Not -your- favorite, you mean
Man this is a hard one. Top three would have to be Louis Black, George Carlin, and Mitch Hedberg. Mr. Black because of his brilliant political commentary, Mitch to this day had the best delivery of any comedian ever. And for those of you who doubt Carlin go look up his stuff, including some of his older works. He is a seriously funny man.
As for me? I can’t chose. All three are hilarious in their own right.
Yeees, Mitch rocked. I’ve seen a fair amount of stuff from Carlin and been shown what people think are his best lines, but I really don’t find him more than ‘pretty funny’.
Also yes Bolteh, I think that was clear. “Not a favourite” as in, “Not a favourite of mine.”
His problem for me is that he’s great when he’s making jokes but he gets onto obnoxious rants about society or whatever he feels like that are never actually funny.
Bill Hicks is for angsty teenagers? Watch “It’s just a ride” on youtube. Then repeat what you’ve just said. Then get hit by the sledgehammer of truth.
HE IS at times bitter and cynicist, and I understand that you may not like that. But he basically tells you that you are deserving of love, we are all one, there is no such thing as death, and that you should not take your “self” too seriously (because it is an illusion), and everyone promoting (self-)loathing is a fanatic and wrong. How is that NOT important?
Ron White is my favorite comedian. Though I watched part of an Eddie Izzard routine and it was pretty funny. Jeff Dunham is pretty good too.
I’m extremely disappointed nobody has said Jerry Seinfeld.
I’d be extremely disappointed if someone DID say Jerry Seinfeld.
Dara O’Briain. I only wish he had some more material… I find myself watching his routines over and over again.
EDIT:
“So look for my new movie next summer. It’s called Rape Stove, The Stove That Rapes People.”
I don’t really know a lot of english humorists, but IMO David Thorne’s pretty amazing.
Assuming you mean British: Steven Fry, Hugh Laurie, Steve Coogan, Dara O’Briain, Bill Bailey, Dylan Moran, Eddie Izzard… Jesus, the list goes fucking on.
I mean English-speaking humorists. Remember: I live in a French-speaking environment, meaning that I mostly know French-speaking humorists. Also, I only know Hugh Laurie as an actor, not a humorist. Or is the word “comedian” being used for “actor” here?
IIRC they had a comedy show together (laurie and fry) in England before Laurie got into drama acting in House and movies, so most English people recognize him as a comedian. I’ve never watched it tho so I wouldn’t know if it’s any good.
Also I’m pretty much the same as you. I haven’t seen much stuff from English-speaking comedians, and when I have I didn’t really bother looking up their names. The guys I really like and look up to are all Portuguese-speaking comedians :p.
What Mith said about Laurie. There’s so much stuff you guys should check out, I don’t even know where to begin.
