Fourth-wall breaking wordage

Using a whole box for a little cut? Take the smaller cylinder instead, don’t be so wasteful. You know there are dying resistance members in Europe!

What really breaks the fourth wall for me is when forum posters sign their posts. It’s just redundant, since every post by every user is automatically represented next to their username, timestamp, post count, avatar image, etc. etc. etc - when on top of this, people decide it’s necessary to rewrite their alias at the bottom of every post, it just ruins my suspension of disbelief. Sorry to complain, I think its to late to do something about this, its just something i noticed.

Also, @Aze:

Yeah, see, IF real life had a magical “heals anything that hasn’t killed you first” device, you can bet people would freaking call it HEALTH, and no one would blink an eye at it.

A PROPER example of a game breaking immersion/4th wall would be if you have an underwater mermaid race saying “break a leg” before a performance, or a medieval setting that only has swords and bows talking about “time to bite the bullet” In these cases the people are not conforming to their OWN rules, it doesn’t matter if they conform to YOUR reality.

Am I the only one who’s probably gonna ask for health next time I go to see the GP?

:’( I didn’t wanted to see that dude… :frowning:

I agree this has always bugged me, but it’s not that big of a problem.

who is that girl in your sig? jesus christ thats a hot gif

it looks like that porn star from those Basshunter vids

Tron 2.0

They say shit like “press the ‘use’ key” all the time, but it’s fine because you’re inside a computer anyway.

Hey, “Xena” had shitloads of these!

I’m off - googeling something important…

Or when Aragorn shouts “Fire!” to order the archers behind him to shoot their arrows over Helm’s Deep deeping wall (where the shmuck do they invent these names?). The “Fire!” order was not invented until the first military use of gunpowder.

my flatmate is currently writing a thesis on how breaking the 4th wall can actually make a player feel more immersed, or at least garner more enjoyment from a game…

MGS is a prime example, with Psycho mantis not merely breaking the 4th wall, but reaching out of it and moving your controller with the powers of his mind! Can anyone really claim that this broke their playing experience? how about in MGS2 when Arsenal Gear is infected by a virus which starts messing with the game (with fake game over screens going off, and insane garbled orders from your superiors coming in over the codec)? Sure, that may have confused people, but that was the intent!

Further than that, the insanity effects of Eternal Darkness broke many 4th walls (with the fake savedata deletion scenes, etc) but actually improved the game in the process…

Spoof RPG, Hikkikomori, features constant 4th wall breaking moments which make the game awesome. Attempting to go into peoples houses makes the character question what he’s doing, eventually feeling he has no control over his actions and eventually killing himself to escape being manipulated by the player! Awesome!

There’s a time and a place for 4th wall breaking, and it can be done really well, but I don’t think this minor example of “Health!” is particularly game breaking. a minor annoyance perhaps, but no moreso than NPCs repeating dialogue…

Correction: it is a man

It’s Gina Carano, she’s famous for being the only decent looking female MMA fighter.

Actually thats kind of sexist, she’s also a pretty good kickboxer. But still true.

So the suggestion would be… No breaking the 4th wall with slang related to video games? Sounds good, but I’m going to miss the guard that yells “Boom, Headshot. Did you see that one Gordon. Got that one in the head.” Its been awhile since I played so I might have gotten that wrong.

The word “headshot” is not a direct reference to videogames but rather the meeting between bullet and grey matter. A “shot” in the “head”. The word’s been in use since before first-person-shooters.

it is, therefore, not a concern.

-Kawai Tei-

I don’t think the guard ever said “Boom, headshot” specifically…

But they should! Amirite?

Seeing as how Half Life came out before that line was popularized by Unreal tournament? Probably not…

Well, that sentence isn’t 4th wall breaky… ‘boom headshot’ is something anyone might come up with if they’re shooting things in the head.
