Dont kill the scientists! OR ELSE!

Very well, then, if you weren’t pointing fingers at Catz, I agree. He’s twelve…lets see…when I was twelve, I was sticking marines in Halo for the fuck of it. Course, I always reverted to the time before I went maniacally mad. On a similar note, I was blasting Nazis away in Wolfenstein when I was 4. While sitting on my father’s lap. Good times…

Morality, in video games especially, is an interesting subject. There are some who just take it as a game and have fun, then there are those who instill their own morality into the game. Most people fall into the second category. It’s what makes games like Mass Effect enjoyable. You aren’t limited by your avatar’s morality.

That being said, I myself am always kind to those who are kind or nonthreatening to me in a game. For example, Blood Omen 2 has you walking around populated towns as a vampire. Normally your only enemies are the Sarafan warriors who guard the towns. The peasants there, men and women, don’t recognize you for the blood-sucking fiend that you are. It is possible, and sometimes encouraged, to kill the humans on the streets and suck their blood for a health boost. I never do that, though. They don’t bother me, I don’t bother them. Except for the dick that calls the Sarafan on you in the second level…He deserved to die.> :frowning:

I think it is a reasonable rule to say “no killing the good guys. Hunt down and kill all bad guys and monsters but no killing the good guys.” Whether you think this is stupid or not, that it is not a true moral guide or if it is not enough… it is really beside the point. It is the only rule I have with games, and I am sticking with it.

That said, I would like to implement something for all good guys. Scientists, guards and whoever else is considered a good guy. No the marines are not good guys cuz they are there to snuff you (a civilian) out. Besides, you cant get anywhere in the game if we implement no killing the marines. hehe

Anyway…

Can something be bound to the shoot key that will help in this? Yesterday in Black Mesa chat, Dan said to do this:

[COLOR=‘SandyBrown’]bind “MOUSE2” “+attack;exec mom.cfg”

and then the mom config has this:

[COLOR=‘SandyBrown’]ent_fire npc_citizen addoutput “OnDamagedByPlayer !activator,ignite”

But there are two problems with this.

  1. I wanted code for Half Life… not Half Life 2
  2. I put this in for Half Life 2 and it is not working. I must have copied the info wrong?

Haha, yesterday in chat I thought you were preparing for unforseen conse–erm–preparing for Black Mesa. I was gonna say, it’s a bit early to tweak something that only has a tentative release date.

That being said, I don’t believe anyone here has the right to encourage you not to implement this. I personally think it’s awesome! I always found it wrong to kill the scis and guards; they’re the good guys!

I personally don’t know anything about coding, so I can’t say much on that…But I like the idea.

I still think that when you kill them they should explode with a scream of “FOR ALLAH!” and raze you.

EDIT: It makes sense, too. Although it’s difficult to teach morality, it’s easy to imprint certain traits through practice, specifically in games. Being kind to the good guys in games can and will translate to real life. I mean, whenever I got pissed at something, I loaded up HL and tortured the scis, but I never actually continued that particular game. I always loaded the last known point where I was sane (or at least looked it…) My brother has followed suit, and always says “DON’T KILL HIM!!” when his morally deprived friends play on the 360.

You’re an awesome mother! I wish my mom understood it all as well as you do…Beating back waves of unded in Oblivion only elicit “That’s terrible.” On the other hand, my father always says “Kill that dude trying to sell you shit. He’s annoying.” Two sides of the same coin, I guess. =/

"my father always says “Kill that dude trying to sell you shit. He’s annoying.” "

hahaha winged!

One concern: if you hit a security guard by accident (they’re known to rush into your field of fire or where a grenade might about to go off) they will shoot you. Security guards can also shoot you in general if you’re between them and your target…though that’s another matter.

If your son accidentally hits a guard due to the guard being dumb and the guard starts shooting at him, are you planning to make him die and reload?

as long as it is optional I’m completely fine with every solution. I still want to be able to kill scientist but also have an option to have a text appear where’s written “Don’t kill the scientists” incase my little brother is watching.

This is for her own personal use.

How about when a scientist (or a security guard) is shot a text appear on the screen showing:

…Or something similar? :fffuuu:

EDIT: oh well… ninja’d.

rofl

That would be awesome.

But, as mentioned, if the scis walk into his stream of bullets, that would suck.

Then, the best solution would be to make this text appear only when the scientists are killed by the player, and not only injured. The scientists don’t die that easily in the game, and since they need many bullets to die, the player should have enough time to realise that it’s a scientist before stopping shooting at him. However, the problem is not solved for the security guards who starts to shoot at you when you injure them. The only solution would be to run away…

The reason why it doesn’t work in hl2 is because you can’t harm the citizens anyway. No damage taken by the citizens, no script.

I would say this would teach him to be rather careful of where exactly he is shooting then eh? Sort of like what Vice Prez Cheney should have been doing huh? lol!

I suppose that would be better than nothing…

Tough cookies. Aim better next time, or push the stupid sci to the side before you spray.

Again, Tough cookies. Aim better next time.

Then why did Dan say it worked for him? I smell a rat!

Well, innocent peeps get slaughtered everyday. Some by accidental gunfire. The scientists were going to die anyways in the hydrobomb so whoopie! He ended their lives a little earlier than expected.

They could have escaped with Barney, who knows.

Meh, the ones that escaped with Barney escaped with him. They were no where near the (if chosen to be so) destructive path of Gordon Freeman.

Catz, you’re a model parent for gamers.
You let them play the games, but you also make sure to instill the morals into them.

Really, the only way to do this is to modify their health/sounds, or make a mod with custom code. :frowning:
Make sure he understands that human lives are precious, and don’t let him near the GTA series until he’s at least 15. At least.

Can we try to be a bit less offensive in a thread that doesn’t require any? (Nor do any other threads really, unless it’s spam)

Oh common, it’s a joke, man.

I agree. This is what parents should do (not modify game files and stuff :stuck_out_tongue: ) instead of trying to get the games banned or suing the creators because they were too lazy to read the rating.
