Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Here in the United States, the government is mulling over the idea of repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. For those unfamiliar with this, here’s a bit of history:

During the President Clinton administration, a law was passed called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” which said that homosexuals could serve in the military if, and only if, it’s not revealed that they are homosexual. If they say they are (or, weirdly enough, someone outs them), they are discharged from the military.

President Obama has stated that one of his goals is to repeal DADT and allow homosexuals to serve openly in the military (i.e., they cannot be discharged simply for having it revealed that they’re homosexual).

I’d like to hear perspectives on this from both the American side and from people in other countries.

I’ll provide my perspective a little later but I want to hear from you guys first.

Good. Actual freedom now. Go kill something you Homos!
:stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t see why they shouldn’t be able to serve, but I could imagine that they’re going to take a lot of shit for it from everybody if they’re open about it.

The way I see it is:

I don’t care if you’re straight or gay, just don’t try to put the moves on me and we can be friends.

IMO everyone deserves the same rights. Just don’t be a douche about it. (good luck with that, most people are douches in one way or another)

Gays are too precious to risk in combat.

hate to tell you, sexually confused military men, but gay guys will PROBABLY not hit on you if they don’t think you’re gay, and if they do they’ll 99% of the time stop when you tell them you’re straight

next we just need to work on all those women in the military that are being raped and sexually assaulted by the men.

If someone wants to serve our country, I respect them and always will. I don’t care if you’re gay, straight, or bi. If they want to fight for our country it’s an honor to have them in the military.

EW HOMOS

no i dont care about people’s sexuality any more than i do about skin colour or hair colour or whatever

I don’t even understand the purpose of this law. It’s like they think gay people fuck anything that moves. Or some other weird form of logic.

This law is gay.

one word: homophobia

Here’s my question. Why don’t we leave it to the soldier to decide in each branch, and then if they don’t want it they can get rid of it? If they think it will drop their morale, I trust them more than politicians. I recognize its hardly fair, but then again, we are sparing gays the chance of boldly going to their untimely death.

The military says that it wouldn’t drop morale, unit cohesiveness or anything else like that.

But then if I served in the military I can’t pretend to be gay as an excuse to get out whenever I want.

The polls (reliable or not) say that a whole lot of people in the military wouldn’t care if a gay person serves in the military openly or secretly.

@Someonerandm
umm because ppl join the military in the first place because they’re uneducated and insecure about their masculinity and those are the worst ppl to consult when it comes to homophobia
not the mention the law is p. much blatant discrimination against ppl for something they can’t choose so is p. much no better than saying “WELL UR A BLACK WOMAN AND BLACK WOMEN ARE WHORES U CANNOT SERVE OK BYE”
also lmfao “sparing” them just like denying them the right to marry is “sparing” them of the ~misery of married life right? okay

Methinks that the military shouldn’t take people that cannot trust their fellow compatriots. How stupid would that be?

pretty sure that was a joke though

I HATE GAYS

These kind of people shouldn’t even exist in a tiny piece of earthland. That’s offbeat!

why?

individual thought, it’s fucking disgusting.

you are not one of them, are you?
