I was looking at something around the value of 15-20$ (excluding shipping costs), but anyone is free to spend more or less on it if they desire so.
To make the matter of choosing easier, we could ask people to give some general indicative preferences when they sign up. With this I don’t mean specific names or items, but just something along the lines of “I like to read fantasy books” or “I love plushies”. Just something to make it easier for someone to pick a gift for you (though the person that is supposed to get you a gift is still free to ignore your preferences).
Also, whoever signs up for this needs to realize fully well that this is a semi-serious project. This is about anonymously giving and receiving gifts, not about sending disgusting or inappropriate gifts, so if you’re thinking about sending someone a bottled turd, please fuck off.
Anyway, here’s a little FAQ of the things I can think of right now.

It’s about anonymously sending and receiving gifts to/from a random person in this community.
What’s in it for me?
Well… In addition to feeling warm and fuzzy inside, you’ll also receive a gift. Can’t promise you’ll like the gift, but receiving gifts is always fun, regardless of content.
How do I sign up?
I’ll get details ironed out soon-ish, but expect something like a thread where people post their current location (city + country), preference and whether they mind paying for international shipping (some people would be forced to if they sign up, as I’m sure there’s only one person here from Malaysia, for example).
Who do I buy a gift for?
Once people have signed up, I’ll gather them all up and randomly assign someone to each and every one of you.
Do I need to tell the person I’m buying for?
I can’t stop you from telling the person you’re buying for, but you’re supposed to be a “secret” Santa, not much secrecy when you’re announcing the fact that you’re Santa (think of the children!).
I hate the person I’m supposed to buy for, can I switch or not buy anything?
Christmas is a time for love and forgiveness. Put down the weapons and give something anyway. Once a name has been given to you, you’ll buy for that person, regardless of mutual hatred. No switching
What gifts are eligible to give?
Anything really, as long as it’s gift-y. Obviously no inappropriate or disgusting things, nothing with the sole intent of pissing someone of. But books, DVDs, CDs, plushies, games (both conventional and digital), gift cards for Steam or iTunes or anything similar, handcrafted items, toys, clothing, silly-stuff, etc…
Do I -have- to send a physical gift?
Not really, but it adds to the whole experience if there’s a giftwrapped box (or just a box). So you’re free to send a digital gift if physical gifts are not feasible for you, but try to avoid it when possible.
How much should I spend on the gift?
Probably something along the target value of 15-20$, shipping excluded.
I’m poor but can make something fancy through fine craftsmanship, is that OK?
Of course. Handmade gifts are always awesome.

Sure, I’ll try to keep that in mind when coupling people, but I can’t promise anything (if everybody refuses to send internationally, what would happen to that Malaysian boy, eh?).

I’m thinking about just giving something to someone, but not put myself up to receive anything (as I don’t think it’s fair to anyone if I picked my secret Santa myself). Feel free to send me a Christmas card though (as if that would happen ;_; )

Up to you, really. I personally wouldn’t wait, but like I said, you’re free in that regard.
