First off, I don’t understand how the US is continuing to police the globe. I find it deplorable that the my government has the audacity to make joint arrests overseas for pirated material on the very international realm of the Internet. If these people were really responsible for allowing a safe haven for pirates, shouldn’t that fall in the jurisdiction of the NZ government to deal with? Surely they have more than sheep and grassy hills and possess at least one reputable entertainment industry that can claim injury.
Why does it need to be us to meddle in something that affects all nations? Megaupload is a site that may be viewed by anyone with an internet connection ANYWHERE. You can’t honestly tell me the government has jurisdiction over what goes on the internet without the say-so of the rest of the world…such arrogance.
If anything, this points to the need of an international senate with representatives from all nations with internet service for the express purpose of issues like this. It’s 2012, it’s time we start looking at the internet as the great global unifier that it is…but this is an issue for another time, and I seem to be going off topic here.
Second, even IF the US magically has some power over what happens on the internet, then why in the name of Christ would they shut down MU?
Sure, there are many links to pirated content there, yes it is illegal, and yes such things hurt and cripple the entertainment industry and the hardworking people in it. Fair enough. But MU DOES NOT OFFICIALLY ENDORSE THESE LINKS. It wasn’t blatant about things like the Pirate Bay was, it was not MEANT for pirated software. What went up is the responsibility of the uploaders themselves. To be totally fair about this, they should have gone after them…after all, this is the all-powerful US government, isn’t it? They shouldn’t be outdone by a site like MU when it comes to policing its absolutely STAGGERING numbers of uploads (at one point, it was the 14th most visited site in the world). What’s next, taking down YouTube? (oh that’s right, many of the members of the government release videos on there to remind the country we are in fact the best, so that’s safe…for now)

I’m sure everyone gets a big pile of money anyways. Shit, if I pirate an album and like it, I fucking buy it. And go to their concerts. If I really like a game, I fucking buy it again. I have a 112MBit connection and all the means in the world to “pirate” shit but I don’t. I want to have the original legit shit. US is just stirring up a shitstorm in a waterglass so to speak. Probably because hypothetically he can make the laws behind the drapes while controlling the machine we created to take away our liberties. Think about how you can ruin an economy of a country that owes $14,000,000,000,000.00 to their (Privately owned) central bank if you were the head of that central bank (privately owned).
How many (privately owned) central banks are spread out through the world and of those, how many of those countries are deeply in debt?
If a law like SOPA and PIPA pass in the states I would be willing to bet it can happen in a country if the monetary system is centered around a central bank.

It doesn’t matter what an idiot blogger on youtube thinks. The government can’t just look at megaupload’s records and arrest people who’s IPs match up. That’s not how IP enforcement works, and anyone who isn’t completely intellectually lazy would have looked that up before they spouted off about it.
If the FBI lets the RIAA rummage through the site’s records (or rather, if the RIAA is able to convince a court to force the FBI to hand them over) then it’ll be a problem. But there’s no evidence that they’re doing so. Call me when there is.
