Doom fans

Nope, but I do see it as something where uniqueness is nice. Doom was the original. It gets points for that. Unfortunately for it, and fortunately for gaming, games have advanced, gameplay mechanics have improved, and as such I don’t want to play old games that have been done better. Doom has no unique soul to me.

On the topic of MGS4, I stopped actually arguing and started trolling a long time ago. MGS4 does probably have a better story than HL2, but it has far worse storytelling, which is what matters to me. That is all I have to say, disagree if you want, and we shall agree to disagree.

Well, I’m sorry you feel that way. I got into gaming just a few years ago, was spoiled by games like Halo, Half-Life 2, Portal, Gears of War, games that are far more advanced than DOOM was in terms of gameplay… yet, I was still able to see the charm in the classics. “The Legend of Zelda” The Ocarina of Time" is one of my favorite games of all time, and it was 10 years old when I first played it a few years ago!
In short, I love old games. They run well on my computer, and they all have a certain charm to them that not many games today have.
I’ll take “Wolfenstein 3D” over “Call of Duty: World at War” any day.

The cutscenes are ridiculously long, I’ll give you that. I remember when I first played Snake Eater, I just wanted to play the damn game.
Around the middle of the game, I got over it. The story and the gameplay started to blend in, and it was a hell of a ride!
Half-Life does a good job with immersing you into the story, and while I love everything about it, I find Metal Gear Solid’s complex, deep stories to be far better than Half-Life’s simple (yet awesome) good vs evil romp.
Not to mention that it has much more discussion value on forums, whereas with Half-Life, all I see is retarded “G-Man=Gordan Freeman in the future”/“Adrian Shephard returns for Episode 3” theories.
Also, stop using “MGS4” as if it’s the only game in the series.

It all comes down to satisfaction with one’s gaming experience. Comparisons and arguments like this are juvenile, grow up.

Doom fulfills certain gaming desires while crysis fulfills others. Hell, Duke Nukem 3d is old school and fucking badass, so lets throw that in there too. All three are actually NOTHING alike…other than a first person perspective in which weapons are used. At least we can all agree that the FPS style is enjoyable. Other than that, everyone’s opinion will be different and prioritization of one’s gaming needs (graphics, mechanics, story, weapons, enemies, sound, etc.) dictate the desire to play X game at Y time.

Ultimately, its all about one’s opinion and what one prefers. I guarantee you though, there are people, somewhere at this point in time, playing all the of the popular games mentioned in this thread. There are reasons people play different games at different times and there are no rules…so there is nothing to fucking argue over.

On the off-topic topic of MGS, I loved the third, snake eater was the shit. MGS4…I never finished. I forget where I left off, but whenever I would play and start to get into the gameplay, its all interrupted to watch another ~20 mins of cutscenes. Granted, the cutscenes are very cinematic and awesome to watch, but the entire style is too artsy to successfully pull off the story telling. IMO its basically a game for the hardcore MGS fans…who else will be achieving Big Boss status? I still think its one of the best titles on the PS3 however.

sorry dbl post

Quoted for the truth!

Well, it is the series’ ending. You would expect that it would be made for them/us.

Me

I don’t know how I did it… but I did. I’ll leave it at that.

“lol sry double post!”

Even though I didn’t finish the fourth, I applaud them for their intent to design the game with the fans in mind.

Tell that to anyone on the “Kojima Productions Network” forums, or any MGS fan forums for that matter. You’ll get flamed to a crisp Big Boss style by angry MGS4 haters.
Some fans are hard to please.

So we’re the same age, then.

Lucky bastards. I wish I grew up playing DOOM. Instead I grew up with fucking “SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom” for the Playstation 2.

God I hate my childhood. > :frowning:

Bahahaha I remember playing that at my friend’s house. Christ, that game sucked.

I didn’t play Doom 'til I was around 9 or 10, though. The first FPS I ever played was Half-Life against my dad on a LAN when I was 5.

I played Wolfenstein3d back in the old '92…I can’t count the number of times I’ve typed ‘wolf3d’. I didn’t like RTCW as much however…I never got to kill hitler :frowning:

My largest gripes with most shooters in general however, are inconsistent pacing, repetitive enemies, and a lack of proper bosses. HL did a good job with this, along with Doom and Wolf3d to a degree.

Ya know, if your born in the same year as a game, that does not mean you grew up playing it. In fact, babies make up a small percentage of the original Doom players.

Grew up playing a game means you spent most of your childhood playing said game. I suppose childhood can be anytime before adolescence.

I was born in 85 and the first video games I played was the Space Quest series (sierra adventure gaming). My brother and I would play together and once I could type on my own I played by myself. Space Quest, Wolf3d, Doom, Duke3d were the main computer games I grew up playing.

I had NES, Genesis, and N64 for consoles. Alot of games but only a handful of favorites. I dont want to get too off topic but Im going mention Turok 2 for N64. Probably one of the most underrated games, it seems a lot of people have never played it. Oh and the N64 controller was amazing for FPS (walk with C-pad, look with analog stick, shoot with Z).

I’m sorry OP but Wolfenstein 3D DID start the craze!

What is your problem? I thought the Doom Movie was good. After taking a second look at the first person part…it becomes more realistic.

Wow that’s a fail right there. I think my first game that was presumably “MINE” was Hot wheels Stunt Track Driver. I played Unreal Tournament in 1st grade. It was the shit…I always wanted DOOM3 so bad…then eventually I downloaded full version for the hell of it. It was cool. the multiplayer was hilarious…you could bunny hop around the entire map and shotgun snipe people. I also played donkey kong 64 and battle tanx and shit like that when i was like 5 or w/e. After those days I got into call of duty 1 and I think Counter-Strike Condition zero was my first valve game…then half-life 1 and half-life 2 (I think???).

You say that like it’s a bad thing. :stuck_out_tongue:

I liked doom, but DUKE NUKEM 3D FTW. It pwned dooms ass.

I have to agree that mgs4 (and the whole series for that matter) is pretty damn heavy on the story telling and cutscenes, but that is one of the things that i love so much about the series. imho, its all about what you are looking for.

I first played the shareware version of doom when i was 9 and i loved it. If i want to just go around and just kill everything in sight, then i would turn to the doom series for that.

If i want story intensive, i go metal gear solid.

If i want an incredible story with incredible and unbroken gameplay, its half life.

The problem is when people try and put their opinions on a pedestal and try and compare games like that. I haven’t played doom 3 yet, but from the demo i still think that it is something worth playing at least once. But you can’t take different games like half life, mgs, doom, or whatever and come right out and say that one is clearly better as a fps, because they are each in a different subgenre.

Oh and Johnkiller you are my new hero.
