I think Half-Life is more of a tense experience more than a scary one. Aquila is right here, that being in the murky depths with an angry Icthyosaurus is one of the most buttock-clenching moments.
First time I played half life was when I was 3. Damn, I got through the anonimous materials alright, when unforcene came, man, i’ve never have ever comprehended blood, killing and monsters and at 3 terrified me so badly I didn’t even finish the second chapter. Now I can play half lif without being too scared. Half life 2 wasn’t scary at all, in fact It was sort of funny!
My first runthrough of HL was every morning at like 3AM, sleep deprived, and the first half of the game was magnificently creepy. Freaked me out so much, and got me completely addicted to the game.
and how old are you now? eight?
Fourteen, by my calculation.
Also, I agree with Aquila and UrBY, I think the ichy’s were by far the only really scary part of the game for me. I avoid fighting them whenever I can.
EDIT: Actually, I’m not sure how old he is. I thought he said that he was three when it came out, not when he first played it.
Judging by his typing skills, I’ll throw out a wager of four.
I sorta skimmed through the comments, so I hope I didn’t miss this being posted, but I read in a behind the scenes sort of article that Half Life 1 was actually pursued as sort of a sci-fi horror type of first person shooter. Obviously, it didn’t turn out quite that way, but I am more than interested in seeing this game taken from a somewhat darker perspective. However, I wouldn’t want to see anything truly changed along the lines of story, nor would I want it to too greatly contrast from the sequel.
Regardless of whether it’s darker or not, I’m pretty psyched for the game because I know it’s going to be good.
Haha.
I am 14. I was playing the demo whenever I played when I was 3.
I thought that half-life is a 15 rated game… And I assume Black Mesa is too.
“I got through the anonimous materials alright, when unforcene came, man…”
You certainly need to go to school, then.
LOL
I fail to see the significance of that picture to the conversation.
How unfortunate for you.
Actually, you do seem to have posted a little out of context FYI.
…except now it IS relevant so, carry on I guess.
Shall we return to the topic?
I had not played half life 1 until the other week, but seeing this mod looked so good I thought I ought to play the original just so as to fully appreciate the game generally and what is to be achieved here with the black mesa mod.
I definatley would like more scarier momments, half life 2 is way darker and I would hope Black mesa takes a lead from this so as to provide continuity for the remade prequel to half life 2.
A bit that keeps popping into my brain from playing HL1 (still fresh) is where you activate the reactor in the lambda core and your dodging all these bright yellow electric shocks you leg it and make it out and the way on through the level is via an elevator… now what an opportunity was missed in this piece of the level…I was scared of it even though nothing happened… you just climb a dumb ladder that is set on the back wall and drop onto a ledge higher up. No Headcrabs when you pop your head up there into the elevator shaft, no dropping of the lift halfway like a malfunction anything would have been better than what was given at such a good point in the game with so many great set pieces.
But the scariest bit for me was definatley headcrabs jumping at me on the big cargo lift on the way down to in unforseen consequences and hope this stays in
And yes, it will be scary
Scary? Let’s see…
-crashing plates somewhere behind your back every few minutes
-lots of enemies teleporting in when you enter a room / push a button / pick up an item
-even more enemies teleporting in (or appearing from nowhere) after you cleaned an area completely
-power failures all the time so that you stand in complete darkness every few minutes. Remember to teleport some enemies in when that happens.
-mutilated corpses and skeletons everywhere. some of them burn, others become alive if you get near them - and some do both
-strange noises talking to you, evil laughter. maybe shortly after that some enemies could teleport in
-blood smearings on the walls: “they’re coming for us” or “hell is waiting for you” and so on
-strange pulsating (xen?) goo eating through the walls of the facility in the later levels, freaking your eyes out because it looks like it’s growing (texture animation), but it doesn’t (really scary!)
…
I think that should do it :retard:
Shit, YESSS!!!
