DOOM 3 BFG Edition... save your money!

That’s pretty cool. I didn’t expect that.

Absolutely seems the case!

The way id reps talked it up though, they were going to take advantage of this opportunity to address things that they fell short of for the original Doom 3 PC edition as well. All this “respecting the history and value of our PC roots and not neglecting our PC customers”, what a load of crap. They are masters of self-promotion and marketing smooze. John Carmack seriously blasted the overall quality and serious mistakes id made with Rage, at Quakecon in Augest. I hope he unloads a double-shotgun blast on this BFG edition, as well. He’s generally not one to hold back his personal thoughts when something is not done right. I wouldn’t trust id’s Tim Willits and Todd Hollensheads as far as I could throw 'em. They’re “yes” men, incapable of admitting or recognizing the recent mistakes they, and id Studios have made. Please excuse my rant.

Excused.

Has anyone played these new missions yet? Are they any good?

To be fair, here are side-by-side comparison videos for D3-BFG Edition, one for PC and one for XBox. I’ve linked the XBox video in support of Xalener’s earlier post that this new Doom 3 BFG Edition is geared more towards current consoles than it is for the PC.

For PC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPSVLI6lEoI

For XBox: https://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=R0XiKptpqZE&feature=endscreen

This may help you to decide if it’s worth your money or not.

What what I’ve seen and read, The Lost Mission is a combination of cut materials from Doom 3 2004 and some new content. The pace of the game is higher with more enemies to battle, but there’s more ammo spread around to help you cope. Here are some links showing gameplay, with minor spoilers.

Enjoy.

Some of it is literally copy pasted from existing levels in the game

First pic is lost mission, then regular Doom 3 levels under:

This rerelease feels a lot like the Chronicles of Riddick rerelease. Nothing major changed from the original game, but with additional expansion levels.

Good thing this was an alright game to begin with.

I know it’s debatable but for as much of a shitstorm it’s deviation from the IP convention raised, it’s still got quite a lot of love from many corners.

I’m actually glad they did this, I just wish they’d leave the PC out of it. Doom 3 missed the consoles the first time, it’s only right to re-release it like this. I just wish it could have been a free patch for the PC. You know, a fix for the HUD and native resolution issues, all that shit.

I mean those improvement’s aren’t unwelcome, are they? As half assed as this re-release is, that kinda needed to happen. It just sucks that this is the way it had to happen.

It didn’t miss consoles the first time, it came out on Xbox. Why do people keep saying that?

Cheers for info people.

Seems to me to be simply more of the same, but not even with the kinda build up in tension Doom 3 tries to portray due to the pretty boring and uninspired scripts they seem to be using.

As for the reused assets, assuming they aren’t actually supposed to be areas we visit in the main game, I find it to be quite lazy on the developers part.

Personally I’d of found it to be a better package if they’d of added in multiplayer on consoles ( I don’t think they did? ). Otherwise there is literally no point imo to buy this if you still have the original version, which is incidentally backwards compatible. Especially more so if you have the original on PC too.

Ah well, more money to save for something original! Cheers people.

I honestly don’t think Doom 3 is nearly as different from the originals as people make it out to be. I mean it’s different, but people act like it’s NOTHING like doom.

And fuck, for the longest time I didn’t think doom 3 was that scary, but I completely forgot about the trites. I hate spiders in all forms.

I’d agree. That kinda archaic design to computer games is in the past ( as good as it was ). People wanting that nowadays should play serious sam.

You hate spiders?! But they RULE! I have a tarantula! Remember they eat all those pesky bugs! The abilities of their species are unbelievably awesome! They are some of the oldest animals on the planet! What’s not to like?

theyre creepy as fuck

Because it was hacked and slashed to shit. I don’t count it as a full release.

It’s really not THAT bad at all, plays perfectly fine and it came with Co-Op, as well as the original Doom and Doom 2 in the collectors edition.

Either way, even with it’s additions it wasn’t the full original game. Plus ofc there’s the whole “hurr durr it wuznt hd” bull too, so that’s the perfect excuse to re-release it for this gen.

To be honest, I’m all for it. Anything to get them back on their feet after Rage’s reception. There’s no reason why they should have released this on PC other than the exclusivists going “DEY DINT RELEASE ON PC DEY RLY DO H8 US NAO FUKK IIIIIIDDDDDDDD”. They were set up for a lose lose and went with the lesser of the two evils.

I just don’t understand why they proclaimed they redid the visuals in HD when they just didn’t… all the textures are painfully blurry (it didn’t age horribly, but the texture resolution has obviously been untouched.) The models and entities are also clearly not touched up… I’m not sure they know what makes an HD remake.

Also the position of the flashlight is annoying as fuck

It’s an HD remake because the console version is rendered in HD now :stuck_out_tongue:

That was the -whole- point of this re-release.

It doesn’t help that its now brighter and thus easier to see the low res textures.

Hate, as in they creep me the fuck out. Especially the Doom 3 trites because they too look more creepy then “cool”, as opposed to say, arachnatrons.
