That depends…are you afraid of alien genitals?
Half Life 2 Ravenholm
Half Life 2 Ep1 the underground parking lot.
Half Life 2 Ep2 err, theres none i can think off.
I dont remember any scary parts in HL1, i dont even remember HL1 nomore. :’(
EDIT: Huh, wrong topic.
Well certain scenes in Half-Life and Half-Life 2 where creepy like when you where on a rail you would hear people screaming. And the zombie at the beginning of the game having a seizure. And Ravenholm was quite creepy as well.
Well, I’m sure the seizure zombie near the beginning of the actual game(I mean the part where the action begins) will be a bit creepy but no it won’t be scary. Unless Half Life was scary, which is not the case(not in my opinion at least)
Ew, mayonnaise.
No more than i am of buttholes everywhere.
For me, HL1 created feelings of tension, hopelessness, desperation. It had some frightening scenes as well (ie. the test chamber, tentacle in blast pit, headcrab placement, zombie placement.) I hope we have recreated the same ambient feeling and scary moments. They may be too tame to scare a lot of gamers these days, but I still consider HL1 a great psychological thriller.
The tentacle freaked me out as a kid.
Half Life never scared me. I doubt Black Mesa will scare me. If you want a good scare, play the Fear series and Dead Space.
I think it would be pretty spooky if the Seizure Zombie made monsterized versions of vocalizations that someone experiencing a seizure might make.
I don’t recall any game that ever scared me, except DOOM³ and that was simply because it was always dark and your flashlight would give out. HL2 and the episodes had a few moments where all of the sudden a headcrab would jump at me and startle me, but I never found it scary.
Mind you, that’s not a bad thing per se, the Half-Life games have always been more like good science fiction to me.
The Ichthyosaur scared the shit of a friend of mine, he had made it to the dam and was swimming in the water. Barely noticed the fellow before it reached him, he literally jumped out of seat saying “Holy shit!” followed shortly by “I hate you” directed at me
Ah, the good old days of water you couldn’t see through from above the surface.
Ravenholme was pretty scary IMO. Or maybe just because I’m a pussy
The first time you play a game is usually a bit scarier because you don’t know what’ll happen. But when you play it for the umpteenth time you don’t get scared…you get even!
Ravenholm… twitch
HL1 wasn’t that scary though, imo.
Black Mesa will definitely be more immersive than Half-Life was, so there’s a good chance that any potentially scary parts of Half-Life will have proportionately more chance of being scary in Black Mesa.
Half-Life didn’t really have dark areas… the lighting was fairly plain everywhere and low-contrast. Lighting plays a big part in drawing the player into a certain state of mind. Dark areas are perceived to be more scary because it’s harder to see what’s there, just like real life… also certain lighting styles can have a psychological effect, making us feel warm or cold, tense or relaxed.
As in Point Insertion’s crazy lights hallway, right?
Embarrassingly, I have to admit that the first time I played Half-Life I was scared to death by it. Granted, that was a long time ago.
I don’t think BM will have quite the same effect. I’m sure it will be much more intense than the original though.
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
