COD IN SPAAACE

A lot of people tend to stick to the 2 opposites, those opposites being “It’s good” and “It’s bad”, they think black and white, but not gray.

We’ve seen this happening a lot on this forum in all sorts of varying discussions. And to go further with your example:

Black: Avatar was great
White: Avatar was shit
Gray: Avatar was entertaining movie that offered some great CGI and cinematography, but it was poorly written and directed and the actors weren’t pulling their weight enough.

That gray bit is often discarded when discussing things.

Avatar was great. Any reason to bash it (simple story, whatnot) is an intended part of the film. It’s supposed to be honest, straightforward, and easy to grasp - - a movie that knows it’s just a movie and not an eleven-hundred page Middle Earth epic… albeit, just a movie pushing every SFX boundary. Let’s face it, the movie was beautiful no matter how many ethiopians they starved in order to fund it.

My point is, sometimes black and white are necessary to establish enough contrast to be interesting. Topics like Avatar, where you can praise it or find some half-assed excuse to dismiss it, don’t need gray. If we all just said “coulda been better” to every little topic, there’s no point in holding any opinions… and a man without an opinion is a man without a mind.

And speaking of half-assed excuses to dismiss something, a friend with whom I saw the movie with complained about the 3D, being “gimmicky” (like the Wii’s controller), and stated he didn’t trust his senses being “fooled” into thinking there was depth…! My god, another comrade and I tried so hard to convince him that motion pictures in general are fooling him into thinking static images are moving… It IS 3D if you perceive it with your binocular vision…

Fun Fact: You know you are a total fanboy if you ever say that a flaw is intended as part of anything (“The library was made to make you had the character and as such is a brilliant level”)

I mean, do you realize how stupid you sound?

Avatar: 3D is neat, plot is bad. That’s the entire story.

I sound stupid by drawing attention to the fact you call something intentional a flaw? A story can be a flaw?

Unlike you, I refrain from opening with an insult. But also unlike you, I know the difference between someone who cannot adapt (someone too picky like yourself) and someone who can provide objective criticism.

Tough nuts if you didn’t like the tale, that’s your particular preference. But you should narrow the band of your flaw-finder in the future.

Yes, a story can be a flaw, or a sucking stomach wound, which is what Avatar’s story is.

The story was a bit elementary and predictable. Actually, very much so.

But at least it was something everyone could grasp. There were six year old children who understood the message that we should respect nature and other people, no matter how different they are. In a way, I’m thinking the message was intended for younger folk.

Regardless, it was nice for once to be able to admire the action and special effects on screen without worrying that I might have missed an important plot element.

You said every flaw was intentional. This is an illogical statement, implying a perfect understanding of public opinion so that the creator can make the flaws, and shows a desperate attempt to preserve your fanboyish view of its perfection. Also, a simplistic story is okay, but Avatar is one of the stupidly simple, black and white, idiotically cloying stories I have ever seen, and obviously pretty much the worst.

Wait, is this thread about space fish or blue people?

I agree with Ibanez. Too few martian terrorists :hmph:

I loved Avatar, but I would just like to point out something:
“Savage tribes without technology and money can be just as fucking brutal to eachother as we can.”
From RedLetterMedia’s awesome review of the film:

I don’t like Avatar, the story sucks. I mean the visuals are good but it means nothing if the story is bad.

Of course the story sucked, but it was a good popcorn movie and it’s great to see it with a friend or two.

We seem to have come to a consensus that the story sucked and the only people who liked it are graphics whores (Tiki doesn’t count, because he has proved himself to be too much of a fanboy).

So, fish in space. Sounds like fun.

Oh the irony.

Anyway, yeah, fish in space. I like it.

Technically, I said it was a good movie… :frowning:

Therefore…

Movie graphics whores ≠ Video game graphics whores.

yer they do

I can’t see the difference. How is wanking to special effects different than wanking to video game graphics? Crysis had no depth, it’s only remarkable feature was its crippling effect on my, until then, monster system.

They open ended gameplay was heaps of fun. If you got bored it was just because you had no imagination!
