Well alot of people do care for politics, and I wasn’t away you are “totally ok” with murder and torture, but I think alot of things are coming together.
So you think all atheists just shout swear words at religion while screaming in a high pitched voice…you really haven’t met a nice atheist, have you?
I think I have established that you and dust are too full of your ideals (and, to a greater extent, yourselves) to come to terms with the fact that I know exactly what I’m talking about.
You don’t know exactly what your talking about because you have said that all atheists are arrogant and go around trashing religion all day. Tell that to every newborn baby, most scientists, a large amount of Americans, Britons, etc. You have to correct definition of an atheist, but by some miracle you still don’t know what the term means.
You are making generalizations of a large number of people. We are saying that you cannot do this. I know no atheists in real life that are actually like the atheists you describe. This is in itself proof negative of your assertion.
The thing is, Ram, is that we do think like the guy in the video says. However, he’s speaking one-on-many, not one-on-one. If you get this guy in a religious debate one-on-one with a religious person, you’ll see he’s just like us.
We generally don’t make videos, but if we did, that would be the video we’d make.
Unless we’re Edward Current…
Just remember it this way: Some atheists are anti-theists. Not all. I’m not anti-theistic but I will engage, heavily if necessary, in religious debates because I feel that religion sometimes is used by people with ulterior motives to advance agenda.
Burb: Yes. The only thing that binds us together is a collective unbelief in a deity.
It’s like those that don’t collect coins. I don’t collect them and I probably don’t have anything in common with someone else that doesn’t collect them except that we both don’t collect them.
You don’t hear the term “anumismatism” and there aren’t groups for anumismatists to join, however and there’s a gigantic reason for it: Coin collecting isn’t used as a political bludgeon/shield by coin collectors to pass laws and moral values judgements against those that don’t collect coins.
All of that implies there’s something definable that binds atheists together, besides the lack of belief in a deity.
There’s absolutely no grounds to make the statements you made. I’m sure there are lots of atheists that think completely differently from that guy, who are different from him, who’d make completely different videos.
Perhaps atheists that don’t give religion any thought at all. Atheists who actually like religion and what it has done and still does for humanity. Maybe there are atheists that go to church every Sunday, not because they have to, but because they like the social aspect, etc., of it.
I mean, there’s nothing about the definition of ‘atheist’ that precludes these things, and it’s silly to imply that there is.
The first step to eradicating this stigma on atheism is to stop referring to atheism as a group rather than as a characteristic.
I thought that the caveat at the end (with the reference to Mr. Current) was showing that I wasn’t speaking for the entire group nor that the group was a group at all. It was a half-joke. Sorry if I was a bit obtuse in my wording.
Atheism is strictly defined as the disbelief in deities, however the VAST majority of atheists believe in science over religion. Unfortunately, there is no word for “someone who believes in science over religion” so they are simply called atheists as that is the group they are a part of and the word that most closely describes them.
Atheist can be taken to mean two things. It can be the dictionary definition of someone who doesn’t believe in deities, or it can be the common definition of someone who turns to science over religion. Generally when I say atheist, and generally when ANYONE says atheist, we are talking about the latter; belief in science over religion.
@remerizoid Atheism by definition is not a cult as a cult is nothing but an extremist unorthodox religion and atheism is the lack of religion and usually the belief that science explains the world. How can it be a cult if it is the rejection of religion in favor of logic?
