Embryonic stem cell research

Careful garthbartin, its a slippery slope. Following my logic, from the moment a fetus can be shown to experience anything, it is in fact an individual and its termination could rightfully be considered a killing.

It wasn’t exactly your opinion on this particular matter that I like so much but the fact that you aren’t basing your opinion on what your priest says, what your daddy or your mommy says, but what makes sense after looking at the situation from an entirely logical sense. And stem cell research occurs long before a fetus can experience pain.

The miracles that Jesus performed when he was on Earth had a purpose behind them (they were performed to show what God’s Kingdom would do on a grand scale). Having a statue bleeding doesn’t prove to show anything, and in fact I would be more inclined to believe it was a hoax, or more along the lines of something that is there to mislead people.

Anyways, from this post onwards, let’s stick to the topic. The topic is about Embryonic Stem Cell Research.

Huh?

They did scientific research which states that men are more likely to impregnate women if they masturbate more often, since their sperm are fresher and hence more likely to penetrate the egg’s membrane. So, really, Catholics should be the biggest pro-masturbaters ever.

And we must all fear the coming of the Great White Handkerchief.

This must be the most ironic sentence ever stated in this entire thread. So you’re saying that as a Christian, even if you believe creationism, resurrection and the existence of God, then you’re more in touch with reality than an athiest who doubts that there is no scientific explanation to a ‘weeping’ statue?

Anyway, it seems that you’ve sidetracked the thread in an attempt to divert attention from your own (grossly flawed) viewpoints.

Ok then, let’s ponder upon the Christian rationalisation that suffering comes from free will, using the step by step formula.

  1. God is all powerful. Certain fact.
  2. God created everything, because he can. He’s all powerful remember?
  3. God created us too! In fact he made us in his image.
  4. God loves us. Loves us more than anything.
  5. God loves so much in fact he gives us the will to do whatever we want.
  6. Because of this free will people do bad things, and that causes suffering.
  7. But since God is all powerful, doesn’t that mean he can give us free will without causing suffering? Ignore logic, he’s God and can do anything.
  8. And if God loves us so much, why doesn’t he do this?

Therefore God either doesn’t love us, isn’t all powerful or isn’t even there.

The hypocrisy here burns.

I’ve always maintained that his “walking on water” miracle was simply a lucky find of a sandbank.

Or we could get back on topic…

Back on topic! If you wanna discuss your opinions on the ‘Bible’ or ‘Christianity’, go to another thread.

What board do you think you’re posting in?

A board where I edit my posts to make sure I’m saying what I should be saying. A board where you edited what I had before I edited to make it seem like I was saying something else.

I haven’t edited anything of yours. Are you feeling ok?

I have no idea, it’s getting late, let’s just leave this dying thread. =x

I think the topic can be summed up thusly:

“Without bringing religion into the mix, why is stem cell research bad?”
personal feeling
scientific rebuttal
personal feeling
scientific rebuttal
religion
collective facepalm

This very easily could be a collective dickpalm and I think everyone would be a lot happier.

Well, Cup o Joe wouldn’t.

EDIT: Also, wow, I didn’t know this but apparently I argued with Cup o Joe before (he was using a different name) about this when he attacked me for being atheist on steam chat. He brought up this whole shebang and got shot down then too.

Hell yes i love the flaming lips

I’m trying to work out what’s happening in that picture, but it’s escaping me whilst freaking me out.

There is a picture of someones head with the face cut out and flipped around and another face with a mouth vagina and a hand with a tumor that makes yellow lines come out of the head and on the background there are some rocks and a red dot on a blue background its that simple

I thought you said he had a different username?

I don’t care how late I am or how much I’ve missed. As some forum members will recall, I can’t tolerate ignorance in the field of biology.

Dons Captain Science hat and cape

The human embryo develops through a process called regulative (or indeterminate) cleavage. That is, as the zygote develops into a multicellular structure, chemical gradients in the body of the developing organism determine how the various stem cells specialize. Anything that interferes with the gradients cause developmental changes, like birth defects. So, the statement you make above - “appearance is determined at birth” - is true for some organisms (namely ones that develop via determinate cleavage), but for humans, it’s a steaming pile of disgustingly ignorant and contrived horseshit.

A human embryo isn’t a human until it becomes a fully-formed fetus. Before that, any chemical interference - drugs (both illegal and over-the-counter), alcohol, even food additives and preservatives (many of the more problematic of which have thankfully been outlawed) - can interfere with the developmental process, and even a compassionate son-of-god such as yourself would be hard-pressed to call the resulting creature “human.”

I severely doubt it, looking at how he sticks with all his other arguments that have been shot down so completely.

Some nice science by the way.

Cup o Joe, you’re so full of shit.

I love it when the only time you use science is when it’s an excuse to not use science. It’s people like you that make me despise religion. You’re trying to make us feel bad for not believing in your blind faith that you only believe in because your parents told you to believe in it, not realizing that the FACT that even if there is a God, how do you know it’s YOUR God?! Or ANY mainstream God for that matter?!

And I LOVED it when CatzEyez tried to play the victim and how we’re just trying to threaten her beliefs fore the lulz. Well guess that? I have to hear shit from some fatass about how I’m going to hell for being an atheist! Separation of Church is non-existent in this country! Why else do you think Gay people can’t adopt/marry/or even join the fucking military?! On the other hand, your religion has a massive majority, and now they want CREATIONISM in our schools! What the hell?!

But back on topic. Cup o Joe, there are MANY, MANY people that could benefit from Stem Cell research. Many don’t even believe in your shit! So why are you forcing your beliefs on people that could benefit from this research just because “God says so”?!

And by the way: I was born into a religious family. I was Baptisted. It took me a LONG time to figure out that there is no God, and my family doesn’t even know about it, but now I’m free! So don’t give me any of that “well… yur only a atheist cuz u wer born in atheist famly” crap!

I swear if I get banned again for this…
