Fourth-wall breaking wordage

Rather than making a statement like “Do this” or “Don’t do that”, i’ll just give an example of something i noticed.

in Half-Life2 : Episode Two, in the Antlion Caves, a rebel soldier makes the comment, “Down there, there’s health and ammo, that sort of thing.” Now let me ask you this: When was the last time you walked into a hospital and asked for some health? Have you ever cut your finger at work and grabbed a bandage from a box labeled “HEALTH”? When was the last time you referred to your lunch as a “pick-up” or seen a storefront sign that read “items”?

There are certain words and terminology that just don’t fit right in real life. We may use them repeatedly in games and they all seem perfectly normal, but once spoken aloud outside the context of videogames, some words just sound stupid.

That statement in HL2:E2 bugged the crap out of my. it felt really fourth-wall breaking. i suppose what i’m trying to suggest is that BM refrain from using these terms and words. i know all the dialogue has been recorded already and i’m pretty certain all the textures have been finalized but i reeeeeeally hope Gordon uses medical supplies, arms himself with weapons (as apposed to “guns”) and climbs ladders without pressing the USE key. Winks to the gamer are fine. Humorous and ironic references are strongly suggested. But when a character breaks that wall by accident, it bugs the beans out of me.

It wasn’t in HL, so I guess it won’t be in BM, either.
‘guns’ on the other hand is a fairly common term for ‘fire arms’.

Ignoring how irrelevant your post is and how it doesn’t really offer any suggestions whatsoever, I’m curious as to how you’ve never seen store front with the word “items”. I see it a lot on sale signs and also within the shop there’s usually a “10 items or less” checkout.

EDIT: Cut out some of the quote as I wasn’t replying to it and it made my post huge.

I’d love to see a store sign with “Firearms” not get searched by the police.

Tei, I’m sure the whole fourth wall thing was though out by the devs, and if not then oh well; there’s nothing they can / will do about it now.

Breaking the 4th wall can add to the immersive experience, if used correctly. Hopefully someone could help me out with a videogame reference, but I was reading a review of a play in the times a few weeks back. Some guy’s phone went off in the audience, and the main guy asked them to turn it off in character. The reviewer spoke very highly of it

Spose reaching through the 4th wall can be a good thing, not smashing through it

True, but that is more easily implemented in a Real-life experience (such as the mentioned play) but in a game, the characters can only really react to an in game stimulus, which can never truly break through the fourth wall.

There isn’t a lot of it in the game, but the hologram in the hazard course had a lot of dialog that referred to your keyboard.
It’s all been taken care of. Don’t worry.

Maybe health is just slang for medical supplies? I think you’re taking it too serious.

I have no idea how you people think about things like this. I mean seriously, you get home from work/school, you sit down and start to think about “hmm the name of the health is not realistic in half life! I NEED TO CONTACT THE WORLD OF THIS TRAGEDY”

“Snake, press the Action Button to climb the Ladder”

Fourth-wall breaking bugs me too, but im ok with it if it isnt too common.

This community has been going for a looong time, almost every conceivable and inconceivable topic has been discussed to it’s very death. They’re grasping for straws.

Tei, i think it should be fine so long as they keep such terminology inside the Training Course, and don’t let it slip out into the real game. Although I do agree with you that such things are quite annoying.

Also Scorpion42, you would never go into a shop and ask for health when you meant a first aid kit or something. That would just sound stupid.

“Hey can I have some health please?” They would either think you were on drugs, looking for a nightclub, or possibly both.

That was Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig doing the play “A Steady Rain”… to be honest the guy deserved to be told off by Jackman, it went off multiple times and you just SIMPLY don’t turn on your phone in a play… you just don’t… but Jackman played him off like Keyboard Cat, and then some with class.

But I get your analogy, and while I can’t point you to a specific game, I have definately played a few that interact with you in gaming terms. But in terms of that game its a) essential and b) immersive. It works basically.

I think i’ll go earn some EXP, drain my Mana in thought and heal my HP with a snack.

psycho mantis… 'nuff said.

Fourth Walls are for pussies and should only be left unbroken if you’re a seriously good actor in an interesting production.

Remember: This is 20 years into the future and after the world surrendered to a brutal alien force (I guess they didn’t have any crowbars).

It is possible that, during that time, the slang for “first aid kits” became “health”. Also, it’s a video game. Holy Mackenzie, get it a grip!

The medical supplies in question consist of a tube of green stuff that dissolves and heals all injuries instantly, so why the hell can’t they call it health?

Seriously though, it’s purely a gameplay thing, if not done too much the fourth wall is merely chipped, not broken.

Thanks. i wasn’t really worried or even concerned; just hopeful. i like my games to suck me in. Accidental fourth-wall breaking elements hurl me back out of it. Metal Gear Solid NEVER took itself too seriously and material like that was expected. Plus, it’s 100% intentional. The comment made in HL2:E2 was just overlooked. There was no wink to the audience. it was the proverbial celphone call of the whole game for me.

What’s so wrong with that? :stuck_out_tongue:

Doc quick, I cut my finger.

Gimme a box of health quick, I should be fine then.
