Black Mesa - Will it be scary?

Ravenholm. On fifth playthrough. On hard. Fast zombies. Didn’t know they could bust through the skylight where you wait for the elevator. Bricks were shat so hard I still have the stretch marks on my anus to prove it.

I think half life was more exhilerating than scary but it did have its moments that made me jump, mainly the assasins bit when one appeared behind me out of nowhere, H8 frights lol. Also howd you not find Ravenholm in Half life 2 scary? I hate that chapter, turning aroudn to find that buttugly fast zombie speeding up to your make you just want to run and not look back lol??

The assassin’s terrified me to no end on hard. Back to the wall, nervously spinning around and shooting at shadows. I would always get shot in the back, and I’d run away behind a barrel while blindly shooting where the assassin was.

It made it worse that the first time I encountered them, I had like 20 HP left.

Head crabs in the jumped up and it my head on the ceiling after that, also the poison zombies scared my brother he went gurr when he saw one.

Ravenholm. Nth playthrough. Black headcrabs. 1:1 Scale model of great wall of china constructed.

o i c wut u did thar

ravenholm scares the bajeezus out of me… once i played with a all lights on cheat or something like that… bright as daylight and still freaked me out a little

There was two parts in HL1 that scared me, the zombie having a seizure by a desk at the beginning and head craps coming out of no where, try having that when your only 5. Ravenholm scared me the first time I played it but after that its more like oh crap the gutterpipes are banging moments.

Ravenholm is scary as hell…

I consider HL2 to be very frightening… not really because of the OMG ZOMBIE heartattack moments… Nobody here will deny that HL2 is set in a deep world, visually and in its story. there’s a certain chill to it… The best way i can think of to explain it is that it was the same feeling i got when i read 1984.

BM certainly has the potential to be scary… IDK what I would be hoping for… I dont want the scares to be zombies being hidden around corners and stuff (though i expect plenty :stuck_out_tongue: ), I don’t want the scares to be all silent-hill/doom/F.E.A.R. ish… though there is a lot to learn about shear horror from those imo. HL2 didn’t use anything that had ever been employed to give it its ‘feel’… it was realistic (not in that an alien invasion can be REALISTIC, but in that it is a world with a history, human emotions, etc) and i kinda hope BM can recapture this, though it’d be difficult :3

First time I played Half Life, it freaked the hell out of me - but that was back when I was 7 or 8 years old, and I was easily scared back then. I’m 18 now and I got balls of steel to the point that Penumbra didn’t even make much of an impact on me, so I doubt that this game will scare me…

Survived the forum crash of '09, but just awoke from the coma.

When I first got my hands on HL1, I was 27, and I played for five hours straight. :jizz: I went to bed at half-past-four in the morning on a Wednesday, and I had to work the next day. I had never played a game that drew me in so much.

That spazzing zombie creeped me out (hairs on the back of my neck and all) and once I got over that, there was a strange satisfaction to jumping into the room and smacking the hell out of it.

The houndeyes encounter right after that was more tense, because they moved so fast. I wanted to move ahead so badly, that I didn’t see how to get the scientist to open the armory until I started over.

One word: bullsquids
Two words: charging bullsquids
Three words: charging, spitting bullsquids
They freaked my sh!t. :fffuuu:

The tentacles in Blast Pit only worried me a bit. Watching Barney get gibbed was an effective warning; don’t get too close and don’t make too much noise. After all, they were seen in just about every demo/trailer/promo that came out that year.

Head-humpers and ducts/pipes… always a startling combination. Of course, now we’ve come to expect it.

The first encounter with an Alien Grunt was probably the most tense moment in the game. The room is eerily lit by the glow of the specimen chamber, and while the Grunt seems to be trapped… not for long! :fffuuu:

However, there’s one moment in HL1 that frightened me to the point of, “that’s it, I’m gonna die, there’s no way to get past this.” That moment was the Garg in Forget About Freeman. If you enter the parking garage right as the script starts, you’ll attract the attention of two soldiers, but they are promptly flattened by an SUV… because a Gargantua nudged it… ten feet. :zip:

And then it sees you…

The very first time (yah, I died) I was fascinated and paralyzed by it… (maybe it’s friendly? :retard: ) then it spat those bio-incendiary claws at me and- (bee-ee-ee-ee-ee…) :’(

Next time, I ran like hell and found how to survive my way into the Lambda Complex. :freeman:

Love that game, and I still re-play it to this day. Even the “source” edition. (oooh… shimmery water!)

If the BM team can pull it off, I’d love to experience some of those feelings again. Especially now that I know what to expect from HL1. Shiny? Definitely… but does it “take me there” in the same way HL1 did, and that was the blocky GoldSrc era!

Make me jump, guys.

Release Black Mesa!

I remember back in the day when I first played HL opposing force Demo in 1999 ,the thing that really scared me is the “Soldier Zombie” when he awakes up and kill the scientist and then he comes after you ,u know the rest of it…

in HL2 everyone knows Ravenholm so I don’t have to explain :stuck_out_tongue:

You’re old.

When i was 13 i watched my brother, while playing HL the first time.

He was in the room where 2 Itchy’s are in the water. We saw them swimming in the water and he moved so slowly over the floor. It was late evening and our room was dark. Scared of the sounds they made and a beginner in moving with WASD-Controls, My brother was full concentrated, to not fall into the water …

Then my father yelled suddenly into the room “WANT A BEER!!!” … my brother got shocked, hit the right mouse button, throws an AR Grenade, Loud explosion at 100% Volume, The Floor got broken, 2 HP left , A vort spawned behind us and killed him while swimming in panik on the top of the water with a annoying “BUZZ” :fffuuu:

For me HL was scary and i hope BM will it be also.

what a mess ur father made lol

Amen to that.

Boo.

For me it wasn’t so scary. I got “vigilant”, as the father told me to be, but that was all. No Real Shock-situation. On the other hand: I’m watching Horror and Splatter movies…

But You might be a lot younger then me

Haha! Look on the bright side, you got a funny story out of it, plus beer. Sounds like a cool Dad.

My Dad once knocked on my bedroom door while I was cybering with a girl (in before ‘how did you know she was a girl,’ - haha, I’ve met her in real life guys). I was kind of pissed off at the interruption but it turned out he was offering me a beer so I had to be philosophical and forgive him. Dads are awesome.

If anything at all will scare me in this game, it’ll be the ichys.

Blarrrrgh.
