Dear Esther Graphics update

The Source engine is more advanced than any engine known, the man who worked with Bill Gates 13 years could make HL the most attractive game experience ever :freeman: He won with HL the title game of the year with every game released from HL series  and black mesa will be the second game of the year after original HL

I’m not a fan of it… I’ll elaborate if someone asks.

Checkout the mod “Raindrop” or that one about that Swedish town… There are a lot of good ones out there that would probably wow you.

I won’t dispute this; but, there aren’t any good games out on Cryengine. :hmph:

lol

Er…where the hell were you in 2004? Graphics were almost THE main selling point of Half-Life 2, besides it being the sequel to Half-Life. It had the most cutting-edge, beautiful graphics ever seen back then, not to mention it was just as scaleable then as it is now.

also you can pick shit up and it moves around kind of a bit like in real life. this was literally a big deal a few years ago lol

pick up this fucking battery. haha . look at my world of huge see saws. so realistic. holy shit

remember when u have to pick up the can. was youre fucknig mind blown or what

Though there are better games running on the Source engine I thought Crysis and Warhead were great.

Please stop double-posting and triple posting. I know you know how to use the edit button.

My point is not that it is as advanced as cryengine, but that it looks as good if not better than cryengine.

He won’t stop.

And no, it doesn’t. It looks good, but not as good as Cryengine 2.

[techdemoargument] They were nothing but tech demos. [/techdemoargument]

Honestly though, the only part I really liked was when you go in the alien hibernation pod/ship/mountain. That was unique and original. The rest was very, very bland. I played it for the environment, not the story.

However I played the episodes for story AND environment; sure they didn’t have dynamic gibbing or realtime volumetric effects, but the story was GREAT and they didn’t look half bad either. Mind you, these games are OLDER than the Crysis series.

EDIT: And you’re right, garth. Advanced =/= looking good.

Kind of off-topic:

This video is from the HL2 E3 showing.

It’s funny; facial animation technology from 2004 (albeit slightly upgraded,) is still topnotch in 2010.

source engine is not good
its old
really old
the developer himself said that he would be using a different engine if he hadn’t started with source, and has to make constant hacks and shortcuts to get shit working on it. possibly very GPU intensive shit
why is source popular?
it’s easily accessible

IN COMPARISON to the NEWER TOP ENGINES (Unreal, Cryengine, Avalanche.), Source is outdated.

It doesn’t LOOK BAD though, and it being EASILY ACCESSIBLE allows things often OUT OF THE SCOPE OF CONVENTIONAL DEVELOPMENT to be DONE.

(lol random caps)

u mad
why tho
it’s not your engine is it

I’m (somewhat. :stuck_out_tongue: ) not arguing about the engine. (Reread post before last,) I’m arguing about the quality of content ON the engine.

O’rly?

Don’t get me wrong, this mod looks great but saying it looks better than Cryengine is a bit of a stretch.

Source is the most versatile engine ever made. It’s managed not to become obsolete in 7 years (counting dev-time) without a COMPLETE overhaul. Sure, compared to it’s original, it has been completely overhauled, but it was done in small steps, and is still manageable for most computers.

@CatsEyes: Myst is a good game, Riven is good too. Totally go find somewhere to get it. The masterpiece edition is really cheap and totally worth it.

Oh yeah, THAT UPDATE LOOKS AWESOME! I think it might not loose some of it’s… feeling if it looks that awesome when they re-release it.

(Regarding that crysis mod you linked to (guy above me), looks nice, but they WAY overdid the depth of field. I hate it when games get ported over from consoles and PC’s that can handle high detail at high distances get stuck with that limiter [disguised as ‘realism’], so I prefer to turn it off. If that portion of that mod is toggle-able, I might consider it.)

I still think GldSrc can be more fun, because it’s even MORE accessible than Source. Hell, look at the HUNDREDS of mods for HL1, then look at the. . . maybe dozen mods out for HL2.

If/when Valve comes out with a new engine, they basically may as well not include an SDK, since I can’t imagine there will ever be more than like 1 or 2 user-made mods that will ever make it to completion.

Also, caustic effects aren’t that big a deal. Deus Ex had caustic effects.

This.

Notice; instead of released another engine like others, Valve only changes the build. We’re technically still using, “Source 1” from 2004, but it’s at “Source Engine Build 4216.”

You got a source to back up this claim of yours???

Um, besides the fact that it’s true? We’re on the same engine, just with numerous updates.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
