Barney Calhoun, or is it?

OK, I’m assuming you ALL know that Barney was the security guard you see in the beginning with the flashlight, right? And the people who played Blue Shift know that you haven’t met Gordon at all in the game. Sooo… who was the security guard that told Gordon “Hey, catch me later and I’ll buy you a beer” who claims to be Barney in HL2? Plot Hole Ahoy!

Considering that Gearbox made Blue Shift, the entire events aren’t considered Canon.

Don’t think about it that much. Otherwise you’ll realize that barney calhoun either has over 9000 twins or BM is a secret cloning facility. BS isn’t necessarily canon, plus Valve was probably just making a reference to a phrase that all of the security guards at the beginning say.

Yeah, all security guards were party animals

Or Barney told him the day before. Or whispered it through the vent while gordon was dragged through the corridor.

I tend to overthink a lot of things in the game’s story, but to me it’s pretty obvious that Valve was probably just trying to make sure that the player (assuming the player has played HL1 prior to HL2) realized that Barney was a security guard at Black Mesa without Barney having to outright say that he was.

Well, he did say it. “it’s me, gordon, Barney! From Black Mesa!”

He didn’t say he was a guard.

this^

It’s me Gordon, Barney the dinosaur, from Black Mesa.

Who else would he be, if not the security guard?

It says so in Raising The Bar.

Maybe Gordon is an alcoholic and all the guards know it. After all, at the end of Half Life 3, Gordon DOES say, “Look, all I want is a beer.” :S

But, seriously, Barney and Gordon are friends. It’s possible that he offered Gordon a beer prior to the events of the game.

You are all fools for over thinking a game’s storyline. If it isn’t an in-your-face detail that lowers the quality of the storyline then you shouldn’t give a shit. Bscly stfu games aren’t prefect.

You just made me think of an awesome ending for Episode 3.

Barney and Gordon are sitting on a pier overlooking a beautiful Arctic or Xenian/Combine landscape at dusk. Barney reaches into an esky/snow and pulls out a beer and hands it to Gordon. Gordon goes “Fuk’n’ A” and they drink as the credits roll…

Would make me quite contempt and would give me a great sense of achievement.

Or like in the heineken commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1ZZreXEqSY
Barneys gift to Gordon is a closet full O’ beer

Because Barney is definetly quantum physicist material.

Nope, not a guard at all.

Let’s put it this way: With the “owing beer”, the “vent crawling” contests, and the “you dropped this [crowbar] back at Black Mesa” shows that Barney and Gordon knew each other prior to the Incident. And the developers of the Black Mesa mod said that the only guard that was the Barney was the guy banging on the door during the Inbound tram ride.

So, while he didn’t actually SAY he was a guard in Black Mesa, it’s easily deduced that he is. He also never talked about a family, but it’s easily deduced that he has one (at least two parents).

Most people have two parents, unless they were a test-tube baby.

And even then, they have two parents. Science fail.

By the way guys, you’re all taking “He didn’t say he was a guard” grossly out of context.

He did he was a guard

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
