Dont kill the scientists! OR ELSE!

Ok, so you could basically say I am a cool mom cuz I let my 12 year old play half life. As a matter of fact, he was weened on Half Life cuz I used to have him sit on my lap as a youngun as I quickly and efficiently dispensed with the zombies and vorts and such. Ah good times! Such wonderful bonding moments as both of us would get freeked out at the monsters jumping out of everywhere.

I simply do not buy into the “Video games make our children killers!”

However I do have one rule. He is not allowed to kill the scientists in Half Life. I still catch him doing it once in a while so now I want to get back at him.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I could implement a “shoot the scientist and you die” or “shoot the scientist and the game reloads” or “shoot a scientist and the damage is done to you instead of the scientist” or like we tried during today’s black mesa chatroom, “shoot a scientist and you engulf in flames till you die or you lose tons of damage” (that didnt work)

Anyone have any ideas? I know how to mess with the config files, so I think this is how I want to implement it, but I dont know the commands to do it.

Thanks for your help!

Just make him play the german version. If you shoot a Scientist, they sit down and headbang instad of drop dead.

For his 13th birthday, let him download “Scientist Slaughterhouse”

Haha, oh wow. That’s evil. But yeah. German version all the way.

Wait, you’re okay with him gibbing people in large explosions but not killing scientists? But, yeah, the only way to go is the german version I think, which sucks so incredibly badly. This badly in fact.

How about changing the scientist death sound to an audio recording of you yelling at him?

great idea .D

or you may put there an invalid wav, so that when he kills a scientist game would simply crash ,)

Well then even if a scientist died in a normal way, say via scripted sequence, the game would also crash/ he’d hear her yelling at her…

Either replace all the scientist “My god, what are you doing” type lines with wavs of you yelling (You’ll need GCFscape, I can’t be bothered to make a list right now, sorry)
Or, make a custom map or code that changes the scientist deaths to what you want.
CFG files won’t do it for you, sorry. :frowning:
EDIT: you could give the scientists tons of health using the skill.cfg file, just open it with notepad and change

to:

(for example.)
You can also make the NPCs attacks do negative damage (long story about top secret stuff in my mod, don’t ask) although the shotgun will crash the game if you make it negative.

If you wanted to, though, you could just make whatever weapon he usually uses agains scientists do negative damage.

oh, now i see who did these

yeah… that is him basically. I wanna make him regret taking out the sci’s.

I don’t see anything wrong with it. It has no consequence because it’s a game. At 12 I was kicking back with GTA 3 and just plowing through hundreds of pedestrians with a firetruck just to see how far I could go before I was killed or arrested.

In fact I think it’s a negative thing to impose consequences for doing bad things in a game, even if it’s simply telling him not to. That’s more likely to encourage it.

I’ll let my kids play violent games once they’re 11… otherwise I’d be a hypocrite. Besides, I’m against censorship… not absolutely, of course children have to be protected from really disturbing and disgusting things… but I think keeping things from them at teen years does more harm than good.

If you could find a way to garble up the friendly fire commands to completely crash the game, I’d say that’d be your best option…

Of course I don’t know enough about half life or scripts so I’m not sure how easy that’d be.

I know that I wouldn’t be shooting scientists if I had to load the damn game up every time.

I’m a programmer so one of my jobs is to understand how it works. My only problem is I don’t know what Valve did with their c++ code and without that I don’t know what valve did with their crap and such… I may be able to make a script however I still need to understand it.

Also a question… Is this Half-Life GoldSrc or Source?

GoldSrc.

I don’t know if you noticed, but Catz did not ask for you to criticize her parenting. She’s asking for a solution to a problem.

That doesn’t stop this from being the internet.

Is this ban limited to scientists, or are Security Guards included as well?

If this is the case, why is he still allowed to gun down hordes of soldiers and blow helicopters out of the sky?

no violence:
act1, gordon approaches black meas
act2, resonance cascade
act3, gordon calls support: “oh hai, there’s something wrong happening, i think i broke something, could you fix it? … oh… ok, of course i won’t touch anything until you come!”
act4, here guys from service center come to fix the world.
happyend

The goal here is to instill morality in the child (I think). But that is a good question, Catz, do you want this to happen to the security guards, too?

I don’t know if you noticed but I didn’t actually criticise her parenting.

I simply contributed my own opinion as a person who has played violent video games at a young age. My opinion being different from hers doesn’t in any way imply that I’m criticising her. But if you want criticism maybe you yourself could find something to contribute to the topic other than jumping in head first and pointing fingers, blatantly stirring up trouble.

To me the solution to her problem would be to not treat it as a problem. Kids will be kids, and if they want to play a game improperly they will regardless, treating it as being naughty will only encourage it. Games should be a consequence-free environment in which people can be free to express themselves in ways that are unacceptable in the real world.
