Meh.
But don’t get any ideas devs.
I saw this coming since the first batch of screenshots.
am still sad
/\ agree.
I would have played it as a mod to see the graphics, but I am definitely not going to buy it just for eyecandy.
Depending on price, I may still get it. It’s not just eye candy, the level design has been changed so much, the audio triggers(which were, lets face it, a little bit shit) have been remapped, and the score has been reproduced. I would have thought that last one might carry more weight, but it seems to have been overshadowed by graphicsgraphicsgraphics
I had a feeling that this might happen… Graphics are all well and good, but I think I’ll wait on some feedback about the actual game before I make any decisions.
I always felt the original would have been more enjoyable as a text based adventure anyway.
I agree with Siggs, too. Depending on the price and some early feedback about the gameplay/game performance, I will be considering making the purchase. My guess is that it’s gonna be less than $10 anyway and the videos and screenshots already look amazing.
So it is actually a game? I thought it was just a “look how far we can push the engine” sort of deal. I might buy it if it is going to have a story/things to do other than just look at stuff.
Depending on price of course.
If it’s anything like the original Dear Esther but with updated sparkly new graphics, meh.
I didn’t find Dear Esther to be that compelling, to be honest. I was bored most of the time just holding the forward button with my head leaning on my hand.
dammit.
This clearly shows the misguided sense of entitlement that some gamers have.
Project starts as a free mod, looks as good or better than commercial projects, eventually it turns into a commercial project too and people start bitching about the change of heart. So what? Did they feel they deserved the free mod? Is it not a sign of how talented the creator is, when a company like Valve recognizes the quality of the project and gives them a Source engine license? Is that not what every modder out there dreams of? To have his work and talent recognized and go work for the industry?
People are so damn stupid.
Agree Maxey.
Eh, I will not buy this for anything over about 5 dollars. Honestly, I’ve never really liked the whole gameplay style. I found it boring. I really just wanted this mod as eyecandy to show off to my friends how bitchin my computer is. I’m not going to spend much more than 5 dollars for bragging rights.
Its not a false sense of entitlement. Its just the gaming industry is the only one still partially aware of the fact that the consumers are the ones in power not the other way around.
If a game company does things that I find to be underhand unfair and such like fuck them they aren’t getting my dollar. They can go out of business. We as consumers are in control and developers should/are aware of that.
Now trying to say because it was stated to be a free mod and now is releasing and people excited for the mod should have felt like they had any right to play that mod are simply “falsely entitled” is bullshit.
The developers of this mod spread around the idea of it being free. This in turn got people who normally wouldn’t have been interested if it had a price tag interested. It hooked them to the game under a false pretense, whether this was on purpose or coincidence is debatable but one thing that isn’t is as the consumer I am entitled and have the right to say fuck off at this tactic.
Now I am not saying that this is or was intentional and I am not saying that I feel good or bad about this news. However I am saying that gamers, movie goers, book readers, car owners and so forth ARE ENTITLED.
As far as the actual news is concerned I don’t really care. I haven’t gotten around to playing the original mod which the installer has been sitting in my downloads and thus don’t care about its commercial re-release.
if they announced this decision a few months earlier I’d understand, apparently valve granted them commercial use of Source in 2010
I would just like to draw everyones attention to this post Robert made in his Devblog back in June 2010:
A Light at the end of the Tunnel
By Robert, on June 30th, 2010
The thing is that he could have done that whenever he wanted without telling anyone and people still don’t have legitimate reasons to complain outside of personal frustration.
Wow, two potentially great non-Valve Source games this year (the other being E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy). Granted, the Dear Esther remake is probably worth 10 bucks at the absolute max to me, but I suspect that’s all it will cost anyway.
He certainly has poured a lot of time and effort into this.
This is not the month long mod you see a dime a dozen of on moddb.
but I can see why paying for this might be a bit silly. I didn’t enjoy the orginal game and this is as a consequence to me just a graphics demo.
This is the kind of game that really makes me think, how can someone be so talented, as to make the source engine look straight out beautiful (For the sources’ standards, of course).
This game leaves me in totaly awe.
If the games comes out for less than 15 dollars (which it will) i’m getting it.
This should really make people think twice if their computer can run the Source engine(;
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
