And that’s what I’ve been countering with; possibilities don’t NEED evidence. Whether those possbilities become reality is another thing however.
Possibilities for anything are limitless, evidence just shows how ridiculous each one is.

baconeggs: THANK YOU! That’s the first thing I’ve read here that makes even a modicum of sense.
(If this was mentioned before, I didn’t see it and I do apologize.)
It’s basically been my argument from the start.
Sorry if I was dense. Happens sometime. I think I was stuck on the event or entity, not the possibility itself.
Like I said, I was focused on the entity/event itself, not the possibility thereof. I apologize. Let’s move on, shall we?
oh dear lord
Jesus christ, finally.
I’ll admit each is a non-zero probability, but you’re going too far stating it’s stupid to deny the existence of a god. It’s not stupid to say gravity won’t be failing any time soon.
We can’t live our lives assuming every possibility remains a candidate outcome. Sometimes we need to accept a 0.00000001% margin of error by excluding such stupidly unlikely scenarios.
… that’s what the point of the past few pages was.
That’s what I’ve been saying.
You can’t fully deny the possibility of something happening or existing. You CAN say the chances of it occuring or existing are so small you’d have to be mad to believe it.
That’s what started this argument, me saying that you’d have to be crazy to say that a god cannot possibly exist. A god could very well exist, but it’d be pretty surprising if one did since there’s no evidence that there is one.
:awesome:
Thank god I’m atheist. (I’ve actually said this on accident
You spelt god with a lowercase G, so it can mean anything you want. I consider myself a god, so whenever I thank the lord for something I’m really just giving myself a pat on the back.
O_O
Capital “G” for “God” (when not used as the first word in a sentence–that gets tricky) denotes a specific deity, like “Moon” denotes our planetary satellite whereas “moon” can mean any planetary satellite).
Since it would be “inappropriate” to post this in the “Christians thread”, and to me at least, still is definetly post-worthy, I will post it here instead of anywhere else:
I gather it might be well received here.
Tim Minchin is awesome, I must say.
Ok… I will ask - Well, not so much ask per say, as am interested to see the various takes of this line of thinking -
I realize that simply because one does not hold to belief in God, that does not mean that they automatically assume that there is nothing after we die -
Even so, if there is nothing after we die, then it is very hard to find any real meaning in anything. (And no I am not coming at this from a faith based perspective)
If there is any meaning to life, it is only for the time that we are alive. (At least, from our perspective, as we have the whole passing on our genes things)
If we accept that life on earth will end some day (Which it must if we follow the basic life cycle of the planet, and assuming we do not escape earth) then what the hell is the point of it?
What the hell is the point. Getting up and going to work is meaningless. Developing relationships are meaningless. Saving for the future. Etc. (I repeat - I am not injecting ANY dynamic of faith into this)
I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that there can be no reasonable answer as to the “why” of life (In a bigger sense of the word) as it relates to (Knowable - in a certainty sense) purpose.
Why is there anything? ETC.
It just seems lame ot go through the shit we do, only to realize that both those with a happy life, and those who face challenges, meet the same end. If Happy or sad, it is meaningless in the big picture.
Sure, one can say that we can enjoy the discovery or nature and such - but… Ummm it is meaningless. Killing a million Zombies (though always fun) in Video games means nothing.
Being a dick or a (pardon the term - ) Saint, means nothing.
I sometimes smile at the whole Greek thing of “Eat, Drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die”
Even so… it is meaningless.
We are trapped on this spinning rock, and there is sweet F_Ck all we can do about it in the long haul. There is nothing wrong with taking one for the team, but what the hell game is being played?
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
