DayZ Standalone - Hold on to your cans

For the life of me, I thought we had an official thread on DayZ. Maybe it was before the forum reset.

Anyway, who here bought this game? I find it much better than the mod in its early alpha state and I even have fun just walking around looking for stuff.

Just this morning I was playing with Jack Freeman and samzala, trying to finding each other. I and Jack eventually found each other. We were both fucked up and seeing the world in monochrome, trying to find something sharp to open our cans of food. At some point my character succumbed to starvation and could only crawl around, so we decided it was better to kill ourselves. So we did.

When we respawned somewhere else, the first thing we found was a can opener.

That’s DayZ for ya.

I bought it not twenty minutes post-release…

Currently near Stary Sobor (That’s like the middle of Chernarus, if you didn’t ever get to know it properly), I’ve like everything a man could wish for. Dressed in military grade clothes with an M4A1 with loads of ammo and scope/bipod/bayonet… I look like a god’amn SEAL.

You can open cans with screwdrivers/axes btw - at the cost of loosing some of the content. No need to say you won’t give a damn about loosing half the can if the other option is starving to death.

Yesterday I met an unarmed guy at NWAF, wiggling side-to-side in indication “I really don’t wanna kill ya” - with a slightly FUBAR vision, I put my M4 up, his moves somewhat remembling a zombie facing AWAY, just as much as a human facing me. Well, the moment he moved, I knew he’s not infected. Yet. So I lowered my M4, but he was gone by the time I got to his position. Well, I yelled my findings over voice chat, told him I’m sorry and wished him good luck.

Btw, finding worthy stuff isn’t that much of a problem for me anymore, provided I don’t bump into an already-looted village. And I don’t cheat with DayZ-database or whatever else. Guess it’s just luck, and a sixth sense of sorts.

I own SA, but after an hour of Zeds just walking through doors and walls, I decided to wait until they actually fix the Zed AI/pathing.

So has that been fixed yet, or do they still have ghostly properties?

I think they did but still might be not completely fixed.

edit: I only use the Dayz DB map to locate myself when playing with other people, as it’s no fun to try and find each other without a clue of where you are.

Sorry for doubleposting but I confirm they haven’t fixed the teleporting bug. Just had a character die because of that.

Anyone in Cherno ?

Haven’t got there yet.

I lol’d

Quark is Jack Freeman

Maxey you’re such a courtesan

Hrggggg at first Standalone looked too buggy to be worth buying this early, and I did kind of hate the original’s clunky movement/inventory etc, but after all of the hype since release… :zip:

It’s quite alpha.

It’s a fucking awesome Alpha that is ten times better than ArmA 3 in it’s “released title” state… And Rocket claims the game is a pure sucker not worth your money in this state? Oh boy, I want to see what he considers a masterpiece SO DAMN MUCH!

And I think I actually prefer the game without vehicles.

Managed to meet up with some guys I know from RO2, and we went around Berezino helping others with 8 people. When we were saying our goodbyes to the people, sadly we had to involve a “not everybody’s as nice as we are” sort of sentence along with “good luck”…

Just had an… ENCOUNTER…

My group of about five people bumped into some other bunch at Berezino construction site. Two of us, far north, ran to support our guys down south.

When I finally got there, I managed to observe for a prolonged period of time, even being a true Shadow (my first kill walked right past me… Poor sod didn’t know what hit him!) - after reporting in “One enemy KIA”, I repositioned aiming at the rooftop (The enemy bunch was holed up on the roof, idiots…) - I managed to pull off a pot shot at one of their heads - I thought I saw the guy drop down, but couldn’t confirm (The guy’s head was small enough in my ACOG as it was… On a hundred meters…) - well, I found a corpse on that very spot ten minutes later, so I guess it was a kill - I reported “Probable enemy WIA” anyway. I went on flanking for a bit, taking some potshots… Let’s just say that my ArmA-trained combat sense got me out of that without really giving them a chance to hit. Closing in from the west on the construction site, I went in close and detected no activity. Disengaging, I moved west, only to find out two hostiles enter the building. I moved back in position, took up a stable firing position, went in with a recce report along with blasting another guys’ brain all over the rooftop in the process with the assistance of my buddy down south. I went in to clear, but the other guy either disengaged quick or combat logged. It ended up with us being “pinned” in the building and two of our guys dieing with two or three more still out the building. The two survivors inside, well… My mate combat logged it. I went on with the more badass style and disengaged on foot, hangman’s noose around our neck (well, escape routes) or not.

In the end, the score was 8+ enemy KIAs (number probably goes up to 10…), 2-3 friendly KIAs, no WIAs. And I had one kill confirmed, one probable and one assisted under my belt. Fucking awesome engagement. Poor sods never stood a chance! HOOYAH!

Can’t we all just be friends? World has gone to shit and all we do is kill what’s left of ourselves.

Woah, woah, don’t go all bad on me.

I had another encounter an hour before on Krasnostav airfield. Me with my full military kit, including full ballistic protection againist a guy with an axe, and the only interaction was along the lines of “Hey, got a spare 9V battery?” “No.” “Well, thanks anyway, good bye, good luck”.

But when you go weapons green on my buddies, you best start hoping I’m not creeping around. It’s deep down in my mind. Threat to self, friendly or innocent = destroy by any means available.

That was actually right after a server restart, so Krasno AF was FULL of loot. I just let the guy have ALL of it by bugging out.

And I’m talking about the same group that helped two guys start on their journeys two days before.

I was talking generally.

Thankfully I can say that most of my interactions were peaceful, unless I felt threatened (Yeah, well… I DID feel threatened when that guy popped up with an M4 raised in CQB, even if I was the first to open up…)

I even remember giving a guy my firefighter axe after saving him from a zombie on my second life. The only other weapon I had at that point was a Mosin… without any ammunition (Didn’t find any other firearm, or any type of ammunition until like… My fourth life or something). Needless to say being a “Good guy Serza” came back to bite me in the ass the moment I met a Zed. Still totally worth it.

When my two other mates just randomly cuffed up a stranger, I was trying to tame down the two fuckers to let him off alive… and well. Thankfully they just felt funny.

When I meet another survivor, I mostly try to pry out what they know about the area and whether or not they were looting significantly/whether they found anything of interest. Of course I offer the same in return, if there is anything.

They should add a mode where the objective is to rid Chernarus of all the zombies and shooting at other players is discouraged by disconnecting and banning you temporarily from the server. When a session begins there is a set number of zombies all spread around the map with a counter on the screen and the session won’t end until all zombies are killed. As soon as the last zombie is killed, the session ends, the server resets and a new session begins.

In this mode there would be more zombies and loot than usual and requires a fresh new character that can’t be used in another server to avoid abuse.

This mode should be called Dead Falling.

I tried to get the mod version of DayZ up and running this last weekend, because I bought ArmaII and OA for peanuts in a sale ages ago intending to try out DayZ at some point.

Could not get the fucking thing working. I may spring for the standalone at some point if it gets below ten bucks.
