FBI Closes Megaupload and arrests several of their employees

wtf o.o

This seems like it shouldn’t be legal. People created a website to upload files to and download files from and got plenty of legitimate business. And now they’re getting arrested and the site is shut down because along with the legitimate business there was illegitimate business as well.

ughhhh fucking SOPA’d(jk, but seriously) damnit. Now what will happen to all of the legit files and paid members?

You have a house in the middle of a forest, close to a hiking trail. You figure you’d like to make a few extra bucks and open up your garage for travelers to get a drink/rest/wash-up. At one point a junkie comes along and smokes some crack, you dislike it but don’t throw him out because in a forest nobody will notice, right? A few weeks later he’s back with some friends, they all smoke crack, you ignore it. Months go by and your garage has been turned into crack-heaven, you’re getting a decent income so you don’t complain.

One day cops raid your place, find a small army of crack-smoking junkies. You expect the cops to go “ah well, you didn’t smoke crack, you’re free to go”? No, you allowed illegal activities to take place in your own home, you took full responsibility by allowing it to happen, now it’s time to take full responsibility and face the consequences.

What is with the sudden interest in the internet from the U.S gov. They should go back to fighting the terrorists. I just illegally downloaded a university manual that would of otherwise cost me several hundreds of dollars. After years of paying these ridiculous amounts for textbooks (a scam) and education i said fuck that. Should the FBI knock on my door and send me to gitmo. Rupert Murdoch, a wrinkly billionaire, indirectly ordered the hacking of the phone of a dead teenager and other people. He doesn’t get jackshit. Except for a network that perpetuates lies.

Anonymous just hacked justice.gov in response to this.

and as of 2 minutes ago… universalmusic.com aswell, lol!

Really?

Anyway fighting against piracy is a windmill fight.

sudden realization This started after they “ended” the war with Iraq right?
I’m not suggesting that they go back at it, but I think they are just trying to find something to fight and are just bored lazy dumbfucks twiddleling their thumbs trying to find a way to be important or at least “look” important.

seems like the message going around is “If the goverment can close websites we like, we can close websites the goverment likes”

It’s a nice analogy but it’s much harder to keep pirates out of your legitimate site than it is to grab a shotgun and run the junkies out of your house.

While junkies are obvious and stupid, pirates are subtle and smart. It’s just too easy to make a bunch of randomly named .rar files that look legit but are actually just renamed .rar parts of a full game or movie. Hell, you can probably alter the size of each .rar to seem even less obvious.

Well maybe they should’ve invested millions into hiring people to track down the illegal files instead of spending that money on a failure of a commercial that features washed up celebrities.

another site down, RIAA.org

I’m laughing so hard right now.

Osama is dead.
The US government currently doesn’t have any specific muslims to blow up, so it’s got a little bit of free time. Don’t worry though, I heard one of the Republican candidates talk about calling the Turkish government terrorists, so give them a couple of years and they’ll be blowing the fuck out of the turks.

Then they’ll forget all about the internet and we can all go back to normal.

mpaa.org is now also down

I’m going to them as you’re posting but they’re not down yet, they’re going really slowly though.

How many files do they host every day? How quickly can things go up and be removed? From what I saw, it was the individual users’ discretion when things are deleted.

Are you asserting that they should have huge swaths of staff watching each and every single file ever uploaded to Megaupload to check for copyrighted material?

I´m posting as I read about it, and ping them to double check, no response, it may work at some point maybe because it´s in the middle of a ddos attack but yeah

Where are you getting it from?

Edit: Justice.org is up, RIAA is down. I’m going to check the others.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
