Empire State Building lights up for China.. WTF

Yeah, I don’t get the day cube shit.

Well then, where the hell should I go for news?

BBC. It’s publicly owned (as opposed to corporate-owned media which is highly susceptible to influences stemming from the profit motive of the parent corporation/industry which signs their paychecks.) PBS is the American version, but it’s woefully under-funded compared to BBC so their investigative journalism is limited. I’ve also found McClatchy (DC) to do extremely high quality reporting.

As far as independent media, perhaps its greatest institution is the Democracy Now! broadcast. Liberal blogs like Young Turks can be informative as long as you keep in mind their obvious bias - it’s not a secret that those guys are commenting from a liberal perspective. On the other hand, you aren’t going to get many dissenting viewpoints from that sort of media - it’s an echo chamber.

On the same note, major newspapers such as the NY Times occasionally publish excellent investigative journalism - stories are never necessarily false by virtue of appearing in corporate media - but as previously mentioned it is necessary to be aware of the kind of right-wing corporate filtering that information must pass through in order to be published.

Just use multiple news sources. Don’t rely on one thing for news because all news sources have bias.

The biggest problem I have with 9/11 being orchestrated by someone in the US government or big business (pretty much the same thing, which as I said earlier is something MUCH more important to worry about than phantom conspiracies), is how utterly inept Bush ended up looking on the day in question. Even if Bush himself had no knowledge of it, if someone in his administration or otherwise close to him did, they would surely have had a big plan ready - speeches written, reactions pre-planned, etc. Instead no-one seemed to know what the fuck to do and the world saw Bush reading stories to children and looking confused when he received reports. If they planned the whole thing, they fucked everything up except the actual death and destruction.

If it hadn’t been for Bush going to war, he likely wouldn’t have gotten re-elected because in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 people were hugely disappointed or angered and had no faith in him whatsoever, either as being able to prevent terrorist attacks, or respond to them effectively when they happened. The surge of patriotism after the troops were sent off to Afghanistan is what bought him popularity again, until everyone got sick of the Iraq war. So to be honest, I think the cause and effect is all backwards in this theory: rather than the Bush administration orchestrating 9/11 to justify going to war, I think a large part of going to war was to help the Bush administration recover ground from the huge PR disaster of 9/11.

amen. that’s all I got to say about the post above me.

@ Bean

Wholeheartedly agree. If you look at his face when he was told, it’s sheer shock.

In addition to using the war to boost his votes, I think Bush also wanted to finish what his father started.

You tell me how all those soldiers in Iraq are “improving and/or supporting our country” makes them patriots, yet they’re still labeled as patriots! If anything, they’re continuing the radical, illogical trade between blood and oil. Go listen to Eminem’s song called “MOSH”, then you’ll get a pretty basic idea of what “patriotism” is.

I hate cynics.

I know, totally the wrong forum to post that in.

What, this reasonable and optimistic thread? Of course.

It doesn’t matter if you support the war or not (I wholeheartedly don’t) you should still support the people who put their life on the line so that you can sit at home and bitch and listen to crappy music.

You guys are both morons. Jack - Countries need armies, therefore serving in the army is supporting the country by definition, even if the mission the army is enacting (defined by our civilian government) is stupid and counterproductive. Shrike - if you think we wouldn’t be able to listen to Eminem if the armed forces weren’t in Iraq… like I said before…morons.

Its a clear exaggeration to make a point. He already said in his post that he thought the war was stupid. He is merely saying that people in the Army sign up to defend Americans rights, on of these being to listen to whomever they wish to listen too, no matter the quality.

It was sarcasm/an exaggeration. Thank you randm.

Well, they are doing so in the wrong country, then. American rights are being violated by government officials and police forces at home in America, not in Iraq and neither in Afghanistan.

Shock as in “holy shit my country’s being attacked! WhadoIdo? WhadoIdo?” or shock as in “My gawd they really are gonna pull this off - I just hope everything goes as planned and nobody fucks up, otherwise we’ll gonna be in serious trouble!” ?
Can you tell the difference? You should take a look at his face when he was asked by a reporter about whether or not he had had prior knowledge about the attack. I think, if this assumption was so ridiculous, he would have reacted a little different. But that’s just me. He looks more than guilty to me at this point. Panicking. And there would be no reason to panic if the assumption the journalist relayed to him was not at all true.

How about we quit speculating what the expression of shock the president had meant since none of us are phycologists.

By the way, thanks for the vid, the comments are hilarious, mostly comprising of people saying we should water-board him.

Yes they are. The terrorists did the attack to suppres the right to choose what you believe in and virtually suppres an American right. If they’d succeeded in it they would have done more attacks if a few didn’t so the non-believers would go believe in Allah.

This thread needs to be locked before I have an aneurism. Who was the guy that said “I fear for my country when I reflect that God is just” ?

The world’s largest facepalm macro wouldn’t come close to doing this statement justice. Read their declaration of war if you want to know why they attacked.

For fucks sake. He DID have prior knowledge, the Clinton State Dept. knew about a plot involving Usama and airliners (google “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in US”), and they passed it on to the Bush Admin when they left office. Of course Bush is going to look guilty, he fucked up. This shit is all in the public record, but like a good “truther” you are taking actual facts and drawing a stupid conclusion from them.

best comic ever!
