Ask an Objectivist

Derp.

I object to your existence.

I object to your view of reality.

I reject your reality and substitute my own

Look around you, and tell me that reality is not objective. The evidence is all around you. You just have to use reason.

how can reality be objective :retard:

Because it exists independently of man’s mind. If a forest exists in a certain area, you can’t make it go away just by pretending it isn’t there. Other philosophies dictate that man’s mind is responsible for keeping reality in check (i.e. “How do you really know that bridge exists? You only think it does.”), or that mankind shares a sort of “collective conscienceness,” meaning that all men and women have the same goals, wants, and mindset–or at least should. This is known as collectivism, and is the base for altruism, socialism, fascism, and communism. I’m getting a bit off track here, so I’ll go back to the topic of reality at some point or another.

reality isn’t objective

we can perceive or imagine or discuss it objectively, but it is not objective itself

okay maybe i’m being pedantic

edit: okay maybe i’m just wrong about the definition of objectivity

Explain.

An example of reality being objective: If mankind were to suddenly go extinct, Earth would still exist.

Reality itself is just a bunch of signals that our body receives and our brain processes into feelings, senses, thoughts, visual information, etc.

You got the basic idea, yes. But it isn’t just signals. It’s also matter and substances.

How do you feel about Objectivism being usurped by Randianism?

Funny you should say that. Objectivism, when it first became known, was referred to as Randianism in honor of its creator, Ayn Rand (whom I believe was the greatest mind of the twentieth century), although she insisted that it be called Objectivism. Those who still call it Randianism clearly do not have the same mindset as Objectivists, even if they have the same intentions, becuase they do not even grant Ms. Rand the small favor of calling their philosophy Objectivism, as she wanted. I both pity them and shun them.

Objectivism is simply that the world exists separate from one’s own mind. That existed long before Rand ever existed. Randianism, in the meanwhile, is a sociopolitical doctrine about the role of government.

Most people today are objectivists

standard objectivism test:

if a tree falls and nobody is around, does it make a sound?

Is there anyone here who isn’t objectivist?

Yes.

No, Objectivism is Rand’s philosophy. See here:

Yes, it does.

Read on. It’s more than simple “Reality is exists beyond the mind.”

when I was a kid I would have answered no because the universe needs to save CPU cycles

I used to think IRL has draw distance and everything

it all has to do with that balloon that mysteriously disappeared from my room while I was there, I still never figured it out
