Duke nukem forever to be finished by gearbox

Little bit of Trivia to note, Gearbox and Duke Have crossed paths before.
If anyone remembers the Boot camp “Training room” part of Op4, The Drill Instructor who quotes Gunnery Sargent Hartman basically word for word shortly after the player leaves the room is voiced by none other than the voice of Duke Nukem, John St John. Who coincidentally voices the national guard Sargent in the upcoming mod No More Room in Hell.

I would play the game in that video. It looks fun enough, which is the entire point of video games right? To have fun.

And Duke was always colorful and childish. It’s called adult humor, but when you grow up (if you grow up), you realize just how juvenile it all is.

I simply have high expectations for Duke Nukem Forever, or whatever it will be called. Perhaps my expectations are too high (waiting ~15 years can do that). I do agree however, that the video in question does look okay and I would play it, but perhaps not MY ideal Duke game, no offense. I also would not consider Duke Nukem 3D colorful and childish, unless you simply consider ALL video games colorful and childish…just my opinion.

Oh and for the record (in case anyone cares), I DO have faith in gearbox. I do not think they will screw it up, but I do accept that it is possible. No company is perfect (Valve included :stuck_out_tongue: ).

Basically, all I am trying to say is that the current iteration and style of Duke Nukem Forever does not appear mature and gritty enough for my expectations. Although it looks like it could be fun, it looks very “cartoony”.

This doesn’t look colorful to you? Your eyes are more fucked up than mine are…

And yes, I find duke humor to be childish. any adult should. I’m not saying that is a bad thing, but it is true.

Its obviously colorful, otherwise it would be black and white :bulb: , but it also has a gritty and dark atmosphere. The new iteration is very cartoony in comparison. I also never said they should remove the humor, I love Duke humor. The humor is NOT the problem.

Have you even read what else I have written? I feel like people on this forum love to pick and choose parts of people’s posts without considering the full message. Its all about the atmosphere that is being portrayed. Duke Nukem forever appears, IMO, more cartoony than Duke3D and I dont like it. Its that simple.

Besides, this is all just my opinion anyway. Im not trying to start an argument.

I’m 22 and I first played D3D when it came out. The game is created in an exaggerated and colorful style. It’s not cartoony, but they were obviously by no means striving for realism. The leaked footage of DNF fits the style well IMO. If you want brown ‘realistic’ graphics go play COD.

Duke3D was as realistic as you could get, for an fps, in 96. Thanks for agreeing it was not cartoony, but please describe how its graphics were exaggerated, while keeping in mind the limitations of the tech in 96.

Also, I do not think brown = realistic, nor want COD graphics. Speaking of colors, who else is a little disappointed with the amount of brown seen in the latest video of Deus Ex 3?

Games that strive toward super-realism are pathetic

That all looks quite exaggerated to me. Especially when you compare to Doom which came out 3 years prior on a far less capable engine.

It’s time to chew ass and kick bubble- wait, something’s wrong there…

to Deathmonkey7: In those screens, Duke Nukem 3D graphics just looks more advanced. I guess Im failing to understand what you mean by exaggerated graphics, sorry.

Who ever even SAID “super-realism” (please define btw) besides you? Maybe you should stay out of this conversation…

All Im trying to say is that I dont want a cartoonish duke nukem forever, I would prefer something that LOOKS (not plays) like Stalker or Metro 2033 for instance. Dark and gritty atmosphere, with all the same STYLE and HUMOR of classic duke. It is definitely do-able because the defining characteristics and humor of duke are not dependent on a certain style of graphics.

Quake was dark and gritty.

Duke was bright, colorful, and cartoony.

I read what you wrote. I just disagree with on almost every level.

You are the first person Ive known to describe Duke Nukem 3D as bright, colorful, and cartoony. It was colorful, because it wasn’t black and white, so I will give you that.

Things exist within a scale, things arent simply THIS or THAT; it may not be AS dark and gritty as quake, but I sure as hell wouldnt describe D3D as bright and cartoony. Most of the game took place at night and fighting aliens/pig cops (which is probably the most comical and childish gameplay aspect of Duke3D) does not justify a cartoony description.

Just for an idea of the style I prefer, here are some early DNF screenshots:

The current iteration of DNF, as seen in the teaser, is not as dark and gritty. Different strokes for different folks…lets just leave it at that and move on.

Wrong thread my bad

so long as there are ten dollar hookers, pipe bombs and door-kicking shenanagans I’ll be happy. The ulimate irony is that the perfectionistic bullshit that has delayed this game for a decade is wasted on fans that would have settled for moar fun and less graphix about 8 years ago.

sigh.

That’s necrophilia…Duke Nukem was already dead, so let him finally rest in peace!

Yes, things do exist on a scale, and Duke 3d looks cartoony to me. I can’t believe that you don’t see it. The new game looks more dark and gritty then the original to me.

I think they should start by picking an engine and staying with it. After all, that’s the main reason DNF isn’t out today; they kept changing engines and having to scrap 90% of the content each time. Also Duke is gritty in a silly colourful way. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, so it’s a fun, humorous experience. (Even if most of that humor is childish)

Don’t forget the 30fps cap for animations

Wat? I didn’t know about that. Meh, it’s kinda bad I suppose, but it doesn’t have the noticeable impact on gameplay that no AA does. Playing Halo pc, I’m just sitting there thinking OH GOD MY EYES ARE BLEEDING.
