no, its not that bad. it IS kind of awkward at first but after you play it for awhile you will get used to it. it is a great game in my opinion.

First time I played Stalker in 2007, Lab X18 was one of the times I was genuinely scared playing a game. I think it was the superb graphics (of its time), the creepiness of the underground environment, the ambient sounds, and the OH GOD WHY ARE THERE CRATES FLYING AT ME, first encounter with a snork, pseudogiant stomping around in the dark, and that goddamn door with the banging behind it. X16 was pretty creepy too, but not as pantshitting as X18 the first time you play it.

X16 was just annoying, the zombies just stood shooting, giving you a false sense of security and making you forget that they are equally accurate as normal humans.
On the subject of Zone creepiness, that laboratory underneath the Iron Forest in Call of Pripyat truly freaked me out. Oh god that crying baby, why did I open the door?!
Actually, on that note how scary is Dead Space? I know horror is really based upon opinion but I do kind of want to be scared by a game again.
I would say Dead Space is among the scarier games I’ve ever played.
