DOOM 3 BFG Edition... save your money!

My original post was more about how ID has taken a back seat to other developers, but regardless, while I liked the gunplay in Rage, I wasn’t really a fan of the designs or really much about the game enough for it to keep my interest. I haven’t actually played it since 2 days after I got it. I’ll give it another chance eventually, of course.

And also, when I said “I” would give them a chance (I as in me) if they released a good PC version, it’s more towards the fact that I no longer have a console, and have no reason or desire to get one again (most of my friends who have a console have either stopped playing or moved on to PC gaming)

I was tempted to get this but I still have Doom 3 and RoE on PC, so forking out for what would literally be just the mission packs seems pointless. Anyone played these yet? I’d assume if they weren’t worth releasing before they’d have even less relevance now.

Add to that I have Doom 3 collectors edition for the original Xbox, which is backwards compatible for the 360 with its addition of both Doom 1 and 2, there is literally no point in my buying this.

In regards to RAGE and the ID tech 5 engine. I was highly impressed with Rage, even if it was clearly a console game and far too short. It certainly wasn’t strong in the story, however the world itself was extremely well done and the texture(s?) was(were?) astounding.

I think megatextures really are the way forward when it comes to game worlds as Rage is one of the most visually diverse and appealing of recent memory.

Does anyone think that single textured items with their own physics would be jarring to the player in comparison?

In conjunction with sikkmod I got a higher poly mesh mod

DAT IMP HEAD

They didn’t even bother to rearrange the HUD elements for widescreen? what the fuck did you pay for

Umm, the only difference in story between Doom 1 and 2 is that you go from “kill demons form hell while probably listening to Metallica” to “kill demons form hell while probably listening to Alice in Chains”. You’re talking about the guys who thought that games were like porn and didn’t need story. I guess they were right with that one though oh nooooooooo

The gameplay was always the major appeal. Although Doom 3 didn’t carry over the chaotic shooty fun from the original Doom, it still wasn’t that bad a game. It at least had the decency to create a atmosphere of dread when it’s not showering you with monster closets. There’s certainly far worse shit out there cough FEAR 2 cough.

Also, what’s the point of having the flashlight activated all the time or Wolfestein levels with no Nazi imagery? The first just destroys half the scares in the game and the second makes the levels look like they couldn’t be bothered to make bonus levels.

They did, I’m not playing the BFG edition

The statement wasn’t that id made those games it was a rebuttle to trying to say that PC centric elements are what will make id a good company. To be frank that isn’t. If id’s next game is a good game via use of those 3 things then id is still a good company. id having a good story isn’t impossible, Doom 3 was decent for what it was because they hired a sci-fi writer. But ids games have all had good gameplay and art design. As long as it isn’t buggy as fuck I’m fine with poor PC ports. I complain and ask devs to make better ones but it doesn’t make the game itself bad just the port. Rage was unplayable on release but that was an unfortunate mix of drivers and such. Oh and the unfixed fact that it cannot create its own local app data folders. Once all that was shorted out it was fine, I didn’t have a single problem with texture pop-in either.

When did I ever say that? All I said is that I’d give them a chance if they release a good PC version, not that they were a bad company because of it.

This was when you said that.

… and don’t forget Wulfen’s texture pack v2.0 and Monoxead’s Mars City texture pack. They make a huge improvement to the visuals. Just need a decent powered computer to play it all. As I said, Doom 3 looks stunning when using them all.

I’m using them, unfortunately Parallax Occlusion Mapping + Soft Shadows kills my FPS - so I’m using soft shadows instead. I could use regular Parallax mapping, but it applies it to characters and weapons too and makes it look completely fucked up.

This was in response to “giving them a chance”, it had nothing to do with them being an actual good developer, since I don’t have a console anymore so I would only play it on PC. I never meant in any way to imply that a good PC version makes them a good company, again, explained by my post at the top of the page

EDIT: Shit double post

That would be the model, not the texture >_>

Link? :stuck_out_tongue:

I was already going to play through Doom 3 again, I’ll definitely get some of the mods mentioned in this thread before I start.

Thanks, and corrected <_<

I nearly bought this today the box looked nice and shiny but I did not want to believe that it is no good… Then I came to my senses and realised it’s one of those second hand games and can buy it later on… But I really like doom 3… I’ll pick this up for PS3 soon I have the original but won’t crack that out because it’s burried in a box in a shed

Sounds reasonable, as the whole point of this re-release was to put it out for this generation of consoles (because it missed the last one).

Source code for BFG edition incoming

… the shed where you stashed the bodies? I saw what you did last Summer!

Thanks for the heads up. The only way the BFG versions of Doom 3, RoE and Lost Mission can be saved is by the modding community, if they even bother to do so.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
