Black Mesa - Will it be scary?

Been there, done that.

I like to think I’m a video game bad-ass, but who am I kidding… When I first played Doom3, I remember seeing the mirror and thinking “Cool, you can see your- AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!” After that, I refused to go near any more mirrors in that game. Hell, even Dear Ester gave me the willies at the end :aah:

So yeah, I want BM to be scary like HL1, not like Doom3 or Silent Hill (I’m sure I have nothing to worry about).

Certain scary parts, such as the RC or your first Vort.

i didnt like the vorts either… until i found out it takes like four hits with a pistol to kill them… OR one shot gun blast

Black Mesa is now being co-developed by Nickelodeon:

:awesome:

well the Ichthyosaur is really scarry especialy when you surface for air and can’t see where that damm thing is … (thank god that the pistol works under water) :freeman:

But beside the headcrab jumping out of nowhere I think that the bullsquid is really scarry at short range … when it charges towards me I’m always like … stay away , stay away, stay away :fffuuu: (firing the shotgun at it )

my bro almost craped his pants on that flooded office part? the vent, with the headcrabs on it ^^

I bet you don’t even have a brother.

I bet YOU don’t even have a brother.

Dunno, but my first-sight of half-life 1 is frightening.
After beaten more than 10 times, the feeling was change to be ‘how to hack the game’.
But I can’t predict my feeling about this mod…

That damn Ichthyosaur…
every time I play Half-Life, I still get really nervous when I’m near one of them.
Every time, I kill them only when I’m on a dry surface. And when I fall into the water…

Yeah, I would say the Ichthyosaur only causes some anxiety because he swims a LOT better than you can, and has claws. Likewise, headcrabs cause some good “Jump back from the monitor” moments, but not true fear. Doom 3 did it pretty well, where you have the fear of the unknown - noises and shadows, then BAM! Imp in your face.

As far as the Half Life series goes, I think HL2 and the episodes did a pretty decent job in certain areas. Ravenholm definitely gave you a sense of desolation, and a bit of fear due to darkness/fast zombies. But the episodes (I can’t remember which episode had which sequence) had some good scenarios where you’re in a dark parking garage full of zombies with only flares and exploding barrels lighting the scene periodically.

As for BM: S / HL1, I remember Xen used to scare me a little bit - big factory with odd noises, Garg, walking testicle, etc. The assassins caused some anxiety due to their agility. Otherwise I can’t think of much in the game that actually caused “fear”. Lightbulb - the introduction to A.Grunts in (Questionable Ethics?) where you’re weaponless and it busts out of the viewing chamber - that inspired some fear (the first and second time it happened).

Short of that, I think the realism of the models (especially the A.Grunt and Controllers) will help with the fear effect. Guess that remains to be seen

No, it’s not a horror mod, it’s a mod to recreate half-life! :lambda:

Personally, I can’t understand how some of you people get scared from a video game lol. I can completely understand getting startled, frightened, or shocked from a game…but to go as far as saying scared? Video games are real time graphics…its all fucking fake lol. Its a little difficult to be scared of that, IMO.

Than again, the only piece of media/entertainment to ever truly scare me was the first time I saw Alien as a kid…definitely had some nightmares that night.

you must be HARDCORE[/SIZE]

Nope, I never really said that. I am just curious as to how people are scared from video games…is that ok with you?

Maybe I should state that, IMO, being scared means that after you turn off the game/movie/tv show, you are still frightened.

No, that’s the feeling of being “creeped out.”

it will be awsome,a bit scary and challenging :expressionless:

finally

The Half-Life series had its scary moments but they were never meant to be creepy games per se.
