Ask an Atheist!!!

Thank God!

Oh, wait… :3

I don’t think it is bad as much as it is sad. I don’t get angry at people because they write something about God in money, or because they hang crosses on walls or recite Holy Fathers. If they want to do something for a few minutes and want me to do it with them, all right, I don’t mind. Just please don’t drag me to a Church for more than one hour for no reason at all.

However, it seems very sad to me how people are so obsessed about rituals. Specially because Jesus used to criticize this behavior many times.

Actually, Guga, it’s not people writing “God” on the currency, it’s the printing office itself. “God” is printed on the money. All of it.

Check out the back of the $1 bill, for example:

I know, that is what I meant.

By the way, one proof of people’s obsession is that, whenever you complain about anything like “I don’t wanna pray with you” or “get God out of my money”, they get all defensive and angry as if we were trying to get their beliefs away or something. I just let it be.

EDIT: God is also in Brazilian’s bills, but it is littler than in dollars, and it’s written “God be praised”.

I guess I’m a bit more militant than you are. In the United States, we have a Constitution that states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”.

To me, “God” on the money violates this portion of the Constitution and the Constitution should either be amended or “God” should be removed. That would mean turning our motto back to “E Pluribus Unum”.

I have nothing against the national motto on the money, but the national motto was changed, via an act of Congress, to “In God We Trust” and I think that act was completely unconstitutional.

Your thoughts?

I agree with you that it is bad. A lot of people would get mad if the bill said “In Obama we trust”, it would look like political manipulation to control the people. They would also get angry if it mentioned “Allah” or “Great Forest Spirit” instead of God.

I think it is very clear that it is not the real problem, it’s just part of it. The big picture is illustrated in this funny video.

However, I do not think the best way to fight the problem is to use law to force people to stop. I mean, if law impeached schools from praying during class and removed God from dollars, they would get angry and rebel against the State. The police would have to enforce the law somehow, and that would take resources that would be better spent on something else, and also increase people’s rage against atheists.

I know preventing minorities to be oppressed is one of the purposes of the law, but I can hardly see this as oppression. It doesn’t hurt anyone, it just annoys.

It is critical that atheist “behave” and don’t try fighting these minor issues. I say that, if you are being oppressed by your boss or workmates for being an atheist, then use the law. Only use the law when you are explicitly injured. It is critical that we give them a good impression, otherwise they will blame atheism and the prejudice against atheists will increase.

We have to fight against culture. Our only weapon in this case is freedom of speech, so we use it to make people think and change their minds, slowly. Bother people into thinking, reflecting. Don’t force shit into their minds for that is exactly what religions do to them, just let them think and make conclusions on their own.

Unrelated funny fact: in court, witnesses make an oath to tell the truth in the name of God, which means that, if they might go to hell for not saying the truth. Nevertheless, they lie. Now, when the attorney says the witness should say the truth otherwise it might go to prison, they start to tell the truth.

See, I don’t want to tell people that they can’t pray. I just don’t want the government doing it. “God” on money, “God” in the Pledge, and so on is government sponsorship of a single religion (from what I read, some Jews don’t like to write the word “God”). When “God” was placed in these venues, it is invariably Christians doing it. If you read the history, Christians are the one religion that is trying to insert itself into the government.

Replace “God” with “Allah” and I think you’d hear a lot more outcry than you’re currently hearing now, yet I think it’s exactly the same to me.

Also, “behave”? “Good impression”? Dude, we’re already Satan-worshipers and Nazi brownshirts…

Funny vid, though.

Unfortunately, they can’t see the difference between “There shouldn’t be a public prayer in school before class” and “You can’t pray in school”.

Islam is inserted in some countries as well. And yes, both cases are bad.

That was my point.

Exactly. We need to show that we are not like that, or the prejudice will continue. It is the same with racial discrimination.

Yup, its creator is a fucking genius. I’m watching a lot of his videos lately.

Sorry, but constantly being told I’m a Satan-worshiping Nazi fascist socialist god-hating America-hating asshole faggot with no morals…I get a little testy.

What can I say, I have a lot of patience

gee, i sure am glad i dont live in the land of the free

Excuse-me, what do you mean by “land of the free” and why are you glad for not living there?

(Do you mean the fact that Belgium is a secular country?)

“Land of the Free” is a nickname for the United States and is sometimes used sardonically.

I was referring to all the shit atheists apparently get in the US.

Just going to note there is no actual evidence he said that, save one opinionated man.

i just think it’s funny how ppl always attribute that quote to babby bush even tho it was hw

You are correct that it hasn’t been confirmed that he said it, but GHWB did confirm that he DOES think that.

It was confirmed in an interview with the Washington Post.
I can post a link if you really want me to.

Go ahead. I’m just suspicious of all quotes on either side that are extreme, and I could find little evidence for its validity.
