So anywhere on the spectrum, basically…

…Is ULTRA BLOOM TIME a game…?

You’ve seriously never played UBT?

When I look at the screenshots of the various levels, I notice that yes, there are some areas that are very dark, but also some that are quite bright. It would seem that the developers chose to light the maps based firstly on what would be realistic in a top secret government facility, but as Raminator has pointed out, it’s the gameplay that is ultimately most important, so they are more than willing to sacrifice realism to make the game more fun and dynamic for the player.

I still don’t see what’s so unrealistic about the lighting.

Is that the sequel to Mirror’s Edge?

Yeah, I agree, the lighting from what I’ve seen seems very realistic.

Yeah, for a facility normally, no, it’s unrealistic mostly.
For a facility over-run by hostile aliens and highly destructive military forces, it’s perfect.

Off topic : Is Mirrors Edge a source engine game? It has a similar look to it. Just more bloomy as stated my Mr. Someguy

It is not.

“Mirror’s Edge is powered by the Unreal Engine 3 with the addition of a new lighting solution, developed by Illuminate Labs in association with DICE.”

lol, Mirrors Edge was not that bright. I applaud the comedy though.

also Valve overdid the HDR/Bloom in the Lost Coast demo just to highlight the tech. My eyes certainly don’t spend that much time adjusting when I move from a dark place to a bright place or vice versa.

Also useless as the monitors most gamers have are Low Dynamic Range usually. You are basically just selecting a fixed exposure or animating it.

Most games from 2004/2005 overused HDR, I guess they were really excited about this new tech :expressionless:

It’s the Lens Flare syndrome. Everytime a new graphical gimmick comes out, the first games with it will overuse it.

Bloom =/= HDR.

There were very few games to actually use HDR until just the past couple of years. Even now a lot of games don’t actually have HDR, just a trick with bloom and brightness.

Wasn’t Farcry one of the first games to have HDR? They did it with a patch.

Yes, it could be turned on in the console. The effect doesn’t work correctly, though. It just looks like bloom.

So which gimmick will BM overuse?

Tarp crates :stuck_out_tongue:

What’s the difference?

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
