Man hired Cubbage to try and stop gordon from achieveing whatever hes trying to do that we might not know yet but everyone else does

Yes, because clearly Cubbage in no way facilitated Gordon’s continuing on to Nova Prospekt to rescue Eli.

Geezus.

umm, does under cover mean anything to you??? i mean undercover police for street racers do race although they are undercover… so anything is possible its not impossible that he is g-mans agent working for him gaining freemans trust only to stop him later on

Under this logic one could also say Alex could be an agent of the gman.
This would be a hell of a twist. But it could be made sense, a true purpose to why he saved her.

@reaper

It does, but you don’t seem to really grasp the meaning.

So Cubbage is undercover working for G-Man in order to stop Gordon from reaching Nova Prospekt and rescuing Eli, which is precisely what he -helps- to do.

See, if that was my mission from G-Man, and I had a rocket launcher in my hands, and considering G-Man’s persuasive nature (not accepting his job offer in H-L1 for reference), I think I would have found a better way to stop Gordon than giving him the rocket launcher and telling him exactly how to get to Nova Prospekt via Lighthouse point.

Seriously. Put some thought into your posts.

@TNT

I would have thought that to be possible before the Vort’s saved Alyx’ life and used some of Gordon’s essence to restore her. Considering the Vort’s ability to interfere with the G-Man and their awareness of his power over Gordon, it’s also very likely it would have been at this point they would have discovered that she was an actual agent of G-Man.

She did however serve the G-Man’s purposes when she relayed the “Prepare for Unforseen Consequences” message to Eli, thus causing him to want to use whatever technology is on the Borealis to combat the Combine, rather than destroy the technology as Kleiner would like.

As far as G-Man rescuing Alyx from Black Mesa during the incident, I think this was merely meant as misinformation to cause some hesitation in Gordon as to who to trust. Eli mentions that the only thing he escaped from Black Mesa with was Alyx and the picture of Eli, Azian and Alyx with no mention of the G-Man.

who says g-man wants him to stop gordon from getting to nova… look at the big picture… hes just building trust… and he dosent want him to kill gordon and maby he wanted him to go to nova why dont u put some thought into yours

Why would the gman need trust?
He probably has billions of ways to dispose of people.

Thank you Nosehole for pointing out the glaringly obvious. To those of us whose synapses fire from time to time.

I guess you never beat Half-Life 1, as you would know acquiring trust is not his method of manipulation.

All the same, in answer to your question, you did:

(psst, hence that whole “putting thought into your posts thing”)

Nevertheless, it’s a silly assumption (that G-Man wants to stop Gordon) given that in H-L2 it’s quite obvious that for whatever motives G-Man and Gordon have, both of their objectives are the same (although Gordon’s might stop short of how far G-Man wanted to take it), destruction of Combine’s forces on Earth, and possibly in their home dimension (Episode 3 will tell).

High Five!

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
