Ask an Objectivist

I think anyone that argues that the falling tree doesn’t make a sound would have to give their definition of “sound”.

To me, the definition of sound is the transmission of vibrations through matter (solid, liquid, gas). We hear sound when those vibrations hit our ear system and are turned into electrochemical responses in the brain.

yeah if I still thought the world was virtual I would have said sound = high bitrate wav file

I stopped believing it in 1999 after I saw the matrix

Yes, I know. However, that is one of the bases for the philosphy.

The true question is, if a tree falls and no one sees it, does anyone care?

yes, a room full of ninjas

the true question is: how do you define “one”

if you mean any living entity then the tree would probably never even fall because it wouldn’t decay

I have no idea what you’re trying to say; please elaborate more.

Now this is an interesting thread

Philosophy is very… philosophical, is it not?

Deep

That’s what she said.

If BM is released but no one is there to play it, does it still make a sound?

What I mean is, is BM objective or subjective.

Black Mesa is objective, and has been objective since the devs started to work on the actual mod using the Source SDK tool.

Surely it’d be:

“If BM is released, but no one is there to play it, is it really released?”

Because if there is no-one to release it TO, how can it be released?

Some one is there to release it though.

i would begin to exist for the sole purpose of playing it

How does an objectivist tackle the subject of rating movies, music, games, etc by their quality? How can an objectivist say that a certain movie is better than another since opinions are subjective?

continuity errors

That’s technical quality. But you could have a technically perfect movie with a bad plot, bad actors and bad directing or vice versa.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
